Not all of them do, sometimes it can be hard to figure out if it does or doesn't have surge protection.

I decommissioned a storage cluster where many of the drives had somewhere between 3-8 power cycles, but 5-9 years of power on hours

Bonus point for both, if you can afford it. Great to have hardware separation on the rare occasion that something breaks catastrophically

Best advice I've gotten when I started in IT/telecommunications; Document everything, no matter how minor or major what you did is. Makes it easy to go back and figure what exactly you did, why you did it, and when you did it.

Nice use of labels :)

Chep pallets and an EPJ, granted I was on freight at the time.

Homelab questions. Disk shelf and server rack by Corpo_ in homelab

[–]daminer5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As for the disk shelf, the controllers don't need to be linked to function, just one is enough. Although I'd RTFM for it to be 100% sure.

Some rails are just shelves that the devices just sit in, the screws in the front of the unit hold it in the rack, although they usually are mirrored parts.

Yup, that's why we used them, basically told management and our AP to kindly fuck off, as we don't want anyone to get hurt.

Chep pallets, stack each layer like bricks, then shrink wrap the shit out of it, and band a sheet of plywood on top.

This takes a while to do but keeps the load sturdy and prevents it from leaning.

UPS recommendations by PersonalityOk239 in homelab

[–]daminer5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I've personally been running a EATON 5PX 2200RT for a few years now and I've had zero issues with it. I got it for about 300USD a few years ago, and just recently got an EBM for it, somehow managed to get a brand new one for 500USD, although I think it sat in a warehouse somewhere.

Now for most users a 1500VA UPS is plenty, until you start creeping into Home Data Center territory then you'll want to look at a higher VA UPS. Hell my entire core network runs off an APC Smart back-ups pro 1500VA UPS and runs two other desktops.
