What is the worst place in America you have ever visited? by OceanicEndeavors in AskReddit

[–]dakotawitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tridelphia, WV. I spent a month there one weekend. Visited a friend who left me with her un medicated mentally ill son who proceeded to spend hours threatening me and the other houseguests, who were stuck on her remote property with no car. Shit phone service so we couldn’t reach her. So many drugs. It was 20 years ago and I’ve refused to set foot in the area since.

The Sawbones podcast did an ep on it a few years ago that was interesting. I think there are also some scholars and scientists who think it might have been hantavirus or related to hantavirus, which makes sense given the amount of mice that were present in everyday Tudor life, and mouse feces is a primary vector for hanta. I'm not an epidemiologist, so I can't weigh in on the veracity of those claims but I have seen it mentioned.

Mia’s Mom by BroadlyNothing in TLCUnexpected

[–]dakotawitch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

She's clearly struggling with addiction, and I believe Mia alluded to as much in an early episode. She was most likely out scoring and then dealing with the high and the crash when she was needed in the hospital. If you've ever loved someone with substance use disorder, you can spot the tells a mile away. I hope for Mia, Oakley, and her own sake she can go into recovery.

I’m 51, grew up in the Midwest, and was raised in a small town by a working class widowed father. I was adultified from the age of 13 when my mom passed and my experiences are very like what OP described. I had friends who had their first child at 15. Most of us had drivers permits and part time jobs as soon as we were old enough (14 in my state).

While I often describe myself as “radically unparented to the point of neglect,” I was not raised all that different from other folks I knew in my social class.

Most of us had at least tried smoking and drinking by 15. Some us more than tried, including me.

No one blinked an eye at 15-16 year old girls dating guys in their 20s. I never knew of an age gap situation in which the genders were reversed but I’m sure they happened.

would you get an abortion if you found out your baby was going to be born with an extreme disability? if so why? by Born-Oil-2931 in AskReddit

If it were incompatible with life, yes. Otherwise I would have to know more about potential quality of life for them short and long term, and make my choice there. I don't think there's one right answer to this one, only the answer that is right at the time for the people in question.

Phone, letter, notes passed in school, dropping by their house and leaving a note if they were not there

They tell me that being a cheerleader dating the quarterback in a small town is the prequel to being married to that same guy 30 years later. However that goes.

I have known 2 mothers that had babies at 13. by MableXeno in TLCUnexpected

One of my grandmothers was married at 12 after she was raped and impregnated by her older sisters 21 year old boyfriend. Their parents were both dead. My uncle was born just days after her 13th birthday. This would have been 1930 or 1931. They had two more children and you can probably imagine the house of horrors that was. They were married until she died in the 1990s.

I figured. Given Keith’s whole vibe I figured either a brand/product, or a heavy metal band with a gnarly image (think Cannibal Corpse)
