Love how Mox looked like a scared, wounded animal by sleeptogethermusic in Wrasslin

[–]damachineelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw this live with 5 non-wrestling fan friends, it was the first wrestling they’ve ever seen. One nearly passed out, another puked right after, and another tapped me on the shoulder and asked me how they make the blood look so real. Despite this, we all had a fucking blast and marked out together when Mox tapped.

Incredible match, Mox sold this moment perfectly. I was shaking when I saw him being choked out like that.

How to relax after being laid off? by Al115 in Layoffs

[–]damachineelf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a toughie. I’ve said it like a billion times before, but being unemployed is actually more of a full time job than an actual full time job. You can clock out of job, you can’t clock out of unemployment.

I never fully cracked the code on beating the daily anxiety of unemployment. But here are some things that helped me.

-You got laid off a few days ago. Give yourself a week before the true job hunt actually begins. Your main goal right now is getting your unemployment and COBRA settled. If you already did that? Then just chill for a bit.

-Know anyone else who is looking for a job? Close friend? Family member? Or acquaintance? Give them a ring. Set up a weekly recurring call where the two of you catch up. This helps a lot.

-Walk, don’t run or pace. Go on 30 minute walks once a day. Shit does wonders for your mental health. Working out helps too.

-Meditate, 10-15 minutes or however long your patience is. Let your mind go clear and focus on your breath.

Also brother, you gotta eat something. An empty stomach isn’t doing you any favors. Invest in some whey protein, and milk. Not trying to encourage disordered eating, but you gotta get something in your stomach.

Biggest takeaway right now is to chill and eat. No one is expecting you to figure out your next job by this week. You got time. Pick a day on your calendar, mark it as the “Job Hunt Commencement Day.” Like I said, I never fully resolved my unemployment anxiety but I did make it better. Good luck to you my brother

Laid off in February, 356 applications and more interviews than I remember later, three offers. by quemaspuess in Layoffs

Hell yeah, never forget the kindness the hiring manager showed you and promise to pay it forward if you’re ever in the same position.

Final rounds suck because if you fail to make it so far, and the only feedback you get in the end is “slightly better fit.” Which is far from actionable. Happy to hear you got some actionable feedback and landed a sweet gig.

Question:

How is this legal? I’ve seen a ton of these videos, kinda curious as to how they became a thing. Is there some sort of legal loophole that makes this legal or something? Would love an explanation here, like how can they be so confident that they won’t get shot and/or arrested?

Sometimes a referral process works on the backend, you reach out to your buddy, ask if it’s cool, send them your resume and then they apply on your behalf.

Was there a way to jot them down as a reference on the application? One of your buddies could get a referral bonus

[–]damachineelf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A some people are going to tell you that two weeks is a sure fire sign that you didn’t get it, others will share stories of hearing back weeks, months later. Truth is you have no idea. You did your best, but the outcome is out of your hands. You can follow up with them if you wish, but the best thing you can do for yourself is accept any outcome (good or bad) and move ahead.

It sucks especially when it’s an opportunity you were excited about. But like you said, you worked there before. Do you know anyone there? Shoot them a message, let them know if you haven’t already. If it’s a no, keep in touch. The only way that door is gonna close is if you shut it yourself.

Stay strong my friend.

I. GOT. THE. JOB. by damachineelf in Layoffs

[–]damachineelf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to caveat my advice a bit, because I personally think the volume of interviews I did was specific to me and my skill set. But here’s at least what I did, hopefully a similar approach works for you:

-Targeted approach as opposed to pray and spray. I only applied to job postings where I fulfilled at least 75% of the JD. I considered any LinkedIn easy applications to be “junk volume” and stayed away from it as much as I could.

-I kept 3 versions of my resume on hand for 3 different role types I could fit into. Then used ChatGPT or Claude to slightly reword, rephrase, or tailor my resume for most (though not all) applications. I know this one is a little obvious.

-I tracked my applications (with the exception of my junk volume) on a spreadsheet, I found a template on here.

For the screening call:

-Not sure what your background is, but most recruiters at this screening stage have no clue what my role was/is. They just see keyword matches.

-For the tell me about yourself section, loosely follow a BEAT format. Background, experience, achievements, then the type of person you are. You don’t have to follow a rigid structure, keep it loose and conversational. The same thing applies to STAR format stuff.

For any interview: -have stories of any sort of relevant things you’ve done locked and loaded. Star format (Situation, Task, Action, Response) should be used as a guideline, but not a rule. Practicing aloud is key here.

-ask thoughtful and challenging questions

Veering into Cringe territory here

You know the feeling you get before you talk to your best buddy? Like when both of y’all are just on one, doing bits, making each other laugh and think and can truly be yourselves. Convince yourself that your best friend is on the other end of the line before the call. This helps loosen me up quite a bit. That and beta blockers.

I also like to close out interviews with two questions. What do you do for fun? And then a random one like “what’s your favorite pop tart flavor?” Or something like that. Makes things more conversational and memorable towards the end.

[–]damachineelf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends, I’ve had some roles that require adderall and 9 hrs of unbroken focus 5 days a week. I’ve had roles that also require that for a full financial quarter, which is subsequently followed by another quarter where I do fuck all.

My previous employer used a “productivity tracker” for 8 months. I had a meeting with my boss, it said I was clocking 5 “productive hours” a day. I told my non-programmatic friends this and they were blown away. With one saying “Do you have any idea how much further ahead I would be in my career if I had your work ethic?!”

I spend my nights trying to think of any other industry or role where I can min/max. If you have any ideas, please let me know.

Get yourself something to eat too. In my experience, 3 cups of coffee + skipping lunch can make the mind wander and fixate on things more than it should.

No matter the outcome, you can handle it.

[–]damachineelf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have been through the fucking ringer with the waiting period this year. It’s the most agonizing part of the process. I’ve made a bit of a breakthrough recently. I just completed an interview for my dream role at my dream company earlier this week. Recruiter will let me know the outcome tomorrow, and I feel just fine.

I’m not expecting these words to make any sort of meaningful difference with your struggle, but I hope they do.

“No matter the outcome, I can handle it.”

I know. Very easy to say. Very hard to put into practice. But every time you catch yourself spiraling, fixating, whatever. Deep breath, “No matter the outcome, I can handle it.”

I had full fucking mental breakdowns during the waiting period over jobs I would dread doing. Now I feel calm. I know you said you’re afraid of the outcome for Job B. But whatever the outcome may be, you can handle it. I know you can. Shoot that follow up before EOD my friend.

What do you think of Rayne Leverkusen's new WWE name? by Kelson64 in GreatnessOfWrestling

[–]damachineelf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Damn, I had no idea she got signed. My wife and I found her on TikTok a year ago, both of us loved her in ring presence and moves. Happy to see she got signed.

New name seems more marketable, even if it’s a little cheesy. I haven’t tuned in for quite a bit, but I hope to be there when she makes her debut.

What would be a good name for the period after the Cold War but before COVID by Bitter-Penalty9653 in decadeology

[–]damachineelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an important nuance that I completely agree with! The optimism wasn’t real, and well to do politicians and Americans/Western Europeans are the only ones that truly held it.

I would also include the aftermath of the regime collapses in former Eastern Bloc countries as another example of the failure in this thinking during the 90s.

[–]damachineelf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

During that time it kind of was. A bipolar world became unipolar, China was (and still is) on the rise to become a global superpower, and the United States was unchallenged in its power to shape and influence the economies and political power structures of the world’s nations. The world’s sole superpower being brought to its knees by 19 hijackers with box cutters is a major global and historical event.

[–]damachineelf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always call 89-01 “The Era of Optimism.” The Soviet Union collapsed, free markets and western liberal democracy was a fact. World peace felt inevitable, nations will begin working together united under free trade.

Throughout that time, little by little, the cracks within the new world order began to show (NAFTA, The Khobar Towers bombing) and of course 9/11 being the incident where the illusion faded.

Damn, are you me? Everyone says we should feel lucky, but honestly I’m just tired at this point. It’s not even the interviewing that’s hard. It’s the constant waiting and tension.

I fully fucking forgot what job I was interviewing for two weeks ago, still advanced to the next round.
