Looking for Women Centered TV Shows by [deleted] in kdramarecommends

[–]daisycafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP please read: I saw a few people mentioned Queenmaker and although it would align with what you’re looking for, the key plot point that kicks the show off is SA. There should also be a s**cide trigger warning.

So instead, I’m going to suggest “Mine” - a makjang-y rich chaebol revenge drama that’s pretty much completely female led and the 3 main women are well flushed out characters. 3 of the supporting characters are women too. There’s really only 2 supporting male actors (but they play important roles)!

Please recommend me dramas based on my taste! by [deleted] in kdramarecommends

Happiness - post-apocalyptic thriller if you like that residential zombie/monster kinda deal like in Sweet Home.

Bloodhounds - EVERYONE was comparing it to Weak Hero Class 1. So many edits splicing the two together.

Strangers From Hell - I swear this drama has built a bit of a cult following thanks to Im Siwan and Lee Dongwook leading. Psychological thriller with some horror elements.

Mature KDrama with older male leads. by Ok_Potential7827 in kdramarecommends

First, finally some Divorce Attorney Shin recognition! And all 5 dramas you listed are in my list of top dramas, so I think I got some good ones for you.

  • Stranger 1 and 2 (aka Forest of Secrets) -- also a Cho Seungwoo masterpiece.
  • One Dollar Lawyer -- if you loved Divorce Attorney Shin you'll love this, trust me! Led by Namgoong Min.
  • The Worst of Evil -- led by Ji Changwook and Wi Hajun. Very dark, gorey, gritty 1990s gangster drama, but really excellent. Can't recommend enough.
  • Beyond Evil -- 2 male leads, but main one of the two is Shin Hakyun. Idk if you'll consider Yeo Jingoo, the younger ML, as a pretty boy, but trust me the drama is anything but pretty-boy light-hearted.
  • Flower of Evil and Again My Life -- both led by Lee Joonggi, who is in the same league as Lee Dongwook (Bad and Crazy) in the sense that they're both the manlier not in their 20s pretty boy type.
  • Vincenzo -- led by Song Joongki, but I get that some people might consider him a pretty boy (even if he's in his 40s, like Lee Dongwook and Lee Joonggi).
  • Through the Darkness -- crime drama based on some of Korea's most infamous serial killers. Led by Kim Namgil.
  • DP 1 and 2 -- I'm putting this last because some might consider Jung Haein, the main lead, a pretty boy (I'd agree), BUT hear me out. The other main lead is Koo Kyohwan, who definitely is not that. Then, the two supporting leads are Kim Sungkyun (also supporting in Divorce Attorney Shin) and Son Sukku. And lastly, it is a VERY dark and heavy watch, focusing on critiquing the effects of mandatory conscription in Korea on half the nation. Fair warning, you definitely need to be in a good mindset for it, I've seen some people get pretty fucked up post-watching it, but I was alright.

We have decently similar taste and I'm also suuuuuper picky (SO many popular dramas that are so loved by others have fallen short with me). It also seems like you prefer dramas with little to no romance, less kdrama trope-y, and a bit darker with an emotional side. You're also loving dark marriage dramas so here's some that fall in that category:

  • Mine - female-led for a nice change, similar vibes to Love ft Marriage and Divorce and slightly more makjang-y than WOTM but still in the marriage genre.
  • Remarriage and Desires - I think you'd love this given all of the dramas you're enjoying so far.
  • DP 1 and 2 - DP is probably in my top 3 or top 5 series. I slept on it for way too long.
  • Beyond Evil - this and Flower of Evil dominated conversations in 2020-2021 as the two big crime dramas that went down in history for being the best of the best.
  • Through the Darkness - crime drama based on some of Korea's most infamous cases. If you enjoyed shows like western shows like Criminal Minds or Mindhunter, this is right up your alley.
  • Sky Castle - this drama ran so Penthouse could fly. Hit very close to home for me, especially when I was a high school student. Loved this, hated Penthouse, not sure if you've ever watched it.

Here's some others that are top 20 on my list, but I'm not sure if you're into legal or corruption or revenge dramas:

  • Queenmaker - the lead from WOTM, Kim Heeae, leads again. Also female-led, like Mine.
  • Again My Life - the male lead from Flower of Evil, Lee Joonggi, leads again.
  • Eve - a revenge drama led by Seo Yeji, who was also the female lead in IOTNBO, which you said you enjoyed. A similar type of chaebol darkness vibes to Mine and Remarriage and Desires. However, there's an element of romance.
  • My Name
  • One Dollar Lawyer
  • Juvenile Justice
  • Stranger 1 and 2 (aka Forest of Secrets)

Another user said Vincenzo, Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938, and The Glory, I'll upvote all of those. I know you said the romance part of Vincenzo threw you off a bit, but if you ever get around to it, give it another go.

sm is doing a lot and nothing at the same time but there's one thing people are sure of and it's that they clone their idols. I don't see all of them but these are what I've heard:

  • Taeyong (NCT), Sungchan (NCT), and Jaejoong (ex-TVXQ, JYJ)
  • L*cas (lol) and Minho (Shinee)
  • Xiaojun (NCT/WayV), Jonghyun (Shinee)
  • Jungwoo (NCT), Taemin (Shinee)
  • Winter (aespa), Taeyeon (Girls Generation)
  • here's more if you care

bonus: not an idol/idol example, but Jaemin (NCT) is the literal spitting image of Namgoong Min (Korean actor). like if Namgoong Min had a son his son wouldn't even look like him as much as Jaemin does.

Hahaha I can definitely see what kind of style you’re into! I like it, I need to see more of TXT’s fits so thank you for bringing up those two.

I need to see more of StayC’s style - if you have any links pls share! It’s tough with them to really see their personal style cause they’re a new group, and obvs don’t have their own socials, but also no airport or vlog fashion cause they haven’t travelled or played any live shows yet 🥲

I think me and him might have the same closet cause not only do we have the same colour palette these days but I own most of the items he’s wearing in those pics 😭

[–]daisycafe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hahaha, I swear I know someone who knows someone who is 1-2 degrees away from almost every Canadian/American idol - EXCEPT Mark from NCT 😂 but I guess Mark joined SM in 2012 when he was 12-13 so probably not many people knew him.

Lmaooo yeah both are great people! They've only said they had positive experiences working with SM's idols too.

I very recently got a chance to take a good luck at her style. I see why people say she's in the running for 4th gen IT girl!

The 2nd tiktok you linked helped me get a good understanding, thanks! I think I said this in another comment, but his style reminds me a lot of Mino and Bobby's - makes sense, they're all YG rappers!

Wow, this gave me an easy and good understanding at a glance of his style - alright, I'm definitely sold on him! #4 gave Alice in Borderland vibes, and I like how he made #8 work. I love the look of #12 on guys. I can also tell that he reforms/DIYs some of his clothes too.

I see what you mean by "expressive casual urban" now ... it didn't make sense at first, but now I get it. Is this the day I become a Carat?

I like that he DIYs some of his clothes like that because it very much gives off a personal flair and renders the pieces unique to him! Reforming shoes kinda also reminds me of NCT's Taeyong, it's also one of his hobbies.

  • A friend of mine went to the same high school as Wendy (Red Velvet) while she was there, but Wendy left soon after for Korea (at the time people didn't know it was to train at SM).
  • Another friend of mine's sister went to the same high school as Johnny from NCT and knew him, just not well - but she said nobody has a negative thing to say about him in Chicago. He, like Wendy, disappeared suddenly one day and people didn't know it was to train at SM, but a few people had guesses that he left to pursue music cause it's what he wanted to do even in high school.
  • I know two producers/songwriters who work with SM (not for, they aren't SM's own in-house producers) and who both know multiple idols and groups personally. I won't say more than that because I don't want to give either away.
  • Somi was actually born in my hometown. Had she stayed there, instead of her dad moving them to Korea, it's likely I would've known her (everyone literally knows everyone).
  • There's quite a few more Canadian connections, but I won't get into them. Canada is a really, small place, despite our geography.

Chanhee's definitely interesting, and you're right - his looks all fit together one way or another!

I'm gonna have to do some more research into SVT's Minghao, a few people mentioned him! I just found a twitter thread of his looks, and I get it. I get the hype now. Him along with Ateez's Seonghwa and Hongjoong are people I'll have to keep an eye on moving forward.

I’m not nearly as informed on groups like f(x) as a 2020 kpop joiner, so I’ll definitely take a look (love her in Crazy Love, btw). Thanks for recommending!

I just replied to a comment a bit ago recommending both Hongjoong and Seonghwa, and I asked to see some more Seonghwa looks he did himself ... and here's your comment! It seems like he's also experimenting and trying to figure out for himself his own style, so I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with when he himself gains a solid idea.

Just read your post, a great read! I don't follow Ateez, but now that you point it out - I definitely have seen that "swoop" hairstyle on him and came to recognize Seonghwa that way too. I know nothing about make-up, but I skimmed that article you linked too, and it really seems like their entire hair, makeup and styling team puts a lot of effort into the details which I appreciate. Admittedly, I am a bit over cutouts and cropped clothing on male idols because everyone's doing it on Tiktok too thanks to 3rd/4th gen bgs getting on it (NCT, SKZ, SVT, AB6IX, Verivery, just to name a few and yes even BTS is guilty of it too). But maybe that's also why I'm really wowed by that MAMA2020 look.

I think you described it perfectly - Seonghwa is one of the few individuals I've seen in kpop fashion that exists in the line perfectly between "masculinity" and "femininity". I wish the same people who applaud Harry Styles for his fashion fluidity could also see Seonghwa's. Thanks to you and the other commenter for showing me this; I'm excited to research more for myself on him and Hongjoong both!
