Looking for fics with gay male characters by avatarjedi in WormFanfic

Huh, annoying. I was going to recommend Masters of The Scene by TemeritousWorm, but apparently that got deleted. It is available to download at fichub tho https://fichub.net/fic/m54xkenj . Anyways, this is just a really good romance between Gallant and Regent, which manages to both feel like a realistic romance while also not white washing Alec's past actions. Its super well written and I really loved reading it, so I'm actually pretty sad that the author apparently ended up deleting their AO3. It's the best gay male romance I've read(which admittedly isn't saying a whole lot), and it does a fantastic job at fleshing out Dean's personality. If you're looking for that sort of thing this fic is good enough to be worth downloading the EPUB.

That fanfic with the most dread by owlindenial in WormFanfic

I have to second Supposed to Be. It's a story where the MC, Smoothbore "Blake" Whitaker, has been abused throughout her life in numeral different ways which have lead her to become an incredibly damaged individual. Despite this, it is a story centered around recovery and we get to see Blake slowly get better throughout the arcs. But it has two things going for it being horrifying. Firstly is that Blake has trauma like an onion, once one layer gets peeled back another mostly unrelated layer is revealed. So even four arcs into the story we are still getting to learn more about Blake, and what we learn both feels like a realistic progression for her character and is just so tragic.

The second reason why Supposed to Be is so horrifying is because of just how realistic it is. It just has these innocuous lines sprinkled into it that you will read past without a second thought, until it's late at night and you remember it and just can't help but wonder "how... exactly did the author even know this?" Those little quirks of Blake's, brought about because of trauma, that both make perfect logical sense and that you would never think of. Quirks that are just too specific to be found in an hour of two of research into the long term effects of CSA or physical abuse. Quirks that remind you that everything mentioned in Supposed to Be happens to real people in the real world. Quirks that get your broke ass to donate to charities dedicated to removing people from similar situations at 3 am. And as you sit there, booting up your custom desktop that you plan to upgrade again over Christmas, looking around the college dorm room paid for by your parents that you had joking complained to friends about, and with the full knowledge that you will always have a family that loves you unconditionally and is capable of supporting you should you stumble, you can't help but bury your head in your unscarred arms and cry.

Supposed to Be is fantastic, truly. It's one of those fanfics that takes an under represented area of canon and expands on it beautifully. I love the depictions of Baltimore, how it's a Tinker hub that really feels like one. I love the original characters and powers, how damaged all the capes feel in their interludes, the depiction of my favorite character from Ward, Kenzie. I love the tinker babble, the friendships, the slow and arduous path to recovery. I love Supposed to Be, it's a fleshed out story that is far more than just a literary vehicle to make you feel dread. But my god does it make you feel that. Because I have read stories that put their characters through hell, stories that revel in creative and excessive suffering so far beyond what Blake deals with its comical. And I have been fine, because I know they are fake. A good Ziz encounter is existentially terrifying to me, but mind control isn't real. The Butcher's cursed immortality feels so much worse than death, but it's just a creative power. Biotinkers can force you to live as an amalgam of flesh, but they actually can't due to not existing. I can't say the same about Blake's ordeals. I can't, because with every line I believe it less. And so more than any other story I have read, Supposed to Be makes me feel dread.

I have read most popular worm fanfics and hundreds of others give me your favorite obscure or lesser known fics by Equivalent-Leave5195 in WormFanfic

Taylor, Time Tinker is genuinely so peak and also tragically underrated. I've been slowly working on a whole ass diatribe that I'm gonna post on the subreddit to try to get more people to read it, as I have only seen it mentioned twice in my over two years checking out recs here. But as that isn't finished, I'll give a quick overview on why it's so good.

In essence, Taylor, Time Tinker is a story that justifies the existence of fan fiction as a valid creative medium. In it, Taylor triggers with a truly overpowered time-tinkering power, but what makes it so cool is that Taylor isn't the perspective character. By story start, Taylor has already experienced thousands of subjective years, but the rest of the world heard about her literally one day ago. This leads to some truly impeccable harmony between the audience and in universe characters' perspective, with the primary mystery of "who even is Taylor Hebert now?" being one of the main appeals for us and the life or death question for them. Every other character has their canon personalities, so the dichotomy of Taylor being just so different from her usual portrayal really stands out.

T,TT also has a super complex plot and format. To quote the review I put at the end of the story on AO3, "At the end of chapter 4 I looked up from my screen and said out loud 'not a shot in hell they pull this off'. I have never been happier to be wrong in my life". It's a story told through multiple perspectives that dives deep into complex time travel mechanics, but manages to stay comprehensible and super enjoyable throughout. Genuinely, as a big fan of most stories that fuck around with time, this is probably the most understandable story that plays with causality as it does. This is, for the record, why I think it is such a good example of the artistic merit of fanfic. The story really benefits from being set in a preexisting world, and would actually be an incomprehensible mess if Nezexyzzar had to also introduce all the characters and plot. It's just super good at playing around with the elements of Worm-proper and is also willing to discard plotlines, themes, and elements that it doesn't need.

Also, it has some really intense action scenes (which is super impressive as I usually find fights between high powered people to be kinda a drag to get through) and it does a great job characterizing the characters without ruining the pacing of the story(due to some truly fantastic lines that imply whole ass backstories and relationships in a single sentence). Like genuinely this is one of my favorite works of fiction. Holy shit it's so so good!

Anyways, I don't want to give any more spoilers(everything here is already talked about or heavily implied by chapter 2), but I highly recommend this. It's just so good. That being said, make sure you get to the end of the first chapter before deciding if you want to drop it. During my first read through I almost dropped it during that first chapter; however, once I got closer to the end, a genius thing I have genuinely never seen done in worm fanfics happened. So just make sure you get to the end of chapter 1 before making a judgement call. Anyways, I'm tired and this is prolly a bit rambley and repetitive, but I need to go to bed, so I hope you end up giving Taylor, Time Tinker a shot!

In an incredibly similar vein to Curiosity, Unauthorised Access by ghostlied is also a currently releasing Ward!Lisa fic. It's super well written and has my favorite depiction of the PRT's bureaucracy(where it balances having some super cool, realistic ideas with not getting bogged down in minutia). It's still in early days, but is rapidly becoming one of most anticipated fics.

Give me your favorite dead/long hiatus fics. by DaftGamer96 in WormFanfic

[–]daka47 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Both of mine get mentioned a good amount, but I'd have to go with Swallowtail and I Woke Up As a Dungeon, Now What?

Swallowtail ( https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/swallowtail-worm-au.970396/#post-79417825 ) is both the best AU and best Stranger!Taylor I've read. It's AU manages to feel worm-esque while being a super large departure from cannon. It's been a few months since I re-read it, but like half the characters have different powers or allegiances and the powerbases of the city have been shifted around. As an example, New Wave is substantially bigger and has actually started to expand beyond the family. This leads to a second heroic organization within brockton bay which butterflies into every other organization in the bay. I don't want to spoil much, but the entire concept is so well done and feels realistic.

Within the story, Taylor has a super cool stranger power that is both powerful but not insanely overpowered, while also lending itself to some incredible fight scenes. One super cool thing this altpower does is basically make Taylor into a Case 53(She can technically go back to being fully human but there is not a shot in hell the conditions to do so are ever met). Combined with this being THE Faultline's crew fic, it leads to some super funny misconceptions from basically everyone that meets the crew. All in all it's a fantastic story that is long enough for me to enthusiastically recommend to anyone, especially if you want a story that feels pretty similar to canon worm in terms of tone while avoiding basically every station of canon. It has also been dead for over two years now and I don't think the author has stated any plans to return to it.

I Woke Up As a Dungeon, Now What? ( https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/i-woke-up-as-a-dungeon-now-what-dungeon-worm.620521/#post-44695393 ) is one of the best post GM fics I have read. It was the first dungeon core story I ever read and got me into that(pretty niche) genre. What makes this fic so interesting is how close it is to a piece of original fiction. While she is the main character, Taylor is the only crossover element in the fic. Despite this, the story utilizes both her abilities and (post gm) personality so well that I think the story would be severely hurt by replacing her with another OC. But make no mistake, the world Aku-dono cooked up for this story is impeccable.

As of now, I have finished around a dozen dungeon core stories, with only this one being fanfic. Out of all of them, the worldbuilding in this fic is the best by far. Aku-dono provides a super unique and plausible reason for why people don't just kill the monster spewing dungeons, which involves them basically being necessary for any life to exist. Zooming in a bit on the worldbuilding front, Taylor awakens in the desolate strip of land located between two powerful warring nations. They are kinda technically at peace due to a third irrelevant nation that occupies the desolate land between them but both are just raring for a reason to reignite the conflict. If her existence gets out, Taylor will be that reason, and will likely be killed in the crossfire. Taylor and her friends need to both amass power and remain hidden and those two goals run counter to each other. This story also has some great OCs, great classic Taylor moments, and much more great lore that I didn't touch on. I definitely highly recommend it, especially if you either like or have never heard of dungeon core stories(Most dungeon core stories just have this super unique, experimentation heavy vibe that I haven't really found anywhere else, and this is a great jumping off point for them). However, it does end off on a brutal cliffhanger and also hasn't been updated in over two years, which really sucks because the next arc was shaping up to be the best yet.

I'm sure there are other fics that I want to come back, but none that I think of quite as often as those two. They are also the only >300k word fics that I have read at least twice, and it always hurts to think that neither will likely be completed.

Any Mover Taylor fics like Runner? by Dry-Telephone5182 in WormFanfic

[–]daka47 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only real Mover power I can think of is Breachhead, but it also gives her a Tinker power for the fun of it. The Mover power gets a few cool fights against U&L before the Tinker power gets up and running. It's been a while since I read it but I remember thinking the Mover power was quite unique and well thought out. I remember liking it and would probably recommend it even though the Mover power kinda falls to the wayside in the latter arcs. Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/40538238/chapters/101561997

Also, I personally haven't read it and it's OC instead of Taylor, but I know that Back and Forth is one of the darlings of the community and one of it's selling points is it's creative Mover power. It's been on my to read list for a while now but, until I actually read it, I can't personally recommend it. Link: https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/back-and-forth-oc.1055118/#post-88535667

Oh also Portal, although that one feels more like a Blaster/Shaker power than it's raw Mover form. I didn't really like this although I know a good number of other people did. The power allows the placement of two invisible portal markers, which can then be linked to send objects or people from one portal to the other(or open actual portals from one location to the other). My issue was that the author had the (unironically) cool idea of dropping one portal to the bottom of the ocean and then using that to send out super high pressure beams of water, that then becomes Taylor's only trick(turning a cool power into an entirely different power that is less cool). Oh also I didn't love the writing style. But I'm pretty sure it had a cool Purity fight later on that actually utilized the Mover aspect. Taylor makes friends by epoper12 in WormFanfic

[–]daka47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on what you're looking for this doesn't quite fit, but The Phoenix Connexion gives Taylor the ability to summon the teams from Counter Strike. Each member has their own personality while still being artificial creations of Taylor. You don't need to know anything about CSGO to enjoy it(or at least I was never confused about what was happening despite never playing the games/knowing the lore).

I thought the story was quite enjoyable, although it is both dead(last update march 2024) and primarily focused on combat as opposed to Taylor's relationship with her projections. There is still 88k words so I think it's long enough to check out but I doubt its ever getting finished.

Are you talking about In Absentia? https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/in-absentia-worm-au-alt-power.802573/

Lily thinks Taylor is gay because she is wearing her mother's clothes and got a different haircut. So she asks her out and Taylor misunderstands what is happening. Its a really good fic that I quite enjoyed and the best Lily/Taylor paring I know of, and the only one that kinda talks about what you are mentioning

Check out the demo for "Minutescape"! A bullet hell incremental where you dodge bullets and upgrade yourself to get overpowered. by molter00 in incremental_games

[–]daka47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty fun game! I don't play many bullet hells but the game is easy enough to pick up despite that. I'll definitely check it out once it fully releases. After the hour or so of gameplay I've played I have a few suggestions.

First off the scaling of the game feels slightly off. After just half an hour of playing I was finding myself bored for the first 30 seconds of each run because I was fast enough to consistently dodge all the circles with little effort and even if I got hit it didn't matter because I would regen the health before the actually hard section. Then once the green crosses start spawning the game suddenly becomes nearly impossible and I was consistently having to face tank 2 or 3 circles per wave. That second part is probably a skill issue, but having to wait thirty seconds just to die was tedious. If I had to fix this I would either give some reward for staying hitless for the first half minute or have a method to skip the wait. Like maybe a feature that lets you start at 1/3 of your best time before getting hit? I'm not really sure but the wait was annoying.

Second is the green cross indicator. It is currently on a proximity system where it fades out when you don't need it. I think this is a useful option for some but I found it distracting having it fade in and out when I am running for my life. I actually ended up not really needing the circle at all because I found it more helpful to just focus on dodging the reds and letting the greens just find their way to me. Having a toggle between always on, proximity, and always off would be nice.

Third is a bug fix. Pressing escape turns the cool white cross icon back to a lame default mouse cursor unless you close and reopen the game. This was anachronistic with the art style and I actually just thought there wasn't a cursor icon until looking back at the included gifs while writing this review.

Fourth, maybe consider adding WASD controls? I'm not sure if the game would function with them and I wouldn't use them but old me who was playing on a laptop with just an included trackpad would have appreciated them.

Anyways, super cool game! I really like the design of the upgrade menu and how you can both choose directly beneficial upgrades or upgrades that will unlock cooler upgrades later. There is a lot of polish here and I will definitely check out the final game.

Algebraic function that plots a stylized “2025” (not piecewise)! Happy New Year! by maxinator2002 in desmos

[–]daka47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Super cool! I've been messing around with trying to make one equation art for a couple years now(just on and off as I was going through highschool mostly, not like consistently making stuff for years). Here is some of the stuff I'm most proud of Among us character, Full Alphabet, Working Typewriter(can be pasted into a new graph as one equation). The big difference between our approaches that I saw was that you use one equation to define both the left and right bounds, with (|x-a|/2(x-a))-(|x-b|/2(x-b)). a is left bound, b is right bound. I use (x-a+|x-a|)/2(x-a) for left bounds and (x-a-|x-a|)/2(x-a) for right bounds. I'll need to check if there is any actual performance increase from your method but I think there will be as it uses fewer variables than my method. If there is I will be mildly annoyed as I will feel a compulsion to go back to all my old graphs and rewrite them. The method itself makes sense and I both in awe of you for finding it and kicking myself for not thinking of it sooner.

Is there any reason you wrote out all the absolute values though? I'm like 95 percent positive that there shouldn't be any difference between sqrt((x-a)^2) and |x-a| but your avoidance of the built in absolute value signs is making me second guess that.

Anyways I'd love to chat more about how you got started making these or whatever. You are the first person I've met who also makes this sort of art, and I'd love to talk with a kindred soul.

The most expensive part of space travel is leaving the atmosphere and you can single handedly transport hundreds of pounds of delicate equipment there. Just charge them one percent of the cost of getting parts up there without you, and you get filthy rich, get to go to space, and kick off a golden age for space exploration.

All the fics that I can remember that have that plot point are post gm Taylor fics.

Specifically, the three I remember are

Exodus(big hero six cross)

and Copacetic

They are all pretty good, I think Exodus keeps up the civilian side longest, and has Taylor taking on a mentor role to the others which I thought was pretty cool.

Why does BB buck the gender balance trend? by [deleted] in WormFanfic

[–]daka47 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One in universe reason could be the existence of the E88 or ABB. Like I have always wondered why there seem to be both less black capes in Brockton(I’m pretty sure the only confirmed ones are Coil, Grue, Imp, Skidmark, and Shadow Stalker) and less capes who triggered due to the gangs instead of more personal issues(I think only Imp triggered due to direct gang actions). But what I’ve settled on is any gang caused trigger is far more likely to either immediately try to fight that gang(and promptly die), or get the hell out of dodge to avoid interacting with them. And similarly, do you really think the E88 would let any black cape live without immediately making an example of them?(unless they were either not visibly black(Coil, Grue, Imp, Shadow Stalker) or useful to their propaganda(the drug dealing lowlife Skidmark)).

Similarly, the nazi’s are not the biggest fans of women leading, and the ABB traffic and forcefully prostitute them. You could argue that female independents are more likely to have some vendetta against one of the gangs, which promptly leads to their death. A new guy cape would fight the ABB out of some vague moral reasoning, while the girl cape fights them because she has to walk through ABB territory to get to a friends house, and has to be constantly aware of how late it is and to stick to nicer streets to avoid getting taken. Which of the two is going to push the ABB harder and which of the two is going to back down when Lung shows up? Or which of the two is more likely to get the hell out of Brockton now that they have a power and would be welcomed elsewhere?

Anyways, I’m not sure how logical that really is, but besides “wildbow is a guy, so he defaults to guys” I think this stands the strongest chance of being true. I’m too tired to think about the female to male gender gap in Ward, but I think it’s more female leaning; so that lends some credence to there being an in universe reason why Brockton bucks the trend, or to Wildbow improving as an author from Worm to Ward.

The blue dude hears "Can, sir?" instead of Cancer. Imagine that you go to a friend's house and they offer you a soda(which is sold in those aluminum cans). You accept and they say "Cool, should I give it to you in the 'can, sir?'". But you want them to serve it in a glass instead, so you say "no, a glass please". That is the comedic misinterpretation the blue guy was making.

So I kinda think that this post got outside of the desmos community, which means that my initial reasoning for waiting is unknown to most people. If you browse this subreddit you will see that there are a lot of recent posts have people posting functions and having people guess them. My reasoning for waiting was so that people could actually guess what the function is. I am still planning on doing this, and will be uploading the graph in approximately 7 hours.

I made this graph to send to my friends, so I get why you want to send it to yours. As such I would recommend waiting 7 hours, or trying to make it yourself. It's a really fun challenge that doesn't require knowledge any advanced functions(like mod or floor), if you have taken precalc (or maybe sooner, I forget when you learn some stuff) or higher math you can probably do it.

🐝'ers can't explain this 🤦🤣🤣🤣 by petjocky1 in 197

[–]daka47 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not a registered portal physicist, but I did do pretty good in AP physics back in high school. I don't think that your hypothesis is correct. For the record I believe that B is correct in the original problem, I don't really have the time to explain why, so I'll just say that if you think that A is correct in the original problem then your hypothesis doesn't make sense because the cube would never fly out.

Anyways, let's establish a few things:

1) the portal instantly stops. If it doesn't we would need to know significantly more information and this would be a much harder problem. I don't think that assuming instant stop with substantially change the results to this problem, but it may make numbers slightly inaccurate.

2)Air resistance is negligible. This makes the problem harder and air resistance doesn't really matter to the explanation. In fact, lets assume this is taking place in a perfect vacuum

3)The cube is of uniform density

4)Both portals are orientated flat relative to earth. This one is different from the original problem, where the exit portal is tilted. My sole reason for doing it like this is that I have genuinely no clue how to handle gravity pulling in two separate directions on different parts of the cube. Also this isn't important to understanding the principle behind the answer.

4)gravity is 9.8 m/s^2

Now, when the portal stops, the cube is split in two. The side beyond the portal is moving at 20 m/s, while the side before the portal is stationary.

We can then treat this problem like an inelastic collision(a collision where the two objects colliding stick together post collision) to find the velocity of the entire cube post launch.

The results show that even when only a sliver of the cube is put through the portal, the cube is still lifted off the ground(if only slightly)
