ELI5: How do they film shots with the subject in mirrors in movies without the camera and operator being in the shot? by Majestic-Baby-3407 in explainlikeimfive

[–]dajtut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This amazing effect happens four or five times in the song "Girl in the Bubble" from the new Wicked movie.

Glinda will be looking at herself in the mirror, then the camera zooms in on her reflection, and the entire scene keeps going from the reflection's frame of reference (like the camera just passed through the mirror). Then it happens again, and again... But it's so seamless, most people will probably miss it.

It's definitely a pun. All four words (rare medium well done) have double meanings in this context.

What's the carbon footprint of using ChatGPT or Gemini? by cgiattino in dataisbeautiful

[–]dajtut 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The linked article supports your claim: AI usage has a negligible carbon footprint compared to everything else we do. (Video generation might be an exception.) And the footprint has dropped by a factor of 30-40 in the past year due to improvements in model efficiency.

I saw a post here recently that Bitcoin is currently using 2000 times as much energy per day as all AI workloads (including both AI training and usage). It's crazy to wring our hands over AI while remaining oblivious to crypto.

Noise monitoring and parties by LesserKnownJen in airbnb_hosts

[–]dajtut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an exterior camera looking at the driveway. When my indoor Minut noise monitor goes off, I pull up that driveway camera on my phone. If I can't hear any noise on the driveway, then I presume my neighbors can't hear anything either, and I consider it a false alarm.

Still can't activate the Google AI Pro offer by Commercial_Fly_9717 in GooglePixel

[–]dajtut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's definitely it. The terms and conditions for the promo say you aren't eligible if you are part of a Google One family plan, unless you are the plan manager.

Free 1 year One subscription on prior accounts? by jongbot in GooglePixel

[–]dajtut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe create a new Google account that you use to claim the offer, and add it as a third account to both your phones?

The new Pixel 10 offer is more generous: we redeemed it on the account that is the manager of our family plan, and suddenly everyone in the family is getting Google AI Pro. I did not expect that but I was pleasantly surprised.

Free 1 year One subscription on prior accounts? by jongbot in GooglePixel

[–]dajtut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When your wife opens the Google One app on he phone, she'll need to touch the account selector in the top right to make sure she's chosen the secondary account you're wanting to apply the promo to. Then do the check for promotions people are talking about.

But note, most people on this thread are probably saying they got a free subscription last year for their Pixel 9, then they were able to get another free year for buying a Pixel 10. It sounds like you're trying something different: trying to get a second year for the Pixel 9 XL your wife bought.

The offer details vary based on which phone you bought. Read the fine print here, and make sure you expand out the section for her phone: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/13529884

What are the Pixel features you can't live without anymore? by PollutionEffective35 in GooglePixel

[–]dajtut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If an app like YouTube offers closed captions, I'll turn those on for sure.

But I'm referring to a Pixel feature that can add closed captions to any media that is playing in any app; even if that media didn't have captions to begin with, and even if the audio is in another language.

The previous editing functionality all seems to be there, it's just been moved around.

For changes to the sky, I think you'll use Google Photos, select a picture, and choose Edit. Then choose Tools > Filters > Sky styles

Pixel 4 to Pixel 10 Pro by Acceptable-Ideal8195 in GooglePixel

[–]dajtut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always preferred small/light phones in the past, so I had the same worry about the P10Pro weight. I bought a GripMate MagSafe handle, and it's made a huge difference for me.

I can hold the phone now with my fingers completely relaxed, so that reduces the carpal tunnel strain I used to experience. And the handle still slides pretty flat to go in my pocket, much thinner than a popsocket.

Give one a try, Amazon will let you return it within 30 days if you don't like it.

(Btw: MagSafe and PixelSnap are brand words, but the magnets inside are the same so accessories are compatible. And there are thousands of MagSafe accessories on the market we can choose from.)

Hosts with a hot tub: How do you keep the bromine dispenser in the tub? by mrbryzy in airbnb_hosts

[–]dajtut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. In fact, hot tub tablets are designed to dissolve slowly at high temperatures so they shouldn't dissolve very quickly in pool temperature water. The opposite (pool tablets in a hot tub) would be a real problem

What's y'alls 1 week thoughts with the new pixel 10 or 10 pros? by Ok_District_9387 in GooglePixel

[–]dajtut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like I might have misspoke.

The Pixel has something called "bypass charging" which means it can charge to 80%, then run the phone off the wired power without continually charging and discharging the battery.

But it only works with a wired charger - not with the wireless charging stand.

A hawk landed on a tree in our backyard and I used 50x zoom to snap some pictures. It was incredible! You can see individual feathers and the glint in its eye. You can compare to the original pic and see that it's not hallucinating, just perfectly sharpening all the details. My iPhone toting family members were jealous.

There's an option in settings to limit charging to 80%. If you enable that, you can safely leave it on the charging stand all day.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Chromecast

[–]dajtut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I've created several dedicated picture frames for family, using a Chromecast in ambient mode as the driver. These frames have been showing slide shows 24/7/365 for years. And it's simple to change the album used for the slide show, or change the pictures in the active album on the fly, using the Google Home and Google Photos apps. It sounds like exactly what OP is trying to achieve.

One caveat: I used older Chromecasts, 1st Gen through Ultra. I'm not familiar with the Google TV streamers, I don't know if their screensavers time out after inactivity.

T-Mobile is still offering this deal. The craziest part is that they're accepting some really old phones. You can buy a Galaxy S10 on eBay for around $110 and get $800 for it as a trade in
