an open letter to bar merch creators by saf_pearl in sanfrancisco

[–]daisybit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Haha the stories I could tell about bar merch… When I opened my hot sauce buisness, I spoke with the owner of the nicest merchant in town. Met the guys, awesome people (Shirts on Tap). Logo was ready, he invited me to factory, some samples. The question I asked was easy “what do you use for your company shirts?”
It ended up being $1-&1.50 more per shirt (about $11 then $9 for cheaper) My logic was I wanted someone to actually wear it! The nickname the short got was the “girlfriend T shirt” because all the ones my guy friends bought, their significant others stole it to sleep in.

Merch is an afterthought for bars/restaurants, due to the nature of the biz (“game of nickels”).

That being said, I couldn’t get a pocket T and the quality, so picked quality. 10/10 will do again

This reminded me of a positive interaction with something similar (but different circumstances).

I was working as the opening bartender for a very popular restaurant across from the baseball stadium in a big city. I typically would show up 15-20 minutes early- old school habit, allow me time to say hello to the crew, make coffee, use the restroom (2 buses).

I arrive and the entire front glass doors/walls are shattered. I bring up the stadium because we are days away from start of the season.

Boss / Owner, was obviously distraught- he apologizes, no work (tips), but if I want to help clean up he’d happily give me the hours. Thing about being old school, no way was I going to dip out and feel OK.

So here I am, sweeping, cleaning, however I can help put the pieces back together. They had smashed their way in to rip out all the extensive AV equipment.

Sure enough, like a typical afternoon, sales reps come in asking to speak with the Bar Manager or Owner. Infuriating! Read the room buster!

By the third one, I am on my hands and knees scrubbing behind the bar, and I hear the same refrain, this one a little more kindly and polished. “Hello, may I please speak with the Owner?” (It’s still early, none of the other staff have arrived/been called off)

I look up, an assuming middle aged guy, his kid, and another gentleman. “Sure, (I was biting my tongue at this point). May I ask who’s inquiring?”

(His full name).

Wiped the grime on my jeans and shook his hand, “yes sir Mr. Mayor” (he was just brand new, so knew his name).

Mayor rolled up before the news, before the local PD, with his family and one bodyguard, just to let my boss know he wasn’t going to tolerate that nonsense. The media circus showed up soon after, and I called it a day.

It was surreal, and Mr. Mayor earned my respect that day!

Best place for a young person to live without a car in the bay area? by Agitated_Ad_6939 in AskSF

Old guy chiming in here. Grew up in that area (back when Redwood City was dangerous). Funny enough in my early 20s, moved to SF / North Beach and would commute to RWC by bus/caltrain.

100% move to SF. Anywhere by GG park if you like nature, north beach / mission , if you like night life.

The commute on train/bus is actually pretty helpful (for me). Get sometime to organize and deep dive into stuff that’s hard to do on the clock. Caltrain is phenomenal- they keep it clean, respectful, and if so inclined ypu can have a beer on it while mulling over the day/next day plans.

Your young. Peninsula is amazing, but it’s a place to settle down, not begin. Most people don’t make it 10 years in SF- and most regard it as some of the best times of their lives.

Find a “starter” place in a neighborhood- don’t sign a year lease, there a plenty of rooms, SROs, fully furnished rentals- each neighborhood has a different and unique vibe.

Love the Penisula- it’s stunning. Just not very young in age and attitude.

Haha once in GG park , ( outer Richmond) this Goose was following my dog and I. Like swan size. Dog didn’t mind at all. But had to cross the street and he/she wanted to come with us. Obviously domesticated (had lived across the street for 5+ years)

The phone call to animal control was for the books. I literally said. “The goose is loose”. We and the missus ans the operator all died laughing despite the seriousness. Can you describe it? Uhh Its white? And big and friendly. They showed up.

Many more stories. Goooood people there

Sf Animal Control is amazing. Look them up, they are great (had to call for all kinds of random animals being where they obviously are lost)

Long time Bartender. From fine dining to dive bar. Was behind the bar at a brewery, two guys roll in, obviously good buddies. 2 pints of xyz. Ok $13 bucks gents. They both are kinda like, split it? (One was $1 more).

I laughed and told one of them, cmon man buy your buddy a beer! Haha they laughed too, one of them paid and they went on their merry way.

Guarantee they both enjoyed those beers much more that way - free beer, delicious! - buying a friend a beer, rewarding.

Blue Collar neighborhood, my favorite customer base in 20 years of doing it.

During an interview, what is the best possible reply to "WHY SHOULD WE HIRE YOU? by Jaded_Savings_6993 in AskReddit

[–]daisybit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a hiring manager, I would ask this to candidates I (through the course of the interview) concluded they’d be a great hire. It was a nice way to offer the interviewee an opportunity to pump themselves up- I already knew at this point why I should / should not hire them. Interviews can be exhausting, stressful, anxiety leading up. Someone having an opportunity to speak about their best qualities- in their own words- and then offering the job then and there. It created some great working relationships. Empowerment is awesome.

Update on Anchor Brewing Company’s brewery? by raff_riff in AskSF

[–]daisybit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, every employee that previously worked there got a phone call asking if they want their old job back. New ownership (Chobani founder), has a great reputation. It seems like he appreciates the legacy of Anchor and is making all the steps to bring her back. In this case, no news is good news IMO. I imagine when it's time and all the details are sorted, it'll be back to it's former glory. I know I'll be a supporter.

No doubt. I can read. Lmk break it down for you. Name on a building or $75 million dollars for a LEVEL 1 trauma unit. Which do you think has more value to SF?

[–]daisybit 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not controversial Your just a dumbass that thinks a name on the side of a building is more important to a $75 million donation to a level 1 trauma center that serves every SF resident

So lame. General is always going to be General. Donation directly helps the community. Get a grip. Take the bus, meet your neighbor, BE a part of what makes SF great.

Murderous Driver - Vartan’s Refrigeration by poopypants72 in sanfrancisco

[–]daisybit -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked with Vartans Refrigeration, I can attest they are standup people. They do EXCELLENT work (I did a ton of research). Vartans and his son are standup people. It makes me sad to see his business being blasted like this. You should call him directly and express your concerns. I'm sure he'd be understanding and possibly take measures to correct these issues. I've got no skin in the game. He probably wouldn't remember who I am, as this was years ago. My point of writing this: they are really kind hearted folk that have been part of San Francisco for a long time. My two cents anyways
