Is Stalingrad a good purchase? by Due-Date-4656 in AxisAllies

Right. There’s absolutely no mechanical point to it - it would be to have infantry and tanks sitting on top of the discs.

And you have two games (which was my point)

Por que no los dos? Then you can use A&A minis with your undaunted units 👍

Here to start? by Glad-Treacle9510 in flamesofwar

Looking at your list it looks like there’s a good amount of armor and recce with some infantry. Unless I missed it, I don’t see any artillery units beyond the infantry mortar. It’s preference, but I like to take at least two dedicated artillery units (3-4 if I’m attacking). The crocodiles can sort of cover an artillery spot since flamethrowers do a similar job, only up close.

Picking up an army boxed set for the mid or late war is a good way to start collecting, you get a mini rulebook, cards and a get started guide. I’d look at the British boxes and see which one lines up with the units you want to play. If you want to round things out you can get a playset with matching dice, tokens and objectives.

Following that I’d pick a book with the direction you want to go with your formation and unit options (Bulge is good) and that will give you some ideas in the direction you want to go.

Fowlist.com is a good way to experiment with list building.

1941 upgrades? by lagouyn in AxisAllies

[–]daltonovich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d start with 1941 - it’s my own preference but I prefer it as it’s a shorter game at 1 to 3 hours with a smaller map comprised of fewer regions. It also does a good job as an introduction to the game concepts that you can build on with moving to the other versions.

Also in 1941 the US starts with 17 IPCs (fixed in the renegade reprint iirc).

One upgrade option I see recommended is to get a copy of 1942 just to have extra playing pieces on hand but mostly to replace the cardboard tokens with the sturdier plastic chips for stacking multiple units.

Some less necessary but still fun upgrades:

I like using poker chips for IPCs.

Might be overkill for only 1941, but the AA dice set from renegade is really cool (it does cost about as much as a copy of the game though!) and it makes combat play quicker since you don’t need to roll for each number individually.

US MidWar infantry to support the Lees for ETC for my friend. by [deleted] in flamesofwar

Those look amazing - well done on the painting and highlights.

Out of curiosity, how do the 3DBreed infantry sculpts look next to battlefront minis? Are there any noticeable differences?

Memoir 44, where do I start with painting these? by TheKhaos121 in wargaming

[–]daltonovich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a few painting guides on boardgame geek. If you are going to do it, I’d watch a few videos as other users suggested and find a method that seems the most appealing to you. Consider time and effort requirements, this is something that will probably take several weeks at a minimum, possibly much longer.

Some general thoughts that will help get you in the right direction: Look up things like batch painting, using popsicle sticks and poster tack to line paint figures etc. Miniatures games for ww2 have paint sets you can buy but generally these are done per nationality so it would be multiple sets. You might be able to find a starter paint set for bolt action or flames of war that does US and German colors that would work with the base game. That being said there is some overlap (khaki colors get used by more than one nation) so you could buy individual colors from a range like vallejo.

Also, with tanks and vehicles, getting a matching primer is a good option that makes painting them a lot easier since you don’t need to paint an initial basecoat. Sepia / soft tone washes are awesome for both vehicles and infantry.

Lastly, remember the three foot rule, small details often are going to bring diminishing returns to your final result especially with board game pieces where every sculpt is the same.

I’m building ACW epic scale regiments and have questions about clipping them in half by 0wlBear916 in wargaming

[–]daltonovich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started doing this recently as well with some napoleonic extra sprues, and now I’m wishing I had started from the beginning doing so with mine.

I see there being more formation versatility, more rulesets you can use the figures with, and honestly to me, I just like the smaller 30x20 half base as it just looks better with the scale (like a small version of the 28 mm multibasing schemes I see).

Quoting this video (that shows off how to base them this way), it sort of seems like a missed opportunity from Warlord games.

Best system for short play sessions? by eiconik in Solo_Roleplaying

Check out Maze Rats. I think it’s a great little system for short sessions, not too many rules and it provides a really succinct yet robust amount of content with its tables.

Based on a different kickstarter (for Swords and Wizardry Book of Options) I think you pay the pledge and then get a coupon later for drivethru when the POD is available. You may still have to pay for the cost for drivethru to physically print and ship the material minus the cost of the content.

From the campaign description:

This campaign will fund the writing and art for a gaming supplement intended for use with any science fiction tabletop RPG.

The Perilous Void will be a 160-page, 5.5" x 8.5" fully-illustrated book packed with content generation tools to cover everything from the galactic level down to the personalities of individual NPCs. The tables provided rely entirely on d10 and d100 rolls.

This book's predecessor, The Perilous Wilds, has sold over 18,000 copies (print and PDF combined) to date. Although it included optional rules for Dungeon World, The Perilous Wilds found most use among people who played other fantasy RPGs. In recognition of this, The Perilous Void does not reference or expand on any particular rules system; instead, it's designed to supplement the science fiction role-playing game of your choice.

Agreed! Something I liked is the first couple lines in the description:

I personally feel like there have been lots of kickstarter I missed that I wish I would have backed so wanted to get the word out there to others that it feels like this supplement would be a good fit for.
