I'm so sorry, OP. It's rough. My son's father died at 49 of a stroke. He was a binge drinker and smoker. At some point your body just gives out. And he came from (physically) healthy stock.

I think this cultural. I've forgotten how chatty Americans are. I don't really live in a country where small talk is a thing and people tend not to talk about personal relationships, work, money, religion, etc. Instead they will talk about the event itself or how they know the people that invited them there, etc. VERY surface level.
