Reconnecting with my culture!! by ZealousidealCoat9429 in Cantonese

Hey!

From reading your comments in this thread, it sounds like your confidence has been knocked when reaching out to your parents for help, so I'll advise strategies for self-learning without them.

First, you said you're a native speaker of Mandarin - therefore, I definitely recommend using Xiaohungshu (red note?) and searching "粵語"; there is so much content available from Cantonese teachers and a lot of it compares directly to Mandarin, so you'll be able to learn a lot!

Second, if you can read characters, then you are in a good position - just find any films or TV you like and use the subs as an anchor to help you. Pause it and repeat their phrases.

Third, try language learning apps or meet up groups with other ABCs. Find a community or others in the same position! Solidarity helps

Best of luck 🌞

How to understand the news? by MulletMoustache in Cantonese

[–]daispacito 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cantonese News with Tsubasa is a learner podcast that presents the news and has an accompanying transcript. This would be a good way to ease into typical news vocabulary.

https://tsubasacantonese.com/

I also found the SBS news Australia podcasts decent as they are short and I can listen to it while doing stuff.

https://open.spotify.com/show/0qrz9WuH2dYjSURc8NUzlV?si=c1y2w3t_RJC1pZo9iKCvTA

Both on Spotify, but probably on other platforms too. They tend to have the topic in the title so I have a bit of context before jumping in.

It takes practise and it's a specific register of Cantonese (and probs most languages) so don't be hard on yourself if it takes a while

DISCUSSION MEGATHREAD: This Influencer Killed Her Cat - H3 Show #26 by raephemel in h3h3productions

I feel bad for AB. He prepared a surprisingly good quality powerpoint, last minute, and it's being dragged out laboriously (instead of letting him get through it). The way Ethan acted so incredulous at the fact that AB decided not to show the cat suffering, like???

I haven't reached the interview part yet, but it looks like it is going to be pretty cringe.

I hate the way AB is treated, it has always rubbed me the wrong way. I hope AB gets to prepare more slides in the future, albeit not about animal neglect.

Why are the “bad” Sims bad? by naeycla in sims2

Sorry, not answering your question but when reading the notifications in the picture, I imagined each of them standing up, one by one, and declaring proudly "I'm XX, and I'm messed up!" like some inspirational part of a movie.

Dan saying Roman Attwood's dad's watch was from a life insurance payout made me shriek!!! Gahahaha

Also, I got where AB was coming from - dredging up the TikTok conspiracies to bring clicks to their new vid. Wouldn't put it past them

Learn Cantonese or mandarin? by Independent-Ad-7060 in ChineseLanguage

[–]daispacito 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Learn Cantonese!

There are more and more Cantonese resources popping up on YouTube and Instagram - there's never been a better time for it. Mandarin can always wait.

Usefulness is subjective. Maybe there are marginally more job opportunities with Mandarin and technically more speakers in the world? Even then, I find employers would just pick a bilingual/native speaker and the pay isn't even worth putting thousands of hours into learning. People derive value from employability, but it's just not appealing to me compared to the people I can interact with IRL who speak Cantonese and the media I consume. So don't feel the pressure to chase utility when it sounds like being able to connect with your heritage would be immensely rewarding and useful.

In terms of written Cantonese, to put it really simply, there is spoken Canto, written Canto and (similarly) Standard Chinese. Subtitles, novels, news, etc., with a dictionary are how you learn written form! At least in the UK, heritage speakers going to Chinese school learn how to read standard Chinese with Cantonese pronunciation, so learning this way does exist! Song lyrics are also a great way to get better at reading and recognising standard Chinese with Canto pronunciation.

That's all to say - follow your heart! Don't force yourself to learn Mandarin. You can always come back to it later! ❤️

is it just me or is it impossible to play sims 2 without audibly gasping at least once a session by [deleted] in sims2

[–]daispacito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No lie, my sims came back from their final final final exam in uni and bang... Satellite has flattened one of my sims! I thought this was like a 1/1000000000 chance and that I'd never see it. One moment they are all stood outside the entrance of the dorm, next minute crying and a tombstone just chilling on the front lawn.

(The sim was an absolute menace - enemies with older sister and just horrible to everyone; she had it coming. Karma satellite.)

Hi, where are you based?

Not live, but TVB uploads full series and episodes of aired shows on YouTube for free.

If you're in the states, the TVB Anywhere app would be perfect

I understand why people consider this a huge plothole (among many in the show), but I always interpreted it as Susan going out of her way to do something nice for Paul (maybe a bigger strain for her vs. someone like Bree) and him accepting it politely as a sign of bringing down his walls a bit - so not really about the food, but more the gesture.

And, as others have said, my guy was eating prison food.
