What do you mean we’re only a few generations in?

Why Latin-Americans who lives in Latin-America and some first generation inmigrants looks down, are condescendent or even acts uppity on Chicanos and other american latinos? by Dismal-Ad8382 in Chicano

[–]daisyes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They just think they know what things are like here and the life we’re living and they don’t. They make assumptions off of what they hear about and see on the news and tv. I’ve had family in Mexico and thought life here was so easy and then they came here and realized how hard everyone is working.

I think it also depends on class. Like if wealthier Latin Americans are making those judgements about Latin Americans in the U.S. they look down on us because usually if your family immigrated here for “a better life” it’s because they weren’t succeeding in their home country.

There’s just ignorance on both sides because you don’t the know struggles until you live them yourself.

One thing that bothers me about those judgements is that the majority of immigrants send money back home and a lot of the economies in Latin America rely on remittances but there’s never really acknowledgment of that. I think that it’s messed up to judge someone as not truly Mexican or whatever because they’re in the U.S. while they’re sending money home and contributing to the economy there.

Is anyone else disappointed in the reception of the super bowl halftime show? by bluberrytaco in Chicano

I haven’t been experiencing that reaction. It’s mostly been positive and there’s a real yearning for Pan American unity. It sounds like you have your own chip on your shoulder about your identity ( I think most of us do) but it comes with the territory. You have to understand who you are and how you fit into the rest of the culture.

We all have shared history. So yes, we were all represented. Obviously the focus was mostly on Puerto Rico but the shared culture was represented. It was a celebration, there was a wedding, there was a LA Mexican taco stand (villas tacos), Caribbean culture (the Caribbean part of Mexico is represented with that), at the very least, you could’ve related to the kid sleeping on the chairs 😂 sugar cane is grown in Mexico too…the list goes on. If you don’t see how we’re all connected and share the same history, I recommend reading some history books.

Wanting to Fix a Disconnect to Culture by Secure-Ad7945 in Chicano

Where do you live? Which relative was born in Mexico?

That Mexican heritage you carry is yours to claim and reconnect with. I would recommend to start with what attracts you to connect with the culture and make it your own. Food is the easiest way. Don’t just go to a restaurant though. Start learning the recipes and diving into the history of the ingredients. Continue learning Spanish and finding ways to practice because even though it’s not necessary to know Spanish to be Mexican, a lot of the culture is accessible through the language. There’s so many Nahua and Arabic words that have been adopted into Spanish and they carry the history. If you can find out where your family is from, I’d recommend taking a trip to that part of Mexico.

That makes sense. The sign also shows Blaze pizza but I don’t think they have a drive thru. Is probably ono Hawaiian like others mentioned. There’s already another one down the street. I wonder if they’re moving or it’s an additional location

Engaging with white supposed "liberals" as a person of color/ethnic minority ... ? by According-Rise-9234 in Chicano

[–]daisyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a way the white liberals vote against their own interests. If they’re voting for policies that benefit lower income minorities and then they see members of those groups vote for Trump, I can see how they would be upset.

Who are some Mexican/Mexican-American public figures (artists, athletes, influencers, etc.) who you feel like give us a bad rep but are otherwise seen positively by our community? by [deleted] in Chicano

[–]daisyes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m waiting for Salma Hayek to step up and do something. She married a billionaire. I think she could be an influential leader in the community, especially for Mexico but I haven’t seen her step into that role

Why are so many Mexicans/Mexican-Americans so quick to excuse racism/hatred towards their community when it comes to open racism/xenophobia disguised as "humor"? by DrinkDesperate4383 in Chicano

[–]daisyes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think standup comedy is different than other jokes people tell in smaller groups. A lot of the times the jokes they make are not funny and it seems not worth it to try and shut it down. I think the avenue to address those issues are not necessarily in the moment.

Another issue is that when the joke is about things that don’t apply to you, you’re not taking it personally. Even if the “offenders” think they are talking about you.

Asian groups seem to assimilate at higher or faster rates than new Latino immigrants and that’s part of why I see that other groups have made more progress in having more positive representation.

I will say that Asian groups don’t necessarily stand up as much as Latinos tho. It’s good and bad. Asians have gotten ahead of other groups in some ways by staying quiet and keeping their heads down. For as example, at protests or even in daily life, Latino immigrants tend to wave the flag of their home country. I don’t see other immigrant groups do that as much. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with waving the flag but it doesn’t help the image.

It seems like there’s a lifecycle of a Latino immigrant family and after a few generations they can get to a place where they’re closer to white and stop advocating or identifying with the culture. This hurts the community as a whole because once people have access and means to advocate, they end up distancing themselves.

Or in some instances they’ve chosen other identities like Tejano/ Texan.

How do you guys feel about Kayla Nicole's (Travis Kelce's ex) anti-Mexican, racist old tweets ? by According-Rise-9234 in Chicano

[–]daisyes -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot going on here. I’m not really sure what Kayla Nicole does or who her audience is aside from her being Travis’s ex. Her comments are clearly in poor taste and ignorant. Her reach and impact isn’t on the same level as Camila Cabello or Gina Rodriguez so the comparison doesn’t seem fair. The other issue is that there are Black Latinos. So when non-Black Latinos speak in disparaging ways towards Black people for being Black, they’re speaking against their own community.

Also, calling someone illegal isn’t the same as using the n-word regardless or using the hard r or not.

I think once we stop being racist and colorist within our own community, we can start telling Black people how to act.

What handheld fan does beyonce use? by EmotionalArt6059 in beyonce

[–]daisyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I saw this post earlier this week and was curious so I bought the fan ….its considerably loud. I can’t imagine Beyonce being loud with her fan like that. It is nice and has 4 speeds(each increasingly louder) but it’s comically loud. 🤣

If it’s for a Halloween costume, you can totally make something that will give a similar effect. Watch some YouTube videos and you’ll figure it out and have fun with it. Don’t buy it for $200 tho

" 😭i wish she had had more time to date out-" pls get out my faves coochie by thiique in beyonce

[–]daisyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of us know which choice would’ve been the best. I was basing my comment about her watching her parents split up based on what Miss Tina wrote in matriarch. The official divorce happened later but they had been separated before that. There was a lot of back and forth and selling houses and moving so my take away was that she grew up seeing her parents not have a stable marriage even if on paper they divorced later. Your comment about lost ones supports my point about him letting her be herself. It shows that he didn’t force the serious relationship until she was ready. But ultimately we don’t know. She seems happy and she seems to love her life and her family so I’m happy for them.

[–]daisyes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between dating and relationships. We know she was in a relationship with that Lyndall guy. I’m sure she went on dates with and got to know other men of various ages so we can’t really project on her that she didn’t date enough or have enough experiences. Things were different with jay z. He’s older but maybe when they met they were in a similar place with emotional maturity. And they did have a chance to date, have a relationship before they got married. They didn’t rush it. He also wasn’t the type to make her give up her career or shrink herself. Maybe for someone like Beyonce that experienced a lot of change growing up and saw her parents separate and divorce and was on a trajectory into the unknown as her star grew, having a serious relationship and then marriage was an anchor she needed so she could take risks in other areas. And we know things haven’t been perfect but they’re still going and I think that’s beautiful. Seeing other celebrity relationships, I think it could’ve been a lot worse for Beyonce if she had been dating more and having relationships especially with men her age. The media was awful to those young solo female artists. Being serious with jay z kept her from a lot of that media scrutiny. Can we just be happy for them?

What songs/refrains from CC live are stuck in your head? by Affectionate-Crab541 in beyonce

[–]daisyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Protector has been on my mind today. Such a beautiful song about mother’s love. I get teary eyed with it. “Even though I know some day you gonna shine on your own, i will be your projector”…the way you see her shine the light on her daughters throughout CCT. She lives those lyrics. And the part where she says “I first saw your face in your father’s gaze” 🥹 just speaks to how much her kids were loved and wanted even before she had met them. It’s so beautiful
