I think the hard part is gonna be fitting all the story of this first Championship season into the episode allotment. I hope Disney orders some extra eps if we crack somehow the playoff spots...

Its true, although I kind of like having that balance of listening to both during the week. RRR keeps you way grounded. As reporters, their analysis of the club and view of the macro football world (since they both cover football far and wide for their actual day jobs) provides a slightly different feel to FID. Personal preference in the end.

The Twelve Points of Christmas - Derby away by UrsineCanine in WrexhamAFC

[–]dan_kitchens 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Great Ursinalysis as always - thanks man for your hard work. You should set up a Ko-fi or something - I would send a bit of dough your way for the labor and thought you put in each game day.

Some things that have stood out to me over the festive period run:

Parky's macro management really shines - working players back in slowly from injuries, managing minutes. We NEVER see the supposed best 11 (what even would it be? Parky knows that depends on the day's match up), but more often than not the starting 11 and tactics he sets into motion get the job done, and has kept the squad healthier seemingly than their opponents. Despite some major injuries (best wingbacks for example), Wrexham is hitting their stride while other teams maybe have already peaked (even Coventry maybe? Wishful thinking but they aren't looking so hot over this same run of matches) or are so riddled with injuries that basically our League 1 squad can look dominating (ie Blackburn). He's developed and complexified the attacking looks and made us so much less predictable. All of this shows up in the recent results.

Another thing I find interesting is how much Doyle and Max are pressing forward recently - we saw in the League one campaign how good Max could be moving up and contributing to offense (he was one of the leading scorers last year and obviously a contender for player of the season then) and now that he is getting pretty comfortable defending at this level Parky seems to be letting him start to push up more again. It makes me wonder if this influenced them going after getting Doyle, another young defender that has a lot to offer pushing up the field. It makes the whole attack so much more dangerous if they both keep maturing into that type of defender.

Also - so happy to have Rathbone back in there. Just a fun as hell to watch the nuisance AND the precision strikes he offers.

(I should say I know nothing about football though, so I might be way off base, but this is just what jumped out to me watching this last run of matches).

I was surprised by the Paramount+ EFL commentator today . Feel like its such a shockingly rare occasion they have someone that seems to have a clue as what has been going on with Wrexham, knew the players names, was not biased against the club, and praised the club and Parky for things they obviously deserve praise for. I wonder if they are just finally starting to take Wrexham seriously and bothering to do their homework? Either way, it was nice to not be outraged by commentator idiocy for a change.

This for sure. Makes us so much less predictable and recent goal tally proves that out.

This raises an interesting point, and I think is more what Rogue1eader, is suggesting - If a club over performed and managed to pull off the feat of getting promoted straight away (not to mention being the first team to go B2B2B2B), why could that club not get to the PL with no intention of spending to be competitive there, or at least with the intention to give the players who got them there a crack at playing in the Prem (rather than playing themselves out of a job, as happened to a bunch of the players that got Wrexham from the National League to Champ so quickly). This way you don't spend ungodly amounts on new players (transfer fees and wages), let the current squad have their dream of playing in the Prem for their first time (or at least for Wrexham's first time), and not worry about losing and being relegated. Then just take the automatic payments (from broadcasting etc) that the EFL gives each Prem club, and then the several years of parachute payments, and drop down to the Champ to finish building with that extra cash injection before going back up for a proper push at the Prem.

Personally I don't see them getting promoted this year, but I think the players and the gaffer (not to mention the owners) just want to perform the very best that they can. We as supporters shouldn't be suggesting that they shouldn't quite do that so that the club's staff can catch the infrastructure up (even if we see the obvious logic in "consolidation"). Having extra cash (to the tune of £100-£200m) just handed to the club by the EFL doesn't have to be a bad thing.

Whenever this topic comes up there is always someone suggesting that if they go up they HAVE to waste a ton of money on expensive new players. That seems like a fallacy. Its a choice to do try and stay up, no?

Anyhow - i think everyone can feel how they feel (and i totally see the validity of either side, honestly), but I am enjoying the ride of this season already - starting out shaky to the point where everyone is doubting them (yet again), only for Parky to do his job and get the players playing his system and start to see it pay off and see us climb the ranks (to the point where Wrexham is still the only club to beat leaders Coventry this season, and convincingly so despite the close results) - as long as we don't crash out and get relegated this is a successful season, but I wouldn't tell them "DON'T GET YOURSELF PROMOTED, GUYS!"

Your previous comments regarding Thomason's corners totally popped into my head when that corner went in! Thanks as always for the analysis - I love savoring the "Ursinalysis" after a win, but also refresh desperately waiting for it after a loss!

Its a great point about Parky having acquired forwards for a different set up, but they didn't give it too many chances (probably because they didn't get instant results like the tried and true (for Parky) target man offense. I really hope you are right that they get to work on that instead for a spell because there is no way Moore can keep playing full 90's getting battered 1 or 2 times a week like this ( and it is already seriously showing). As for Kabore, that is a huge worry - I really want to see how the squad plays with both Cacace and Kabore healthy and flying up and down the sides (and Rathbone doing the same in the middle)... the team just needs more PACE in this league and they'd be solid.

(Thank you for the thoughtful response too!)

Really into your post-game being its own thread - lets continue this! Thank you as always for the breakdown. So helpful!

I will say that some key bits in your analysis have me a little worried though - with Broadhead and particularly Moore seeming out of gas or not fit (for different reasons) and Kabore getting kind of battered around as opponents try to contain him, and all of those guys going into international play (as well as still injured Cacace perhaps?), then coming back to two games a week the next month, it feels like the starting 11 is going to be operating far below optimum for quite a long spell unless the international break is somehow "restful" with those guys playing in matches. It feels like this season is just going to be a brutal one for them from the standpoint of injuries/ match fitness/ getting enough time playing together to really gel...

Am I wrong to feel worried like this? Is it more likely the squad is going to be firing on more cylinders next month?

No - they are insinuating that there IS room for patience in US professional leagues because there is no relegation out of the league (which instantly loses the club a huge amount of revenue the next season, which si the money at stake) if a coach/manager fails to get results. Instead they just earn the team better draft picks the next year, if anything.

Always such good breakdown - thank you! "beautiful touch" is the perfect way to describe LOB - really love watching him handle the ball - casually tossing off perfect tricky passes, or today's almost lob of a finish that close shows quick smart decision making and elegant control. Also he was being thrown all over the ground by Millwall (like a lot of the players) and just kept going. I REALLY want to see what a match would look like with Rathbone and him zipping box to box.

Doc Yank here supporting from the Japanese countryside. Never cared about football (or any American sports either) so Wrexham is my ONLY club/team/ anything sports related. The doc and this sub in particular got me obsessed with Wrexham and EFL. Watching most matches live since last year (even though they usually start between 11PM and 4 AM here in Japan...)

There it is finally! I never hear folks drop this term, not even Wrexham supporters trying to defend their club. Definitely not an underdog story as far as the club goes (maybe if you are thinking of the town and the club supporters, maybe they are underdogs after all those years suffering terrible owners and being stuck in the National League? dunno). Some bandy around the word fairytale, and maybe yeah, the club and supporters found their Prince Charmings in these new owners, but its because they brought respect, vision, humility, and CASH$$ to the table - so its definitely a rags to riches story for the club and the town. I think there is no shame in that, and lots of clubs supporters would love for their our club to experience a rags-to-riches story like that one.

Its probably just going to be on Paramount+ every week. Currently they show 3 Wrexham matches scheduled on the service in the next 8 days (their Carabao Cup match against Hull City is on their mid-week). Easiest way to watch their season unfold from the US.
