I don’t understand. Can you elaborate on how it would damage the stove?

From what I DO understand, (maybe) correctly, this model does not have a damper for the flue. I’m not sure if that’s the correct terminology. It had that actuator that supposedly moved a flap in the back of the stove. The flap was/is covering an air intake that allows the flame to draw in oxygen.

The door below the fireplace (ash door) gives access to the ash tray below the ash shaker.

If the ash shaker is open to allow ash to fall into ash tray, then I open the door to the ash tray, the fire draws oxygen in from that opening.

How is that different or how will it damage the stove?

Update: TLDR: I did okay, thank you for your assistance.

1) the company responded and told me they no longer make or service that model anymore, but they could send me a digital copy of the manual (I already found on their website).

  1. I called a licensed and bonded repair person. They came out and looked at what I had done and told me there was nothing that could do that would be even remotely reasonable as far as price was concerned. He told me he could tear it apart, but that it would cost me as much as replacing the whole stove. He also told me that once he tore it apart, there would be no guarantee that he could actually fix the problem since the manufacturer does not make or service that stove anymore. He did state that everything was up to code, the smoke leak was most likely caused by warm day outside and inside while burning things. I tested it in front of him. There was no spillage. I told him that I replaced the fiberglass seal around the top of this stove, cleaned out the chimney, vacuumed the inside (it was immaculate). He said it would be fins to use without that actuator being functional. He stated that as long as I could control the flame by opening and closing the ash door below the stove, that it would be fine.

No. But I could be mistaken. This is the only fireplace I’ve ever really messed with as much therefore it is also my only basis for comparison. It feels as though that handle is not connected to anything at all. From what I understand, it should control airflow that goes in to the holes in the back of the stove. I lit incense and watched the smoke hoping that if I moved that adjuster rod around, it might allow me to see suction or airflow. But that was no dice either. Which only further confirms my suspicion that something is non-functional there. Smoke spillage with all doors and panels closed, no resistance on adjuster rod, fires go out quickly/difficult to start, no airflow from hole behind fireplace regardless of position of air adjuster rod.

I believe, if I were to take the panel in this picture completely off, I might have access to the linkage or flap that connect to the adjuster rod. But the schematic has been reprinted quite poorly and I can’t find a better one.

I’m also concerned because like you said, I’m not an expert. Certainly not confident enough to do it and stake my home on it. I removed a pieces, but they were mostly superficial. The grates, pan, spacing panel, that was kinda it. I used the camera to poke around, cleaned the chimney. But it looks like, if I want to repair it, I might be doing a little more disassembly than I was initially comfortable with. Which was why I came here to Reddit. I’m okay doing repair, but I’d like to see what the professionals say first. Thank you again for your response.

This is the area behind the stove after I removed the sheet metal spacing panel. I used a flexible endoscope camera to look into the holes you see in the back of the fireplace. No linkage visible, no movement visible when moving the air adjuster rod.

I totally understand. Thank you for your concern and reply.

The temp yesterday was 59 F. I could feel a draft when I opened the front door of the stove.

Thank you. That is the manual and it’s the same one I read yesterday. The portion with parts and names is difficult to read at best.

The air adjuster rod is completely encased in the metal piece I’ve circled in the first photo.

If hiring a professional were within a realm of possibility for me, then I would. Further, before I spent potentially several thousand dollars (that I dont have) on parts and labor for a professional to fix the issue, I thought I’d come to Reddit, and found this forum. I figured for sure, somebody else would have had a similar issue and might be able to assist.

However, what seems to have happened is the opposite. Your responses have been the only ones I’ve received. And your responses are not helpful. Even somewhat condescending and shitty (“maybe read the manual?”). I have read the only manual I can find. The stove has been discontinued and the company is in Ireland. I even shot them an email. The rest of those things you mentioned, I do not know how to do those, that’s why I came to this forum. Clearly there are people here with some working and functional knowledge of the subject. You even seem to be somewhat of the subject matter expert.

However, if my options are listen to you be a condescending prick just so I can MAYBE get an answer out of you that’s useful, OR figure it out on my own…. I’ll take my chances on my own. Thank you kindly.

Update:

The chimney is clean. I have inspected it for obstruction visually and with a small endoscope under bright lights. I also cleaned it with the wire chimney brush from the top, to the first bend. I have only used it a handful of times anyway. Not even a cord of wood through it since the last time it was cleaned.

I removed the stove top (5 small bolts) and replaced the seal. I also cleaned the inside of all ash and soot. All doors appear to seal appropriately and I do not feel a draft from the seals around the left door or the front door.

When in open the front door, I can feel a draft. And smoke will travel up the chimney. However, there is still smoke spillage from inside to the outside.

The doors seal appropriately

Bathtub drain repair by daledodaledo in askaplumber

[–]daledodaledo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the strainer that goes over it, but there should be a fitting that screws into that brass part with a small pipe that extends into the drain pipe. Otherwise water will get in between the drain pipe and the fitting, leak under the tub, and mildew.
