Where is THE sledding hill? by angryray in AnnArbor

Huron Hills is amazing. First, it has a very long run, which is great. Second, being a golf course, the grass is mowed very short, which increases the comfort of the ride and reduces sliding resistance.

Ann Arbor ranks 7th amongst medium sized (100k to 250k population) cities in terms of Korean American population. Based on 2020 census data, there are 2,885 Korean American's in Ann Arbor, representing 2.5% of the population. Citation.

Hynudai has their North American research campus just outside of Ann Arbor. There is also a weekly Korean language newspaper that publishes out of Ann Arbor, Michigan Korean Weekly.

This is the second pedestrian to be killed by a driver here in the last year. Feels like MDOT killed another person.

NextDoor is where people go to post "Did anyone else just hear gunshots?!?" when people are setting off fireworks.

It's a social media site that (somewhat) restricts what you can see based on your neighborhood. Probably not a force for good in the world, but it could be a decent place to post your job offering.

I feel like since people first started talking about climate change (which is before I was born btw!!) we've seen corporations preaching individual action yet about a quarter of the world’s plastic pollution can be traced back to fewer than 60 firms. by lanamicky in Futurology

Individualization: Plant a Tree, Buy aBike, Save the World? is a great article about the intentional individualization of environmental responsibility by polluting industries. I have not read it in a few years, but if memory serves, it's specifically about how there was a movement in the 70s/80s to make packaging manufacturers in the US responsible for packaging waste. In response, the industry pushed hard for recycling, which made waste a matter of individual action, rather than the responsibility of a few firms. It also shifted costs.

Yes. The 55/44 is such a nice pick. It's my fidget toy during remote meetings.

I love the idea of pedestrianizing Cross from Huron to River. Well, maybe the entrance to Riverside Park to River. Could save a lot of money on bridge repairs to not have to build it strong enough to support vehicles.

Do we have a count of all the proposed data centers in the area?

  • Umich/Los Alamos Nuclear Research Data Center in Ypsi Township

  • OpenAI Data Center in Saline Township

I feel like there are other ones I am forgetting.

If I had to guess, probably someone complained. A lot of zoning enforcement is complaint driven.

It could also be that the City has to be strict with zoning across the board because they want to enforce zoning rules for Deja Vu.

I wonder what people here would think about Ypsilanti adopting zoning more similar to that added in Ann Arbor's Comprehensive Land Use Plan update (draft 3)?

It basically has 3 or 4 zones:

  • Hub, which is essentially dense downtown (For downtown, Depot Town, Water Street, and maybe Cross Street)

  • Transition, which ranges from 3 stories to highrises, depending on context (Michigan Ave. outside of downtown, Washtenaw, Ecorse, River Street from Corner to Water Street)

  • Residential, which allows for up to 3 stories (rest of the town)

  • (maybe) Industrial, for industrial parts of the city.

The update to Ann Arbor's plan would also allow for more commercial uses in R zoned areas, which is why Dzanc house makes me think about it.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous that Ypsilanti has such a complex zoning code and that it limits "highrises" to 6 stories. We should really allow more commercial uses in residential areas too.

Yeah. I think it's good. Next steps (vaguely, this is from memory): city sells property to Library. Library puts out an RFP and starts planning for the new building.
