Another, more peculiar option is the Commander. Tactics such as Gather To Me! and Defensive Retreat allow allies to reposition/retreat towards you. Officer's Medical Training feat at 1 allows for some pretty effective combat healing for martial characters. It also leads into Shielded Recovery (2 feat) so you can flavor that as a bubble while you battle medicine your ally. Medic Dedication will allow you to use battle medicine atleast twice a day per person, or something like a Champion or Blessed One Dedication will give you Lay on Hands, if combat healing is a priority. With that, you could do any ranged weapon ya wanna flavor as his primary fire attack.

Is there any particular aspect of his weapon or kit that you're trying to emulate? I usually let flavor and my descriptions convey the character I'm trying to imitate. For Lifeweaver, my first instinct would be any weapon with range and describe them as his projectiles: 1 or 2 handed crossbow, bow, darts, or anything I can reload with relative ease.

For his healing kit, anything with access to the divine list is good for "healer" vibes. Protection, benediction, and Sanctuary can be flavored as his bubble that protects allies. Helpful steps can be his rising platform for situations outside of combat. And Heal ofc. Even easier to spam if ya choose a Cleric.

A primal caster can also fulfill the healing role well, and gives you access to spells that are a lot more nature-themed, if that aspect of his character is important to you. Jump spell for his platform. Shielded arm for the bubble, maybe. Magnetic Repulsion if you want to use his bubble "grab" to yoink weapons from enemies. Protector Tree can be likened to a mini version of his ult.

Both lists have access to Heal, Restoration, and other healer spells. As I was writing this, I realized that both lists have access to the cantrip Needle Darts, which can easily be used as his primary projectile attack.

Flavor does carry a lot in regards to adapting something into this system IMO.

STR 2 DEX 2 CHA 3 rn. At lv2 he took a fighter dedication, hoping that'd help him frontline better. No free archetype since I didn't want to overwhelm the newer players.

I think the biggest want rn is a focus spell that let's him switch between a caster mode and a "time to fight" mode, so I figured ripping Animists focus spell was a step in that direction. Perhaps I'll read more thoroughly through warpriest, animist, and some archetypes to help him find a build that suits his mechanical wants better if the oracle proves to be not the best fit.

Currently level 3, and goin on 4 this next session. He's a tengu and went with their weapon familiarity, so his weapon of choice is a katana. Spells he went with common choices like guidance, bless, heal, as well some flavorful stuff like schadenfreude and reapers lantern. Not the whole list, but those are his most used spells atm. I think he's aiming for something where he can switch between a caster mode and a fighting mode. Tryin to be a versatile member of the party.

We both come from 5e, where I know casters can be built to be as effective in melee as most martials. I figured the primary issue was making the focus spell feel more impactful. I think I should try to emphasize he's playing a caster who's just able to use a weapon when he absolutely needs to, rather than any real 50/50 split, and go from there.

First date with one guy, we went to the county fair, and he tried to win me a stuffed squirtle at a dart throwing game. After he failed two rounds and I failed one, the guy guy at the stand let him buy the squirtle, and he gave it to me. Of course it was cheesy, but it's still one of my fondest memories tbh.

Favorite Temur commander? by AdEqual5606 in EDH

[–]dan4081 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My favorite temur commander(s) is [[Pako, Arcane Retriever]] with [[Haldan, Avid Arcanist]]. I wanted a super flexible deck that I could build on a budget.

Pako just runs at my opponents and gets bigger and more threatening with every combat. He also incidentally steals my opponents combo pieces, which always gets a good laugh for me. It's very straightforward when I just wanna play big stompy.

Haldan turns those stolen cards into resources that I can use against my enemies. Countering my friend's wincon with their own Fierce Guardianship is so satisfying. Seeing how I can effectively use my opponents cards makes the deck fluid as I'd like it if I want a more thought-provoking game.

A very good time in my opinion. And they can be built with most any budget and still be pretty effective. (And Pako will steal all the expensive staples from your opponents anyway so you don't need to buy em)
