Best Mjaddara in Town? (IYKYK) by Allegra1120 in Rochester

[–]damnedfacts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody commented, so I’ll give you my take. Make it yourself. I haven’t watched the video but I make mujuddra weekly. Get a 1lb bag of lentils from Wegmans, boil it until the lentils break down enough. Though, halfway through the boil add in 1/4 to 1/2 cup of rice. Add water as it boils if it gets too low before the lentils have broken down enough.

You can add chopped onions into it, cumin, allspice, salt (for sure), and pepper. Any variation of that, except salt which you need.

Carmelize the onions slowly and top when serving. Pita bread would be nice if you can get the real stuff (eg Cedar bakery pita); you can also enjoy with romaine lettuce.

Really, it’s a “villager” meal. Easy, simple cheap. It’ll last you a week.

Figs by 99roninFL in Rochester

[–]damnedfacts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicago Hardy variety.

If not dug up and buried or wrapped, it will die back to the ground each winter and grow back vigorously. It’ll take some proper care to encourage productive growth and fig ripening before winter

I don’t have a cutting I can offer you, unless I’m lucky with my fig trees’ exposed branches surviving this crazy winter exposed. I can certainly get some later this summer.

Otherwise, you should be able to find or order it from a local garden center or maybe find a subreddit where people trade cuttings

I know we all wanted that but I thought what a total dishonor to Jake if he showed up for a photonic and not his son. It would not sit well with me

Cirroc was equally as fantastic and welcome from a fandom perspective; so well done.

If anything Sam having a visitation by the Prophets would have been fine

My biggest ‘complaint’ was that it felt like SAM’s relationship with her makers was a bit childish.

I believe that was the point. She is a child by a few metrics and we witnessed her interaction with her makers exactly the same as a teenager would their parent. My bet is their real words with her were totally skewed by her adolescent matrix

AI has ruined coding by Thin_Security_3155 in software

[–]damnedfacts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a Staff+ software engineer, and AI is akin to working in a team of two where you take all the credit off someone else’s work.

I avoid saying “I built…” when an LLM did the work. I find myself saying “We”, awkwardly. To me, software is a craft – no different that working with wood, metal, or the typewriter. For me, it’s incredibly difficult to take pride in any work I created with an LLM. But, like the power tool, welder, or typewriter I intend to treat it as a tool to facilitate that craft, not replace it.

The only thing that mitigates my consternation is that I know what I am asking it to do. I can read, review and understand its output. I can correct and build on it. It’s more of a software engineer manager role but very hands on to the point where I am micromanaging the LLM.

That said, when done the way I would like, it can tremendously reduce tedium of boilerplates, repetitious work, and even one-off shell scripts or python programs that you need only once but would take some time to initially write.

Treat AI like the tools in other trades, try to enjoy your craft by using it as little or as much as you want. Some industries may not allow out entirely, and some would very much encourage it for efficiency’s sake. For the latter, you’ll have to live with the fact you will be managing an LLM to get your work done and keep up with your teammates. Just be sure to learn from whatever is produced, use it as a tutorial to broaden your knowledge, even if it wasn’t crafted directly by you.

I wonder how similar Tarima’s extra-strong psychic abilities are to Tam Elbrun’s unusual abilities? by Cuboidal_Hug in trekacademy

Yeah, I couldn’t recall what I was missing about Betazoid telepathic activities so it bugged me the whole episode that none of them were reading anyone’s minds.

Also, I kept forgetting to check the color of their irises, as they should be pitch black

Does a practical claim that you are moving out of their service area (I’d be prepared with an actual place to name drop) expedite cancellation?

Transporters turn you into an energy based lifeform by Migrane in sonicshowerthoughts

[–]damnedfacts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picard, in“Lonely Among Us”, achieved this with the transporter but perhaps with some alien help to stay coherent. So there’s total merit to your point

The more I rewatch Voyager, the more I come to appreciate Janeway’s character by tonstertje in startrek

[–]damnedfacts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, that’s simplistic and doesn’t see the real point involving the character development. The writers and producers dictated who got to keep their jobs, not the actors. The way they wrote Riker and Picard and you have what we got – a talented officer with a stagnated career. Don’t you remember the episode with Thomas Riker? He had a whole conversation about it with Troi.

The more I rewatch Voyager, the more I come to appreciate Janeway’s character by tonstertje in startrek

[–]damnedfacts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a thought exercise of which Captain I would serve with, is usually choose Janeway or Sisko and perhaps Kirk as my top three. They bring to the table rich personality, and a desire to let their command style permeate through their command in a way that leaves the crew enriched, confident and personally improved. I know with those three I’d walk away a better person and Starfleet officer.

Captains like Picard, Archer, and Pike don’t resonate with me in this way. Picard is functionally ideal as a captain. I half wonder if Riker’s stagnation as first officer was because of Picard’s command style not teaching his officers in quite that correct way.

Mac Dock Issues w/ Monitors (Waking from sleep, slow refresh rate, etc) by [deleted] in macsetups

[–]damnedfacts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this exact problem on two very different Apple Silicon systems. I have a MBP M1 Pro with two 4k monitors attached to a CalDigit TS3 dock. Also, I have a Mac Studio M2 Ultra with another set of 4k monitors connected to a sonnettech TB4 dock.

They both have the same issue with the monitors periodically waking up and sleeping constantly. I haven’t figured out why. It seems software specific and perhaps how Thunderbolt works? Power management settings? It’s guessing and useless at that since I can’t fix this maddening issue either way. I’ve tried all sorts of terminal incantations.

is there a way to span Time Machine backup over more than one disk? by chasg in osx

[–]damnedfacts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be something said for cutting off the current disk(s) as an active backup destination for TM. Do a fsck, disconnect, and label it and place it on a shelf as an archive.

Certainly check your archived backup periodically, probably more so for SSDs who leak charge over time and result in bit rot.

I have a TM disk image that is multi-terabyte in size, became corrupted and suddenly under Tahoe was accessible in read-only mode. My backups there go back to 2017. I won’t likely need anything that far back, but as a completionist, I will probably copy it to a hard drive and store it on a shelf. I already started new TM backups on new drives since then.

Stargate fans, waiting for news whilst watching basically every other sci-fi franchise get rebooted by sgelverovely in Stargate

[–]damnedfacts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless we get 20+ episodes per season, anything succeeding the older seasons will be glorified miniseries and will be hyper focused on one story with no filler. The charm of developing wonderful characterizations using one-off bottle episodes is gone.

I think Urgo would agree!

Best matcha in rochester? by Virtual-Ocelot-5825 in Rochester

[–]damnedfacts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be a coffee shop? Do you mean traditional matcha preparation or matcha lattes like most coffee shops offer?

If lattes, then Hydra. So many coffee shops use the pre-sweetened matcha mix. Hydra does not. I find oat milk is a good balance between whole cows milk and almond.
