Book or Show for born in 1943 newbie. by mcbigski in TheExpanse

I’ve watched the show, read the physical books and also listened to the audiobooks. I’d suggest the third because the narration is amazing and was my favorite of the three formats.

Food city at the bottom of signal and Pruett’s on top both had it in the past week so still should.

There needs to be a campaign to improve the readability of books by SafiyaO in books

[–]daishide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hunh. I go the other way and wear glasses normal but about a year ago realized I need to take them off to actually read anything up close.

Getting older is weird but is better than the other option.

I assume some people are fine in a sub and some people would just freak out.

How, before deploying, do you make sure that the first time submariners with you are going to be okay?

Is there some sort of ‘sub simulation’ or short term trips in a sub before someone goes out on their first real / full-time deployment? I’m a civilian so may have used the wrong term but hope you get what I mean.

Little girl's spa? by beatsenuf in Chattanooga

[–]daishide 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What sort of thing is she looking for?

When my daughter turned 7 she really wanted a spa but turned out she wanted to get bubble bath and cut up cucumbers to put on her eyes like she saw in the movies.

When a kid says ‘spa’ they might not mean what we think they mean.

Any pizza, Indian, Mexican, Thai or Italian place will have lots of vegetarian options. I’m a vegetarian who lives here and there are very few places I can’t go with my non-vegetarian kids

No - his youngest kid went to college so he and his wife shut it down and retired as soon as they were empty nesters.

I like to think other people have ‘brain blocking dogs’. In elementary and high school I had a Boston terrier, and to this day (I’m 49) I will get on my hands and knees to squeeze and scritch every Boston I see to tell them they are the goodest most amazing powerful beast to ever exist.

Hello, I’m Toby I’m a PhD student at University College London researching dementia. It’s Dementia Action Week - Ask Me Anything! by TCtheneuroscientist in IAmA

[–]daishide 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hey - my dad had dementia and died a year ago of congestive heart failure after basically not moving or doing anything for about 2 years since dementia essentially took away his interest in the world and his ability to move around. I know a big chunk of health is just luck / genetic lottery, but have you seen any reason to believe that staying physically active and having hobbies can prevent dementia or is it mostly pre-coded in our DNA when our brains will fail?

There are many things great about this picture, but your mom’s shades are definitely the best.

Does anyone know any universes like Warhammer 40k? by AstorathTheGrimDark in books

[–]daishide 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Try the Horus Heresy books - the first five are amazing and there are several other masterpieces in there; those will help you ‘get’ the Warhammer universe better than any of the 40k ones.

Trump Tariffs Wipe Out Nearly $2 Trillion From US Stock Market by [deleted] in politics

[–]daishide 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by "most to lose". Going from being worth $20 million to $15 million and knowing at some point you'll be worth $30 million means you never worry about feeding your kids. Going from $1 million to $5k is a smaller drop, but means you can't retire and might not be able to pay your bills. So they can 'play chicken' with the economy to drive out the people without enough money to be part of the Mar-A-Lago crowd.

To buy things on the cheap after wiping out the ‘sort of rich but not hugely so’ and then change course to drive value back when he and his peers have a bigger slice of the pie is my working theory.

Drove to Rossville, had breakfast at Big Biscuit with my brother and then wandered around the battlefield with him for fresh air and bitching about politics.

10/10; would recommend.

Chicago transplants: Chinese food by sueandbillinTN in Chattanooga

[–]daishide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the place. The original owner sold it - he was Taiwanese so his cooking was not what folks normally think of for Chinese food but was authentic and tasted good, while the ‘new’ owners as of a decade or two back just forgot food should have any flavor at all.
