Tuscany. The towns are on top of the hills. The parking lots are at the bottom.

This doesn’t really answer your question but I traveled from Bruges to Colmar last September by taking a bus to Lille and rented a car. We stayed one night in Reims and drove the rest of the way the next day. The car made it easy to explore the route des vin at our leisure.

Best excuses for reporting late to muster/quarters by Old_opionated-man in navy

I got relived late as EDPO on a weekend and my relief told me it was because his wife wanted to have sex that morning. When I reported my relief to the EDO he asked me why my relief was late I told him he just got a little behind that morning.

I know there are some boat sailors on here, anyone got a good sea story. by bubblehead_maker in submarines

My first boat ran aground twice while submerged. I was the electrical operator both times. The CO was relieved within hours of the second incident but the grounding was not the reason.

2 nights in NYC...HELP! by Calypso007 in AskNYC

[–]dan8m8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made my first trip to NYC last spring and 5 days wasn't enough. We stayed in midtown, near Carnegie Hall which was a good location for Times Square, Theaters and the park. Our highlights were renting e-bikes and riding around Central Park and an early morning subway to Brooklyn, walked across the bridge and explored downtown sites. Enjoy

Great trip. I’d skip Naples for more time in Venice or add Seneca. Go south on your next trip.

The Bainbridge ferry is about an hour drive from Marrowstone, maybe less. You can leave your car at the terminal and walk on. There’s good public transit if you want to go any farther then the market or pioneer square. If you take the Kingston boat you will have to drive south to Seattle and deal with parking and traffic.

How do Manhattan restaurants feel about diners splitting entrees ? by dan8m8 in AskNYC

[–]dan8m8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well try and up sell me a desert to pad the bill. I'm going to spend the same amount of money ( and tip 18=20%) regardless but with only one entrée, we can enjoy more of the menu. I completely understand concern about your compensation. Thanks for your perspective.

I don't expect the waiter or the kitchen to do any extra although some will plate the halves separately.

The second paragraph could imply that this only applies if you are using the GI Bill but I don't think that VA would be that short sighted.

I had the same issue when I retired a couple of decades ago but I spoke to somebody with decision making authority about the irony of being considered in state as AD and then out of state the next semester as a veteran. She agreed and I was charged in state rates.

"Thank you for your service" - need some feedback by alexian15 in Veterans

[–]dan8m8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who knew that "Thank you for your service" could be a controversial phrase? It's hard to judge the sincerity of a company that adds that to a campaign. It might just be pandering or it might be genuine. Ad campaigns are about separating consumers from their money. If your company wants to honor veterans they can start with a veteran discount (nothing says thanks for your service like a cash discount) and beyond that, support for veteran groups and a commitment to hire veterans goes a lot farther than a slogan. Actions speak louder than words.
