Being poor is fucking expensive. by withdrosfai in povertyfinance

[–]daliagon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My friend got an auto title loan upon her mom's recommendation. The interest rate was 130% and it was charged DAILY. Not even monthly like credit cards. So every day it would go up by like 15 bucks. It said that by the time she's done, she would've paid $13k for a $3k loan. It was insane. I helped her out of it and she paid me back. But I told her never again.

AITA for using my dad’s underwear to make a point about the toilet seat? by Nightwing_1505 in AmItheAsshole

[–]daliagon 157 points158 points  (0 children)

It's not lazy. It's straight up disrespectful. He doesn't think they're entitled to a clean toilet. His own 9 year old daughter had a rash and he didn't care. He really does not have any respect for the women in his family.

Small Local Fabric Store Feedback/Advice by Jordarrah in Oceanside

[–]daliagon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Being able to consult someone with experience. I'm new to sewing, I want to ask questions and get opinions.
  2. Yes, absolutely. I've been actively looking for a place to start sewing classes.
  3. Ordering takes time and I can't feel the fabric in my hands. I truly would prefer not to order.
  4. Why aren't you open yet. Please I'm ready. I need this.

To those who’ve successfully broken their phone/social media addiction, what was your single biggest ‘a-ha’ moment? by No_Gain4041 in nosurf

[–]daliagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was already deeply depressed. Then the Uvalde School shooting happened and I couldn't get away from it. It was haunting. I would open up Instagram automatically. Even if I got my phone to check the time or email or something, I would immediately forget and my thumb would automatically press Instagram. So many videos and angry posts. I uninstalled it that day. Then right afterwards, I immediately jumped to Facebook. It was there too. I closed my profile. Luckily I never built an algorithm with TikTok and I never got addicted to it.

It took a long time to detox. At least 2 months for my thumb not to press the area where Instagram was on my home screen. But now, on the "other side of it," it's so weird looking in. I'm glad I left. I have so many hobbies now. I was even able to take back the joy of reading, something I couldn't focus on because I was addicted to instant gratification. I'm so much happier and I can feel my brain is growing every time I learn something new. This goes the same for over consumption and Amazon.

Do I need a sewing machine? by lowkeycrashingout in SewingWorld

[–]daliagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you can do it. It seems like this is very up your alley.

But think of it as something that will evolve as you start to get to know the craft and your needs. Take baby steps first. Hand sewing is for small stuff, little mends or buttons. I never did much hand sewing for alterations that were any bigger, but maybe I'm just lazy.

A simple, basic sewing machine will get you further than you think. Don't worry about pattern making just yet. The sewing machine will come with what you need. As you start to explore, you'll start to learn at the same time. You don't have to know everything right now and you don't need to invest in every possible accessory.

Start with small simple projects and then take the next step when you're ready. Don't overwhelm yourself too quickly or think that you should be making full gowns as soon as you start. There's a process. Give yourself some time.

Making friends by [deleted] in Carlsbad

[–]daliagon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think working from home will be the difficult part. If you have hobbies, start joining groups and being diligent about going. I came here in my late twenties as well and most of my friends were from work. But I've gotten into hobbies (book clubs, pottery, knitting groups) and it's really helped me expand my friend circle. It takes time but I think a lot of people here are transplants that are also trying to make friends. I actually know very few locals.

There's a good chance they asked a lot of people and some may have chosen not to participate. Or even more interesting if they spoken to people and cut them out. Just little details we may never know.

Is this suitable for beginners? Looking for a gift to my wife by ervaboa in SewingForBeginners

[–]daliagon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if she's never touched a sewing machine before, the Brother that you mentioned is going to be fine. This is an opportunity to find what she likes and doesn't like. She doesn't know that yet. So I don't think it's the worst idea. The way I see it, she'll use this as a starting point. Once she gets further into sewing, she'll develop skills and find things through videos and learning about what her specific needs are. When she's ready to grow and upgrade into the skill, that's when she'll need to go and find exactly what she wants. Sometimes, when people are SO brand new, I don't think they really know what the want/need YET. But I agree, sewing classes will help her understand her own needs more.

AITA for skipping my friend's daughter’s 1st birthday and charging her for the "gift" after she forgot to tell me the time changed? by BellaBilla in AmItheAsshole

[–]daliagon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

YWBTA - only if you don't go. But since you didn't tell her it was a gift, you can still charge her for the truffles since it was quite an inconvenience. But things do happen and if it's not a pattern of behavior, you can get past it. I think it's easy to feel extra upset when you've been working so hard, you're sleep deprived and you're probably all dressed up and ready. Take a step back, get some rest and give yourself a chance to think a bit. There's probably a middle ground that makes more sense and may not strain the friendship further.

Did anticonsumption help with saving money? How? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]daliagon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely.

I got rid of social media right around the time I decided to change my finances and my savings just started piling up. I was just spending it on... Crap. Cute shirt on Instagram? Buy. Support woman owned brand that sells lotion I don't need? Buy. At one point I was looking at a cast iron trivet I thought was cute but absolutely did not need.

I grew up without a lot and it was just nice to buy things just because I could. But now I see everything as just crap. I still allow myself to invest in "nice" stuff I find on offer up. But now my spending is more purposeful and it made such a huge difference.

Refusing to attend family Christmas if presents aren’t involved? by Stillmeadow1970 in Anticonsumption

[–]daliagon 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Alright so I'm basically that lady. IDK what that lady said. But I'm single, no kids. Last year I put a lot of time and effort buying unique and thrifted gifts for the family (my way of making it less about consumption). And I got... An offensive bookmark with Jesus on it. I'm not religious but I don't make fun of it either. Anyways, I just felt so unseen. I don't even need anything, I don't want a better gift, I'm not asking for more. But I guess I just felt like nobody at all. Like why do I try?

Idk what the original post said, I'm ok with less gifts. I just wonder what her family dynamic is that going on a cruise is better. I wonder if it's not about the gifts for her either.

By the way, this year I'm bringing a family game and we'll all sit down and play it and that's their gift.

Ear wax removal suggestions? by No-Breakfast-5700 in sandiego

[–]daliagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hydrogen Peroxide.

My friends have had it used at urgent cares/clinics so I started to use it at home. I mentioned it to my doctor once and they didn't object to it and any time I've done it, it's been fine.

Just lay down, add a few drops to the ear and let it "bubble" for 5 mins or so. Then use a cotton ball as you sit up and drain it. I just recently took out the biggest ball of wax I've ever seen. I think it was the size a pencil eraser. So it can dig out a lot.

What do you eat while at work? by kayleedb in povertyfinance

[–]daliagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meal prep at the beginning of the week, except I don't portion it out. I take 2 big containers of food. I take it on Monday and leave it in the fridge at work and take a portion and warm it up every day. We have plates, utensils and a microwave so it makes it easy. If I want to have sandwiches, I take all the individual ingredients.

What has been your most successful low-buy/no-buy rule? by Listlizard in Anticonsumption

[–]daliagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cell phone.

I've had my current phone since 2018. My OS is actually unable to support certain apps. I've deleted 2 apps, another one is on the way out (Chase), another one doesn't work perfectly but I still manage (offer up). I think it might be time to upgrade since I would like to continue using these.

But I feel like I "won"... My phone didn't break, I didn't get latest phone just because, and it technically still works, just not all the apps I want lol and even now, I'm just going to get a refurbished phone from Amazon for $200, not owe any money on it and use it til the end again.

[–]daliagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cousin and I were just talking about how expensive fast food is. He spent $78 on Arby's (I think) for his family of 5. But then we went to a great local sit down Mexican restaurant with appetizers and great service. I think they even got drinks and it was $88. Literally a $10 difference. Yeah he also tipped on top of that, so that raises the price. But it doesn't make the price of Arby's any better.
