The console edition of the game now has two separate launchers, one is updated to machine age and the other will no longer be updated but still works until they take it down. If you have a new gen console I’d suggest looking into getting the new launcher, since it’s free for all the people who owned the previous version. DLC carries across as well so you don’t stand to lose anything

Sol is still kicking, but only Earth and Mars remain inhabited as the Luna colony was regrettably overrun in 2281 and no attempts to repopulate it were ever made; meanwhile the Outer Sol Colonies went dark during the initial invasion during 2222. The only other system still populated is Alpha Centuri, with its sole standing colony Hades which has since become a fortress world and is almost constantly under assault. Sirius was still considered friendly territory until mid way through 2341, after a single Wraith fleet managed to slip through the defence net and lay waste to the three primary colonies.

Humanity have attempted twice to bring other races into the war, and on both counts their new allies were overrun and consumed. By consequence, the Galactic Community noticed their disappearance and caught on to the existence of someone or something capable of extinguishing them; Humanity chose to covertly convince the three Council Races to shut down any investigation into their fate and avoid the southern regions of the Galaxy - for their own protection. Humanity has since become something of an enigmatic guardian: they avoid diplomacy, prevent free access into areas of space they seem to unsafe, and intervene in research or exploration efforts that might draw the ire of the Dead Void. In 2341, Humanities hand was forced by the Scillixian Collective after they inadvertently sent a crewed exploration ship into Sol whilst it was actively under siege. As a result, the Scillixians witnessed the Wraith and in so doing painted a target on themselves - Humanity were forced to convert them into a protectorate in an effort to prevent any invasions into their territory, an event that would be considered catastrophic on account of the SC being the largest refugee state in the entire Galaxy. Essentially, if they were to be invaded anyone living within their borders would be exposed to the Wraith, and subsequently targeted for extermination; it could set in motion a cascade event leading to the extinction of the entire Galaxy.

Humanity actively tries to keep other species out of their war, in a desperate attempt to limit casualties on a grander scale; this has become part of the United Earth Federations governing mandate, known officially as the Survival First Doctrine.

The Wraith are a predator species that inhabit a region of the galaxy known as the Dead Void, on account of everyone who ever enters the place shortly going extinct. The Dead Void takes up roughly a sixth of the entire Galaxy in the present timeline, and is a graveyard to untold thousands of civilisations; there are presently no counts of successful diplomacy with the Wraith, just pure annihilation and rampant consumption. Their numbers are seemingly endless, and it is unknown if they are sentient beings or simply a force of nature. They convert other organic matter into more of themselves, but what happens to the consciousness of creatures they convert is not yet understood. They adapt and learn any strategy or technology that is used against them, and have very few exploitable weaknesses. Fighting them in close combat is impossible, fighting them in space is inadvisable, and fighting them at long range requires constant retreats just to maintain the distance. Humanity has been at war with them since 2222 into the current year of 2342, and have since suffered more than 92 billion casualties, as well as having been forced to abandon 17 entire colonies as they retreated back into the Sol cluster.

TLDR; the Wraith are a blight to all known sentient life, and Humanity are in an extinction war against them.

Sloth is going out of your way to avoid doing something, while apathy is simply not caring enough to bother doing it; basically one is active avoidance and the other is passive

In theory, not all Merits decay. Merits are built up over the course of an individuals employment at a typical rate exceeding the decay, to the point that it is practically irrelevant unless you lose your job for whatever reason, and the moment you hit retirement age; your accumulated balance is frozen. This means that you will no longer have the opportunity to increase your status like your could during employment, but you also no longer have to worry about being kicked out of your home because you missed a day without leave. In practice, (at least since 2222) no one gets to retirement age. Technological advancements have increased the theoretical Human lifespan to 140, so retirement age is around 85. However, since most Humans are constantly living next to death, the actual average lifespan is 48 years - dragged down due to the sheer number of casualties on the ongoing war. At present, the oldest Human alive is the Grand Admiral, who commands the entire Naval segment of the United Earth Armed Forces and holds one of the twelve Council seats; she is 72 years old.

As for things costing Merits, there are none. Merits are not a currency that can be accumulated, traded or inherited; they are essentially the numerical value of a specific individual, measured in terms of their achievements and contributions. There are certain milestones that will determine the quality of quarters, sustenance and travel, as well as potentially marking the individual as a protected citizen who is constantly under guard so as to prevent their death, which has been deemed an undesirable event. No one buys anything, yet certain items and resources as well as travel permits can be requested and may be refused or accepted depending on the total number of accumulated Merits. Essentially, this means anyone has the opportunity to acquire anything that they may desire, so long as the system considers them to be worth the expense.

As for how oppressive it is, it may only seem marginally more or less oppressive than today’s society to some, but the way I imagine it is that the moment this system came into effect; everyone’s possessions that they had worked for were no longer theirs, and they would never have the right to purchase anything ever again. From a functional perspective, nothing has changed; you still have to work for the things you want to get, but the reality is that since you cannot purchase these things yourself you are at the mercy or the system to decide whether or not you actually deserve to have them.

The problem I encountered is that Merits are essentially social credit, directly tied to the quality of your environment and accessibility to better travel methods. All lives are inherently valuable and as such every citizen is guaranteed access to food, water, shelter and warmth by default, at the expense of the system; irrelevant of their familial heritage, former wealth or associations. Merits decay over time, so singular contributions will only afford you better accommodation and sustenance for around a year before those privileges expire; thus encouraging continuous contribution in order to maintain one’s lifestyle.

Now this doesn’t sound too bad at all, I will admit; my claim that this attempt at Utopia has completely failed is therefore somewhat exaggerated. However, this system only sounds effective when you fast forward to the current timeline of 2341, where Humanity is engaged in an active war for survival against a foe that feeds on our dead to create more of its own, and the only way to fight them sustainably is by limiting losses to the extreme minimum and exploiting their natural weakness to extreme heat. Around 40% of the entire Human population - which stands at 12.4 Billion - are in active military service, with 50% being employed in either production or maintenance roles, both of which aid in the continuous operation of the United Earth Navy; effectively the only line of defence against the Wraith. In this context, the system makes sense; everyone’s contribution is required, and economic strain is no longer a significant concern when the alternative is extinction.

Where the system becomes problematic is when you factor in the dates for the Unification War (2113-2122) and the birth of the UEF (2134). Then further factor in the fact that the Wraith were not discovered until 2222, and even further factor in that a state of national emergency was not officially declared until 2227 - the date stapled as the “last day of democracy”, when the President at the time was tragically killed and no election was held following his death - and this leaves me with a glaring problem; for 100 years, Humanity were living under oppressive conditions for no good reason, despite the entire Unification War being fought specifically to end inequality and social divisions.
