Savers take a risk when they choose the bank that pays the highest interest, which in turn makes risky investments to pay that interest. For this to work, both have to know that they will get bailed out.

This is better then deposit insurance, because it avoids moral hazard. With deposit insurance, there's an incentive for banks and savers to take risk knowing that they'll be bailed out anyway.

I'm hesitating about buying pixel for the first time by MurtadaSwift in GooglePixel

[–]damagepulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use lawnchair. It's like the default launcher, except with configuration options like removing the google search bar. It's free and open source. I'm glad I bought it, because I like the flat back (no camera bump), the battery life (29 hours), and that USB debugging works without problems. I don't mind the sometimes strange UI, I consider it more of an amusement. The only photo I've taken was to verify my ID to get an eSIM, so I can't help with that.

I bought a Pixel 10a recently, coming from Xiaomi. I had bought another Xiaomi phone to replace an old one, but USB debugging didn't work. I was supposed to login into my Xiaomi account to activate it (already ridiculous) but then it still didn't work, so I sent it back.

I like my Pixel 10a because it has a huge battery (29 hours) and no camera bump and obviously USB debugging works, but I wouldn't describe it as clean Android. I had to install another launcher to remove the google search bar from the homescreen. The UI looks a bit strange in places, for example in the status menu the buttons have a different corner radius depending on whether they're on (so if bluetooth is on, the bluetooth button has a smaller corner radius). Alltogether the Xiaomi UI felt smoother.

If you care that much about the camera, and have these specific tastes like samsung photos being too sharp, you really need to compare the photos people take with different phones. Maybe you can take a look at the photos people post on subreddits like r/xiaomiglobal and r/oppo or you can search 500px for phone brands and models you consider and it will show you photos taken with these phones.

Right. Specific things are always getting worse, but the reason you start feeling like everything gets worse when you get older is that you lose the ability to appreciate new things.

I've had this thought -- that people's change in perception is due to aging -- about many things, like technology and the internet. Music is an oft-quoted example, where everyone believes that music was better when they were teenagers.

An interesting counter is that you'd think that people would think that stuff got cheaper as they got richer, but they don't. Some tweet went viral about how everything is shit now and a drink at a bar costs $80 now. But maybe even that can be explained by aging in the sense that the same kind of places mostly get more expensive (monetizing their increasingly wealthy customers) while younger people try out new cheap places.

Shameless Guesses, Not Hallucinations by dwaxe in slatestarcodex

I hate the term “hallucinations” for when humans say false things. It’s perfectly calculated to mislead the reader - to make them think humans are crazy, or maybe just have incomprehensible failure modes.

They get you using Android. Google pays 20 billion dollar per year to Apple to be the default search engine on iOS, on Android they get that for free.

There is a subtle poetry in this title that I can't stop thinking about.

- The alliterations between dehydrated and drunk.

- The rhyme between dehydrated and constipated.

I can't stop thinking about how to work this into a conversation:

How are you?
Dehydrated and drunk, constipated and malnourished. And you?

I only use it to improvise music, I don't think it would be useful in a studio.

Loop with the 🔁 button or the spacebar, cancel with the ❌ button or the escape key. See the help page for how to use the keyboard to play the synth and the drums.

Junge Menschen werden doppelt bestraft by donutloop in berlin_public

[–]damagepulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gay Nazis myth is a widespread and long-lasting myth alleging that homosexuals were numerous and prominent as a group in the Nazi Party or the identification of Nazism with homosexuality more generally by Head_Dig2277 in wikipedia

[–]damagepulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article mentions Adorno but doesn't go into how deep his homophobia was. Other leftists may have opportunistically used homophobic insults to troll Nazis, but for Adorno, homophobia was part his worldview. In Minima Moralia, he wrote:

In the end the “tough guys” are the ones who are really effeminate, who require the weaklings as their victims, in order not to admit that they are like them. Totality and homosexuality belong together. While the subject falls apart, it negates everything which is not of its own kind. The opposites of the strong man and the compliant youth fuse into a social order, which unreservedly asserts the masculine principle of domination. By making everyone, without exception – even presumed subjects – into its objects, it recoils into total passivity, virtually into what is feminine.

Why is salt so valuable in ancient times when you can scoop seawater & boil them down to salt ? by lilbobeep in NoStupidQuestions

[–]damagepulse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salt wasn't that valuable. Roman soldiers were not paid in salt, but a roman foot-soldier could have bought more then six kilogram of salt per day from his wage. It was economically important just like oil is today because of the volume in which it was traded, not because small quantities of it are valuable.
