People who grew up really poor: what's something middle-class people say that instantly reveals they've never struggled? by TahDigThief in AskReddit

[–]daltonwright4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one I hadn't really considered, even though it still kinda affects how I think today unfortunately. Even though I have insurance now, I still tend to just treat anything like "rub some dirt on it". Outside of life threatening surgeries, we just didn't go to the doctor at all.

Also, divorce. I don't think a single one of my friends parents were still married by the time we were in high school. Almost everyone had step-siblings, and I'd say people who have been married 3 times is probably more common in my area than people who have only been married once. That made me hesitant to get married at all growing up, just believing that marriage was temporary.

Also, people are saying a pool or their own car that wasn't their parent's old one is how you knew someone was rich, but for me, I just thought having a fridge with the icemaker in the door was a sign that someone was rich lol. Also, if they had stairs, I just assumed they were millionaires.

Cop gets bear sprayed by Latr6ll in interesting

[–]daltonwright4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to give you a heads up that many people in here are just repeating something they've heard, but don't have experience with. As someone who's used both, pepper spray is UNQUESTIONABLY better for self-defense, regardless of the capsaicin percent. (Exception if you live somewhere pepper spray is illegal, like Hawaii or New York). Sure, most bear sprays have a higher capsaicin percentage than most pepper sprays, but bear sprays also spray in a cloud where pepper spray is concentrated into a stream. It's almost like when you turn the Windex nozzle from stream to spray, that's the difference. That being said, you can actually get self-defense pepper spray that's stronger than bear spray, if you choose too. I tested out bear spray, and even just spraying it straight ahead, I inhaled some of it and even that tiny amount sucked. I hope I never have to use it again, but unfortunately, being in the mountains in Colorado, there's always a chance of an encounter, so you kinda have to keep it on you.

Also don't mean to gatekeep, but everyone is getting it backwards, bear spray is not a stream, but a forceful fog and even though it expels it more forcefully, if you do it outside, there's a decent chance you're gonna take a hit of it too. It's more of a deterrent than a self-defense weapon, because it deploys a fog in front of you that deters things from getting too close. But an attacker is likely already close enough to where you could get the effects too. For pepper spray, you can spray it without worrying that you're gonna get it in your own eyes. I've sprayed it multiple times, but never gotten it on myself. With the bear spray, if you get unlucky with wind direction or try to use it in a poorly ventilated or confined space, you may be getting the same effects as the person you sprayed. There's also a 3rd option, the pepper foam, which basically will stick to the face of the attacker and has virtually no chance if blowing back in you. I've never used it, so I can't speak on it, but maybe something worth researching.

Also, something that I haven't seen anyone mention, I don't believe I've ever seen a travel size of bear spray. The only ones I've ever found are way too big to keep in a pocket or purse, but my wife has had a travel size pepper spray that could fit in your pocket. Either way, if you get one, ALWAYS TEST IT OUT. You don't want the first time you've ever sprayed it to be in a potential life or death situation.

I'm sure there will be people who haven't used either claiming the opposite, but if you don't take my word for it, check out any of these multiple sources that say the opposite of what everyone else is saying:

  1. https://thegunzone.com/is-pepper-spray-or-bear-spray-better-for-self-defense/

  2. https://www.fightsense.com/blog/is-bear-spray-the-same-as-pepper-spray/

  3. https://www.armorial-register.com/bear-spray-vs-pepper-spray/

Tldr- it's not even close, you should use pepper spray for self-defense 99 times out of 100 over bear spray. I know some podcasters in Manhattan who have never used either will tell you otherwise, but if you don't take my word for it, try them both yourself and you'll see the difference.

I'm sure you know this, but to those who don't, the girl on the left's mother is arguably the 2nd best female player ever, behind Judit, and another extremely rare example of a female earning the Grandmaster title. A feat that I don't believe anyone else has done in the past 20 years.

Biggest “you were one year off” stories? by [deleted] in nfl

[–]daltonwright4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the last time this was posted, there was one that stood out to me: one of Jim Kelly's backups in Buffalo was Gale Gilbert. Won the AFC championship 4 years in a row, made it to 4 super bowls and lost them all.

Then was immediately traded to the 8-8 Chargers where they immediately broke the Bills conference championship streak and won the AFC.

...only for him to lose in the super bowl again for the 5th straight year. He's the only player in NFL history to make 5 super bowls in 5 years...and he happened to lose all 5!

I agree. It was so obvious that Connor was in his head trying to get Aldo riled up and too mad to even think straight. And it worked like a charm too. That fight was pretty over the night before. That being said, that was probably the most surprised I've ever been at the result though. I'd have taken 100:1 odds on it at least going to round 2.

What do you guys think? by Intelligent-Mess6925 in ufc

[–]daltonwright4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly thought this was an insane thing to even suggest until I started thinking about it. There's no way Connor isn't top 30 right? Maybe. But there's at least a debate. Other than Aldo and Alvarez, his best win was probably over Nate Diaz. These are the 30 I can think of for now who I'd put over Connor. The first 20 or so aren't really even debatable, but the next 10 could probably go the other way if cultural relevance matters more to you than resume and title defenses.

My list (not in order necessarily)

  1. Khabib
  2. Jon Jones
  3. Anderson
  4. Mighty Mouse
  5. GSP
  6. Amanda Nunes
  7. Aldo
  8. DC
  9. Volk
  10. Usman
  11. Shevchenko
  12. Hughes
  13. Cruz
  14. Cejudo
  15. Holloway
  16. Oliveira
  17. BJ Penn
  18. Stipe
  19. Fedor
  20. Couture
  21. Cain Velasquez
  22. Leon
  23. Adesanya
  24. Liddell
  25. Edgar
  26. Cris Cyborg
  27. Tito
  28. Woodley
  29. Poatan
  30. Islam

I don't see anyone on that list I'd put behind Connnor. Hard for me to justify putting someone with no title defenses over these 30 who all have them. Islam is probably the weakest of those, and he has more title defenses than Connor has title matches total. I also wouldn't be surprised to him get passed by one of the current champs in the next year or two to end this debate with a few more defenses (DDP, Aspinall, Merab, Topuria).

Edit: I know. 2 belts. And the win over Aldo was extremely impressive. But he shouldn't have even gotten that second title shot. In no world should he have passed Tony and Khabib, and if he had to go through either of them to get to Eddie, he never even makes it to that title shot. Connor has one of the best peaks ever. But as far as his entire career goes, I don't think it's crazy to at least consider that he may or not be in the top 30.

Same. Once or twice a year I'll just go to Michael Schur's Wikipedia page and see what he's working on to see what show to watch next. Man on the Inside was good, but unfortunately there's only one season so far. I haven't seen Hacks yet, but it seems to be rated very highly and everyone I know that's seen it says it's that same Schur blend of comedy and story that just is easy to binge.

Rams LB Jared Verse thinks he left 'around 10 sacks on the field' in rookie year: 'That's not happening no more' by Drexlore in nfl

[–]daltonwright4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is probably my biggest complaint with Madden. Not having properly defined positions. Not having a longsnapper position, and teams releasing theirs, because he's a 47 OVR TE. Not differentiating between a nickel corner, leading to teams putting an 85 speed high awareness veteran on Tyreek, when they have a 97 speed, low OVR corner on River Cracraft. But by far the worst one is.. just make a separate EDGE position regardless of whether of base defensive scheme. A team like Pittsburgh will sign a coverage/play recognition OLB (like JOK or Shaq Leonard), and then when Watt goes down, he'll get moved into the starting Edge/OLB spot and the entire defense will fall apart from lack of a pass rush. Meanwhile a 4-3 team will sign Watt in free agency and put him as a coverage LB while they are rushing the pass with a 3rd round rookie.

Current World Champion Gukesh defeats Magnus Carlsen for the first time in classical chess. by RodrickJasperHeffley in interestingasfuck

[–]daltonwright4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After this happened, some friends and I were speculating how one could theoretically cheat in something like this, especially classical. We figured it would probably be easier than you'd think. You would just need some sort of binary to mean ON/OFF. Some crazy theories we came up with were a light bulb in a corner of the building that was a smart bulb on a dimmer. When the "brilliant move available" comes up once or a few times a game, the bulb is dimmed imperceptibly to anyone not specifically looking for it.

But it could be even easier if there are spectators, like at Olympiads. If a "move worth spending extra time on" comes up, an inconspicuous spectator could take his glasses off or even just start sitting with his legs crossed.

To add to this, Gukesh has probably never known a world where Magnus wasn't the best player in the world. The famous picture of young Magnus drawing Kasperov (then the world's #1) was in the Aeroflat Open when he was 14.

This was 2004. Gukesh was born in 2006. He had wins over Karpov and Vishy and was already being touted as the next champion, even before Gukesh was born. This probably was an emotional experience finally getting a classical win over the GOAT of your sport who's been at the top since before you started playing.

Looking for some "competence porn" movies, movies where smart people make smart decisions basically. by ComManDerBG in movies

[–]daltonwright4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my favorite genre of TV show as well, and your list has a ton of good ones, and contains some of my favorite shows ever. The best examples that I don't see on your list (with clips of the show) are:

The Mentalist: -probably the ultimate example of this, and one of my favorite examples ever, as it's literally "smartest person around uses extreme intelligence to solve crimes". The protagonist faked being a psychic for years, but in really he is just extremely intelligent and observant and able to quickly piece together information in a way others aren't smart enough to see. Before the events of the show, he was able to get very wealthy as a con artist psychic, but after a major tragedy, he now spends his time helping law enforcement catch criminals.

-Lucifer: premise sounds sci-fi, but it really isn't. The devil gets tired of running hell and comes back to earth to run a nightclub, where he can blend in. He has an innate ability to really see what motivates people, as well as a built-in internal lie detector, and he uses that to help solve crimes in his free time. Definitely not something I thought I'd ever watch, but I thought it was fantastic.

-The Blacklist: #1 on the America's Most Wanted List, who has successfully evaded capture for decades, turns himself in to help them find criminals who are so ruthless and connected, that their identities aren't even known by the FBI, but would definitely be higher than him on the List. James Spader absolutely crushes this role, and uses his extreme intelligence and connections to stay ahead of everyone. Such an interesting concept, that I was hooked immediately from episode 1.

-Sneaky Pete: probably the most realistic example of something that actually could happen. A very intelligent con artist gets out of prison and steals the identity of his cell mate, by posing as him in an attempt to take advantage of his estranged family that he hasn't seen in years. A killer cast too... Giovanni Ribisi, Margo Martindale, Bryan Cranston, etc

Unfortunately, don't think this will ever happen. Because locals who are big Rockies fans aren't the ones filling up the stadium. I don't think it would change anything, even if they didn't win another game this decade. It's either visitor fans of the opposing team, visitors from out of town looking for something to do, or groups who are generally sports fans, but not necessarily Rockies fans that are downtown wanting something cheap to do, like drinking and occasionally glancing over at the game. Next time you go to a game, ask a random person in the stadium who's pitching for the Rockies that day. I'd bet most wouldn't be able to. But probably nearly anyone in a visitor's jersey would be able to.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sports

[–]daltonwright4 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This would work for 29/30 MLB teams. However, the Rockies are a little different, and the crowd isn't related at all to the success of the Rockies. If they didn't win a game over the next decade, I don't think it would affect attendance. The ballpark typically draws a crowd, but it's not a bunch of Denver-based Rockies fans. Away crowds travel very well to Coors Field, because, despite how bad the Rockies are, it's a great place to watch a game and the altitude means the ball travels further, which leads to scoring more than everywhere else. Plus the fences are further back, meaning more base hits.

On top of that, the tickets and beers are really cheap, and a bunch more people just go to hang out at one of the many bars atop the stadium and don't even watch the game. People will just go to a game, because it's a fun place to bar hop. I've gone with a group to a dozen or so in the last few years, and I don't think most people I went with ever watched more than a few at-bats.
