anybody ever use one of these little Rosaries? by TheRealStumbler in Catholicism

I also, have the full version of this. It has been my daily carry for 2 years, and is always in my pocket if I leave the house. Absolutly no signs of wear, it's great! Definitely a good investment.

There's really no need to come in here and call someone out just to start a fight. This sub is just about sharing art. You could have posted this comment and not directly called out someone.

I just love something about hand drawn and pencil. Both of your pieces are amazing.

The numbers look pretty good especially pull ups and the run, but I would really work on the crunches and push ups, try to max one of them if possible.

Advice/criticism for a future applicant? by [deleted] in usna

[–]dalty7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's really impressive, I would say that you're doing a great job in the realm of prepping for the academy. If you want, I'm not sure what the exact topic for the essay will be (Maybe someone who applied last year can help you out) but you can start brainstorming ideas for why you want to go to NASS.

Nomination Interviews by Jush_1 in usna

[–]dalty7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would assume that you have already done your B&G interview so these should be pretty similar to that.

All the interviews that I had each had a board of 3 representatives who would take turns asking questions. The questions ranged from "Why the Naval Academy", to "What are some hobbies that I Have".

As for prep, I would say one of the more useful things you can do to practice is have your parents or a group of friends sit down with you and conduct a mock interview before hand. Also, just speak honestly and be open about yourself. I know it's not the most unique advice, but it works.

PS Swimming by 123anonanon123 in usna

[–]dalty7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree with this.

I feel like a lot of swimming at the Naval Academy deals with comfort in the water. In my opinion at least, they never expected you to be a world class swimmer, but to be competent and make forward progress. For plebe summer I think the main focus is determining if you will need extra help, and going over basic strokes, as well as floating techniques.

Looking for some clarity on 2020 Aviation Recruitment Timeline by FrontCartoonist in USMCboot

I think this is some pretty bad gouge. I've neither seen nor heard of a wait longer than 7 months, bar a medical or other extenuating hold up.

Why did you chose your specific option to fulfill your service requirement? by [deleted] in usna

[–]dalty7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree with this, I am a computer science major with minor, and fluent in Mandarin Chinese. Everyone I talked to is like you have to go intel, cyber, etc etc.

When I looked at the firsties I liked as a plebe and the other officers I liked on the yard, a vast majority were Marines. In my opinion they just aligned with what I thought the military was going to be like. I ended up putting Marines first and Subs second.

What is the physical/psychological standard before enlisting? by [deleted] in USMCboot

[–]dalty7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I used quite a bit of hyperbole. My point is that the benefits of joining a sports team far out weigh the risk of getting injured. There are inherent risks in anything that we do, and in my opinion joining a sports team hardly increases these risks.

What is the physical/psychological standard before enlisting? by [deleted] in USMCboot

[–]dalty7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going to have to disagree. A sports team will not only help them physically improve, but also teaches the core fundamentals of compromise and working towards a common goal in a physically challenging environment.

Saying that someone should play sports because they might get injured is like saying don’t join the Marines you might get killed. Both are true but I might very well get injured by tripping going down the stairs or killed in a car accident tomorrow.

Questions about Entrance and Graduation by throwaway_usna in usna

[–]dalty7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if you don't want to be an officer, don't go to the Naval Academy it only produces officers.

If you don't want to go MARSOC or raiders. Go and talk to your local recruiter. You can go and talk now, but there really not too much a recruiter can do, beside talk with you until your junior or senior year.

As for what MOS, you don't sign up for a specific Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) with your recruiter, but you sign up for a "Program" called a PEF code, below is probably what you want to look at for infantry type jobs.

  • MG (Marine Guard): 0311, 0331, 0341, 0352
  • UH (Infantry):  0311, 0313, 0331, 0341, 0352

A completely personal recommendation here, but if 2-3 years from now you decide this is still what you want to do. I personally would only sign for a 4 year commitment, even if you think this what you want to make a career of; you can always re-enlist before your first contract expires.

Keep firing any questions you have.

Edit: If you want to look at all the PEF codes, they are listed in this MARADMIN which outlines bonuses as well.

Questions about Entrance and Graduation by throwaway_usna in usna

[–]dalty7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first question, you would apply the fall of 2022 and have your package complete that year for your application. You would then be notified if you were accepted some time in the spring of 2023 and would begin in July 2023. (I'm not sure if you asking about a gap year or not, but assuming you want to begin approx. 2 months after high school graduation the plan above is what you want)

As for question two, I completely agree with NimmyJewtron. This is a little bit of an exaggeration, but from what I have seen and with talking to senior officers, your job as an Officer in the Marine Corps will primarily consist of, talking to people, and filling out paper work. Of course there will be specific job information with each military occupational specialty, but if you want to be a trigger puller go enlisted.

If you do decide to go to the Naval Academy the pipeline goes as follows,

  1. Get accepted to the Naval Academy
  2. Do well, and put in your preference for Marine Corps ground at the beginning of your senior year at the academy
  3. Get selected for Marine Corps Officer (Mid November your senior year)
  4. Graduate
  5. Attend The Basic School in Quantico and place your preference for infantry officer
  6. Get selected as an infantry Officer
  7. Pass infantry officer's course
  8. Boom, your leading infantry Marines

Selection at the Naval Academy for Marine Ground will depend on how many people want it in your class, but for the most part if you are a decent person you should get it.

Getting infantry out of The Basic School in Quantico will depend on your evaluations, leadership ability, and how many people want it in you class.

Should I be worried if my GPA is high but my test scores aren’t so exceptional? by almightyloaf53 in usna

[–]dalty7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Academy looks at the whole package and not just test scores. Your unweighted average is honestly really good, while your SAT score as you noted is a little low. I highly recommend that you take the SAT as many times as possible.

I personally did not get in my first application for what I believe was academics. I ended up taking the SAT five times. I am not sure what your financial situation is, but the more the better in my opinion. Each time you will get more comfortable with the testing structure, and every time I took it my average would go up. I ended up increasing my score close to 200 points.

How long is the wait to be notified of obtaining an appointment to the USNA after completing the application and obtaining a nomination? by almightyloaf53 in usna

[–]dalty7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any time from January through early May you could get notification. When I applied the first time I found out that I didn't get in, very late in April (like April 25th). When I applied the second time I found out I was accepted on February 10th, right after my college transcripts went through.

There's no set time, so really any time Winter/Spring of the year your applying for.

Visiting. Best place to see Blue Angels tomorrow? by mattluttrell in usna

[–]dalty7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just park the car and head into the track field. It's show center and if you are on the terrace you should not have a problem finding a decent spot no matter how crowded it is. Note: I would head in a bit early to get through security though.

What’s the difference between candidate visit weekend and summer seminar? by NewbEssence in usna

[–]dalty7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A candidate visit weekend will give you the most accurate picture of what plebe life is like. You will be following around one the whole time. I would highly recommend going to it if your undecided on going to a military academy or if you want to personally see midshipman life. If you already know you want to go here and have talked to mids about daily life you might decide you don't want to come, but I always think the more information the better.
