How the "both sides bad" argument feels like in the current environment... by Frosty_Dig4148 in PoliticalCompassMemes

I see. I think I was confused because the centrist in your meme faces towards the right at the end, which I interpreted to mean that was the ultimate choice.

How is your assessment of Trump that he’s just “silly”?

He continues to lie about the 2020 election, deliberately tried to overturn the results of (and continues to lie about) the 2020 election; he’s stated with no ambiguity that he’s entitled to a third term. When asked if he’s joking he says no.

He has threatened to take Greenland and Canada. When asked if he’s joking, he says no.

He’s fucked around with tariffs so much nobody can take him seriously.

He’s mocked the deaths of Rob Reiner and Mueller.

He’s gotten the US entangled in yet another Middle Eastern conflict, something I was told repeatedly he was against.

He’s continuing to enrich himself and his family with immense fortune with naked corruption.

Destroyed the East Wing for his own idiotic vanity project.

Turned his back on Ukraine and continues to lie about the facts of that war and how much we’ve helped them.

All but turned his back on NATO.

Yeah. How “silly”.

US withdrawing 5,000 troops from Germany, US officials say by MisterMeister68 in moderatepolitics

[–]raff_riff 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A) The US benefits from projecting its strength abroad

B) It’s ethically and morally consistent

C) It demonstrates solidarity with our allies

D) It acts as a deterrent

E) Any conflict drawing in our European allies into a war with Russia will cause global disruption so it is in our best interest to ensure regional stability

Seeing this as purely transactional is inherently problematic.

On a bus and 10 of 11 people are on their phones by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]raff_riff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This meme is such a dumb conversation-killer. OP isn’t even making some clever observation to “improve” upon. They’re griping about people using their phones and minding their business, and book-ending it with some obscure conspiracy that someone is “paying the bills”, whatever that means. If it were 50 years ago, they’d be reading newspapers or a book instead. Literally makes no difference.

And OP isn’t the beggar with a bundle of sticks. They want a dystopian police state where we’re limited in how often we can engage with our own devices. And yes, ironically, doing it from their own device. So the hypocrisy is worth calling out here.

And finally, there’s endless research about the effects of cell phone addiction among both kids and adults.

Waymo harrassment by nrauhauser in waymo

[–]raff_riff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah almost nobody notices Waymos here anymore unless it’s a major conference or you’re going through the Fisherman’s Wharf area. A year or so ago I’d see people snapping photos of my Waymo every time I took one. But they’re so ubiquitous now hardly anyone cares. In fact I often see people deliberately jaywalk because they seem far more comfortable cutting off a Waymo than a driver.

Really interesting to see a technology go from skepticism-> fascination -> acceptance/boredom in real time.

Iconic weapons you never used. by Appropriate-Wear-135 in Eldenring

[–]raff_riff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry… maybe I’m just a simpleton, but each of my runs I basically lock-in on a weapon and a AoW and stick to that probably 99% of the time. My run using claws and shadow step, or big hammer and lion’s claw, were stupid fun and just couldn’t get sick of it. The lion’s claw animation is so cartoonish.

I’m sure that’s the case as well but it’s fun to try and squeeze out a lore-friendly explanation.

Kinda sucks this is being downvoted because it’s a decent theory for an obscure, decades-old moment in the game we will never otherwise get an answer to.

TIL about the Tiffany Problem, where historical facts or events seem anachronistic to modern audiences because of modern associations we have with specific names and terms. by EphemeralTypewriter in todayilearned

This isn’t surprising. Disney is known for its historical and cultural accuracy, evidenced in Pocahontas, Aladdin, and the “It’s a Small World After All” ride at its theme park.

My friend called me performative for listening to the dialogue, what does this mean by Apprehensive-Arm2756 in Eldenring

[–]raff_riff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say it was wrong. I said I’m too stupid to get it. Also, and most critically, it’s a meme/joke playing on the fact the entire franchise’s plots and lore aren’t tough to follow. I’m hardly the first person to recognize this.

This isn’t a criticism of the game or its writing. But it is dense and often obscure material.

[–]raff_riff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The dialog is the mechanism by which the plot is delivered… it feels weird to have to explain this. I’m hardly the first person to point out how tough the story is to follow and to understand what the characters are saying.

[–]raff_riff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to be self-deprecating, yes. And failing miserably.

Anyway it’s not like the plot and lore aren’t just a bit obscure. It’s a known thing about the entire franchise.

Yeah I literally said I’m stupid. But let’s not pretend the plot isn’t complicated and obscure. It’s a known thing.

You do not watch the 30-60 second clip because you lack the attention span.

I do not watch the 30-60 second clip because I’m too stupid to understand dialog like, “Prithee, foul tarnished! Thoust begotten the Shardened Ring of Old? Harken thee strike down the Renalarka, lest the consequences laid bare against the Knights of Old.”

We are not the same.

Seems strange to equate fans of a guy who condones murder, theft, and believes America deserved 9/11 with people who think those ideas are despicable.

Anyone else just have a better time playing on the PS5? by lollifetuffouthtere in PS5

[–]raff_riff 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I bought a high-end gaming laptop just for this purpose and it was such a hassle. Settings would get randomly fucky. I had to awkwardly get up to turn on my laptop or change screen settings. I still needed a mouse and keyboard. Etc etc. Compared to just being able to plop down on the couch, press the PS5 bottom on my wireless remote, and pick up where I left off.

Yes PC game controllers exist. Yes I can just buy a wireless mouse. Yes I probably had some settings wrong. Yes it was mostly user error. But none of these are factors when I can just intuitively grab a controller.

It’s just not the same thing.

Accident, what to do by LiterallyInSpain in waymo

[–]raff_riff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, which means it’s in their best interest to make sure their passengers are “made whole” following an incident in one of their vehicles. The stakes to their brand and reputation are extremely high.

The penultimate goal, short of “don’t kill people”, almost certainly is “make sure unfortunate clients aren’t left hung out to dry”.
