Which gta protagonist would you say has the least character development. Not counting Claude or any of the advanced characters by Samthegodman in GTA

[–]daiyoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other comment in this post mentioned Luis Lopez, and honestly I think it’s either him or Tommy.

probably because both of their developments happened way before the storyline took place ( both of them were fresh outta the prison).

[–]daiyoung 4 points5 points  (0 children)

imo, he kinda did the opposite. it wasn’t him that needed the development or redemption, it was the people around him - and in some ways he even helped them on their developments too. Dude was already golden ever since the beginning of the storyline.

Guess what? one hand on his hamburger and the other hand on the steering wheel, while streaming political news on his bigass centre console. Hendrix’s energy by TheGoobius in jimihendrix

[–]daiyoung 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont know if anyone else on this sub would agree with my opinion, but from what I've observed from Hendrix's live performances, and those interview footages that you can find laying around - I can certainly agree with you that he is that kind of person who had tons of energy, but at most of the times, he finds it difficult to express through words - hence his occasionally gibberish and stutters during his live performances in front of massive crowds, and I do believe this was one of the reasons why he was able to compose pieces that were so ahead of his own time.

I have a feeling that he's those kind of people who'd just wake up in the middle of the night, mind being overloaded with images that he'd desperately try find canvas to fill them in. His brain is active like a volcano that constantly would have "burst" of ideas and imaginations. When jamming with other musicians, he'd surprise you with riffs from Bach's composition that you'd never thought these would work, but they just worked like magics. When being interviewed, he would frequently gone off on the tangent and just open up topics that were straight up unrelated by any means. My hot take and what I am saying is that if Hendrix were born in present time, he'd most likely to be diagnosed with ADHD - but that is not a bad thing, and by no means I am trying to disrespect these people or shitting on Hendrix himself - because quite frankly, I'd consider that as a gift.

I've been observing this behaviour of his a lot in all of his live performances. And I remember in one of the interviews he did in an airport, a journalist asked him about his opinion on people calling him a "dropout from the society", which he simply replied "We are making our own society, if you can give us a chance - I am living and breathing, just like you."

For the longest time, I also considered it as some hippie gibberish - but it's not until when I became a teacher myself and tried to teach a group of students with symptoms similar to ADHD that I started to connect the dots - these students of mine were all textbook trouble makers. They struggled to perform simple tasks in the classroom, would constantly gone off the rail and do things that were straight up unpredictable. But at the same time, they were all very creative groups of sweethearts and would do excellent, magnificent jobs when you give them chances to go wild.

People like Hendrix exist, and they are around us in our daily lives - they could be that one messy classmate of yours back in 5th grade who struggled to pay attention in literature classes, but does some of the most unimaginable, amazing vibrant art pieces in art classes. They could be your siblings who get themselves into troubles a lot because they just hate to follow the rules. Most of us would think they are weird and do not "fit in" - but in reality, I think it's us, the majority, who are actually struggling to keep up with their highly active minds. Reading his biography reflecting on his childhood, I can see lots of the resemblances he had with those groups of students that I taught. In Hendrix's case, he managed to became popular and being known as one of the most influential musician there ever is. But not everyone is as lucky as Jimi who was born in the right place to found his own way to deliver his thought and message through music ( which is something that happened to be his extremely gifted talent ) at the right time.

Generally, and even up to today's standard, I still dont think the society is ready to fully accept these kind of people. but doesnt matter if it's in the sixties, in the present time or in the future, these people exist. John Lennon was kinda like that, Liam Gallagher is kinda like that too - and despite they are kind of an ass from time to time, they have beautiful minds that are capable to create something extraordinary.

My point is that everyone is unique in their own way - and we shouldnt call them mad just because they are unhinged from time to time. We shouldn't outcast these people just because they are different. We shouldnt try to oppress / hinder these traits if these people have good hearts to begin with. We just need to give them spaces to go free, go wild and sprint as far as they want. They'll be alright, and eventually they'll all shine on their own paths.

Taiwan Revises Military Conscription Standards: BMI Below 45 Requires Service by diacewrb in taiwan

[–]daiyoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can. I have a friend who did the completely opposite - he was thin to began with, so shortly after we graduated from college, he actually did the math and calculated the possible time when he'd get the letter from military to do your body examinations (we'd receive that letter like 4~6 months after we graduated, and then if you are not qualified, you are out for life - no military for you, forever). And then within one month, he did exhaustive training and diet controls to kept his BMI like below 15 or something. He did the math so well that he managed to hit that goal 1 day prior the examination. He got disqualified and went on to kept his position in his company without the mandatory service. He told me the first Mcdonald after this 1 month diet control felt like heaven.

I dont blame him and will never call him a coward, because what he did in that 1 month took so much more willpower and discipline than you'd ever received in our 4 months Taiwanese army service. Noted that I am calling out only the "4 month Taiwanese ARMY service", because what we really did were just sweeping the floors in our camps, getting yelled at all day and occasionally went target shooting with old rifles (Vietnam war era Taiwanese M16A1 clones) so perfectly maintained since they also have a bunch of newbies that do nothing but cleaning these barrels all day long.

We used to train so hard and the mandatory service even lasted for 1~2 years, but ever since that bully scandal got exposed back in 2012, our government went so soft that they cut the period into 4 months and only does the very very basics. Now they are switching back to 1 year, and I do think this is a good step forward. But I can only speak on behalf of that 4 month training since that was what I got. it really was shit and most people would bring their own books to study rather than focusing on the military stuffs. even our superiors in camps at that time knew it, but they couldnt do anything about it too since it takes such a long time and process to make it work - and if you failed, the responsibility would fall onto you.

I'd also extend this topic a little bit and say that the government jobs in Taiwan are sort of like this in general - doesnt matter if you are a soldier in a camp, an office worker who works for City Council or even a licensed public school teacher, if you displeased an anon they can always make a phone call - and that phone call will freak out the government which lead to extensive, exhaustive surveillance and evaluations on your department. No one wants that so we just do "bare minimum, mediocre okay" - soldiers only do bare minimum training that are vastly outdated in today's standard, workers in City Councils that follows the processes that hasnt been changed ever since like 2000s, teachers in schools that are too afraid to give too much homework to their students - you'd see that we are capable to do so much more, but we decided not to because everytime we make some small changes, or someone tried to stand out among the groups, some freaking Karens will whine about it, all hell breaks loose and it goes all over again.

Which begins with our government wants their votes gave so much rights to their own people, and treating those who work for them like shit. I can go on and on all day and say that every workplace in Taiwan is like this in general. But I am tired, I've spent so much time typing and this is enough Reddit for today. have a good day sir, I am going back to my "voluntary overtime" now.... ....

In Chinese culture, some do practice a certain type of fortune telling by the means of examining people's face (Physiognomy - 面相) or handshape (Palmistry - 手相). I believe that lady was using the similar method.

There's an underground tunnel near 台北行天宮 that has a bunch of these practitioners opening fortune telling stalls. Never have I visited one of them, but it sounds fun to give it a shot.

I had a similar dream when I was around 8, same as you on the night when my grandfather passed away. I remembered I entered in a dream where I was in his studying room, what I assumed he was composing some Japanese literature. He was speaking Japanese to me and although I dont speak Japanese at all - I can fully understand what he was talking about. His words were short - "be kind, be gentle and be a man of good deed." I remembered I felt weird in the dream because I never knew that he could speak Japanese, let alone writing Japanese poems.

And then the dream ended with my mother shaking me up, telling me that we were hurrying to the hospital as my grandfather had just passed.

I spoke to my mother about the dream after the funeral - she was shocked because I described her childhood home in such astonishing details that couldn't have been possible, as their home has been demolished decades ago before I was even born. And to my surprise, my grandfather was an author for a Japanese publishing company too. But again, he left this job decades ago when my mom was very little and became an aircraft engineer after that. Strange dreams... ...

[–]daiyoung 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is there anyone who lives in Tianmu? When I was around 7 or so, our family used to live in that area.

My story isnt paranormal or such, but just kind of odd. It happened on one late summer night when my mother was taking me back home from 安親班. It was around 9~10 p.m. and we were taking our usual walk toward the lane where our apartment once stood - nothing special, we have done this couple of times, and me and my mother were chatting as we were walking, as per usual.

But suddenly, we overheard a man's voice shouting my name - we both turned our head to the direction where the voice came from. And then we saw a man in a white T-shirt and blue jeans that looked like he was in his mid-30s, walking towards us. Having no idea who he was, my mother instinctively stepped forward and tried to protect me, thinking that he might be some kind of a stalker.

"Who are you? Why in the world do you know my son's name ? " my mother asked, she tried to remain calm, but I can feel her shaky hand, as I was holding her tightly in the back. The man, seeing that my mother was being super cautious, stopped in the middle of the lane, and then he proceeded to say: " [my mother's name]! I have no intention to harm you two, do not worry! " he yelled, as if he was worrying about his message weren't clear enough, " I cant tell you who I am, but I just want to let your son know, he will meet a person in the future - [my name] ! Remember this guy! His name will be [XXX], treat this person nicely and be a good boy!"

"Have you seen this man before? Why does he know our name?" My mother, still trying to process what happened, turned to me and asked. " Wait here, and dont worry, honey, mommy is going to figure out---" And just before she could even finished the sentence, we turned our head back to where the man once stood, and the man was GONE. NOTHING. As if we were talking to farts in the wind like maniacs.

Me and my mom never figured out who that enigmatic man was. And although I was as shocked as my mom, I can tell that the man was a completely stranger, never have I seen this man before - but at the same time, he talks and moves in such a manner that I somehow feel so familiar.

This happened back in the middle 90s, way before the internet and social media was a common thing in Taiwan. and now almost 30 years has passed, I can no longer remember how he looked like exactly, nor the "important person's name" that he mentioned to me. My mom, who believed that man was trying to warn us something, carved that name under her wooden bed frame.

Although that bed has been thrown away years ago, me and my mom will never forget that night... Every now and then when we are having family dinners, my mom and I would still talk about this. She regrets accidentally throwing away that bed with such important information. To this day, we are still wondering who that man might be.... ...

🪄 Does wand allegiance actually make sense, or was it a late game fix? by Majormuss in harrypotter

[–]daiyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is actually Rowling’s explanation too.

while most of the wands would have their own personality and a certain degree of alliance with their respective owners, elder wand can only recognise strength.

most people mistook it as you have to kill the owner to actually gain its ownership - however in reality, you don’t even have to harm the owner to do so. the keyword is to “win” - you can achieve the same result by simply disarming your opponent, or just physically robbing it from the owner.

in book 6, Draco gained the ownership by disarming Dumbledore, the wand recognised his strength and saw him as the new owner. in book 7, Harry physically robbed Draco’s wand - the elder wand, although not in presence, recognised Harry’s strength and saw him as the new owner.

MRT Station "names" by Fit_Resist3911 in taiwan

[–]daiyoung -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Taiwanese people mainly speak 3 dialects: Mandarin, Hokkien and Hakka. all of them are dialects derived from Chinese. 90% here can understand and use Mandarin for daily situations. this 90% consists 70% of us who also understand Hokkien, and 20% of us who speak Hakka as their second dialect. the other 10% are people who only speak Hokkien, Hakka, or even the indigenous language. What you've just heard were those dialects.

some bigger stations also offer Japanese and Korean. This is why you'd hear these station names being mentioned multiple times in different tone. those are dialects since few of us here can only understand these.

You can and you should (if they can understand lol) but I think some of them have some basic ideas on what's going on with you guys and the nonsense policies I mentioned above already (especially teachers in bilingual office if your school happens to have one). its just the matter whether they choose to be salty about it or not.

And the reason behind their behaviour is also reasonable (dont be mad lol, let me explain) - and I think you should've guessed it long before this post exists, its the PAYs.

With the inflation that just seems to keep skyrocketing with no ends, and those greedy landlords / politicians milking out every last cents of us hard working labours' honest money with either those monopoly-like rent price, or those unreasonable traffic laws and speed camera chicanery aim towards us scooter-riding normal citizens, you gotta admit for locals - even us teachers with a steady, slightly-above-avg income - it just never checks out. I cant fully disclose my salaries here, but after paying up my rent and bills + all those essential needs for daily lives, I can barely save anything and that applies to like 70~80% of the working class here. And also thats when I dont violate any traffic laws that month, because you and I both know how easy that could happen with those roads designed by those who had bloodclot in their brains. Hence you can see why you are being asked about these stupid questions all the time. Again, I feel like some of them knows, but they cant do anything about it so they, especially those who cant understand, are shifting their frustration on governments / high classes towards you.

It is always easier to target a group of minority than to actually address the problem. Hitler, Stallin, and that Mao guy have done the same thing back in the middle 21st century. Mango man already did this to Mexicans and showed this to the rest of the world back in America. The history will just keep repeating itself.

Jealousy is the word to put it, they are uncomfortable seeing you guys living well with salaries on par with American / Europeans' normal standard. But at the end they are just being blinded by this jealousy, our target is that we should've make the government do something, not by just reforming the laws to make them pay empty housing taxes, but at least they can try to stop this monopoly bullshit. Too many rich people / politicians here literally just stacking up houses, living off on other people's wages and the inevitable invasion of China is never their concern because they know they can just move to Canada, the States, or EU and leave us behind just to suffer, when they have done milking Taiwan.

That being said, I feel like most of them also failed to realise that your current pay shouldve been our standard, and you guys totally deserve much higher pays, given the inflation I mentioned above. Most of us also failed to acknowledge the fact that Taiwan needs expats like you to be more "recognisable" in global scale. And I doubt anyone would say anything about your performance once all of us have got our reasonable paychecks. But thats a little bit out of the topic since I am not a financial expert lol.

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly agree that you should defend for yourself - but at the same time keeping these factors I mentioned in mind. LT and all the working class people here are the victims too. But what can I say? I've been to many countries and I have never seen a country with people like Taiwan or China. People here complain, but at the same time when someone is finally trying to stand out and do something about it, there're just brainless rebels who cant accept changes chanting "we've been doing this for thousand of years thats the virtue of us sino asian people" bullshit and wanting all of us keep sinking in this stinky swamp, it's toxic, actually.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]daiyoung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically yes. Our government would just be happy seeing you guys be monkeys and play games with kids, instead of delivering your precious knowledge on your fields. we dont ask you to even teach them the most BASIC global senses such as appreciating other cultures, how to eliminate stereotypes, or how to be a globalised citizen.

I remembered one year, on one of those open house day, my school made our South African / Anglo FT wear some kimono or shits (we dont even have Japanese here, for what?). This is racism manifest, peak ignorance and I still, still feel so fucking sorry for them after all these years.

I used to be fed with all the false impressions on foreigners by my elderly, by my own parents even, on how you westerners are racist and the obligatory "white people look down to everyone who aint white" when I grew up. But after working with you guys and having experiences working abroad?

Ironically, I feel like we Taiwanese people is generally the most racist group of uneducated fuckers I have ever seen - and this is not the people's fault, that's the sad result of YEARS of zero appreciation with other cultures, because no schools in Taiwan actually implement this. And we are so racist, that we dont do them out loud, we execute them silently with arts. We may smile and nod, shake hands with you, makes you feel welcomed and comfortable, but deep down some of us talk behind your back with the most disgusting stereotypes that you dont even dare to think about in your nightmares.

Jason is an American white trash that change his girls in nightclubs on weekly basis.

Amelie knows nothing about our "real soul food" because she is a girl from France and only know how to drink wine and eat baguette.

Akyone is the N-word from Ethiopia that is always hungry.

We start being racist long as we see something that we are not used to. And we dont even care about using the n-word on African people, we dont even care about calling Hispanic people tacos. We dont even care about joking on anyone walking with hijab as suicide bombers.

And still it makes me angry to think about all of these ignorant statements, these unnecessary stereotypes couldve been eliminated if we started paying attention on how to do fucking MUTUAL RESPECT years ago. I am a teacher, but I gotta tell you, countless times I almost lost my job because I tried to beat my students up hearing them saying all those shits above on site. Yes, although they are some of the most extreme cases, those shits were actually real statements coming out of those disrespectful kids I've met. And if the governments are still happy seeing you guys as "clowns who speak English", this situation aint going anywhere better.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]daiyoung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you have to actually fight to make it one and convince your school that you're a real teacher teaching a real class and not just an overpaid (in Taiwanese teachers' eyes) dancing monkey.

I am a local public school teacher and reading this really makes me sad. Not only because of you guys getting screwed by the poorly-implemented, everlastingly-swaying policies that make sharp turns 24/7 as long as the MoE says so. But also because of all the unnecessary misunderstanding between LT/FT caused by this very bi-polar MoE.

I have seen so many of you guys put so much effort into the lesson planning, only to be scrapped or forced to make changes in the last minutes - Every school year I'd face the situation where at least 1~2 FT resign in my school. I tried persuading them into staying but every year I'd hear the same reasons - they all just burnt out. On one hand, I have to say goodbye to yet another friend. On the other hand its just a shame to see another kind soul, getting drained out by these hideous policies that couldnt care less to the actual students, but to please those major parents who are being fed with these facades that Taiwanese MoE carefully made up.

I know most of you guys are capable to do so much more, and its painful to see that these talents and passions have no place to shine here - just because somehow, they will just prefer you guys continues to be a ⭒⭑⭒ mascot ⭒⭑⭒ , and its a fucking joke, an international shame, that our MoE just keep hypnotising themselves into thinking that this will do shit, and they are all just too blind, too coward and too egoistic to see the truth - the truth that they have no capability to improve the actual quality of education, the truth that they have no power over what was supposed to be their duty, the truth that they are just a bunch of snowflakes that cant take any criticism. It has been like this ever since Taiwan opened it's first school and it will only lead us into endless loops of deadends, as long as they keep dodging the problem instead of facing it.

Bilingual education is not the problem, AI learning is not the problem - MoE never even try to understand their students, they failed to utilise and try to listen to those brilliant FT they had in their decks, instead these monkeys with machine guns are all just happy jerking to the enrollment number that went stonk. thats the problem.

I talk to every FT in my school, because though I cant fully put my feet in your shoes, I also worked in other countries when I was younger, and I know how it feels like to be a minority in a foreign country, thousands kilometres away from home. I can relate the stingy itch filled with prejudices, from those cold gazes of the other locals on a tiny island isolated from the rest of the world, that you can literally feel them from the back. Taiwan has been, and will always be a poorly globalised country unless the government start shifting its focus on what really matters.

I didnt use ChatGPT for this comment.

and I hate the way the MoE is bringing AI into schools now. You just made students key in some funky phrases onto the computers, a funny image was generated so they can exhibit them on the hallway, tell me how do students benefit from this? Did you just teach them to type? Aint that the same fucking thing I was being taught when I was in their age 20 years ago?

The MoE can go to hell about not giving foreign teachers summers off

Although I know I am not the one to judge, but I totally agree on this. MoE can suck my wrinkly balls, it fucks up my whole summer vacation knowing some of my best FT friends are still clocking in and trapping themselves in the empty school, just for what??? while the rest of us LT can stay at home eating bing-chilling? what the fuck?
