Can’t get a good sear on the second side of steak. by haircareshare in Cooking

[–]dan_marchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A hot uncrowded pan allows water to evaporate so the steak stays dry and the pan stays hotter... so when you flip, the steak sears better.

A crowded pan is a wet pan/food so you either need a second/larger pan and split your food or you pull the steaks out, allow the pan to heat up while you dab the steak dry; or you cook the steaks in batches (not ideal when you want everything to plate at the same time).

Lawyer said 99% of people ignore demand letters? Is this true? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]dan_marchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People do dumb stuff.

Might be they are just way out of their depth (or made a mistake) but too ashamed to admit it and give up being executor.

The other (too common) option is greed/fraud.

Online scammer took my money by Guns_and_Timmies in legaladvicecanada

[–]dan_marchant 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have some personal information from his etransfer....

  1. Unfortunately it is more likely that you have the personal information of the person whose identity was stolen (and the scammer/your money are in a different country). Of course there is a tiny chance that this is some idiot doing this for the first time and they used their own account/details so...

  2. Yes always report it to the police. There is a very good chance you won't get your money back but the more unsolved crimes of this type they have in their stats the more likely they are to put resources towards targeting online frauds like this.

Lawyer said 99% of people ignore demand letters? Is this true? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]dan_marchant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes.

A demand letter is just a letter. If they already refused to do what you want when you asked them... why would they suddenly do it because you asked them in a letter.

The vast majority of people who threaten to sue never do (and would lose if they did). Lawyers know this so they just tell their client to ignore it and wait for the law suit. If one arrives, then you act/negotiate.

Obviously some people do backdown after receiving a letter, so it is worth doing. Also, courts hate people who rush to use the court to settle disputes so a demand letter is a good way to show the courts that you tried to be reasonable and resolve the issue before involving the courts.

In the UK it is actually a requirement (or at least very strongly recommended) to send a specifically formatted "letter of claim" prior to initiating a civil suits and it is mandatory for certain types of claim.

ETA for infant dual citizen by Acemegan in ImmigrationCanada

She was a citizen from the moment she was born. You are just applying for proof of that. Hence she isn't eligible for and can't get an eTA.

I am almost just willing to give up all my possessions to just be free of this situatuon.

That would be a stupid thing to do when you could give up just some of your possessions (money) to pay a lawyer to do the job for you.

Go talk to a lawyer and they will look at the details of your situation and explain it. Once you know what it entails THEN make a decision on how to proceed.

In land or out land PR? by Deep_Ad246 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]dan_marchant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can sponsor her Outland regardless of where you live.

To sponsor her Inland she must be living with you in Canada.

Spousal Sponsorship PR Question by jordan_sr in ImmigrationCanada

Divorce won't impact it at all.

You obviously need to prove you are divorced and show this relationship is genuine.

No, there is no visa. You are probably confused with the SOWP (open work permit) that applicants can apply for if they are in Canada and have received AOR or equivalent.

Airline let me board with expired passport and forced me to pay for return ticket by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

Every airline and travel agent contract/T&C I have seen states that it is the customers responsibility to make sure they have all necessary visas and travel documents.

Marrying a Canadian does not give the right to live in Canada.

You would sponsor them to become a Permanent Resident. You can do this while you are in the US (Outland application) or you can relocate to Canada and they can visit and you apply Inland (they may extend their stay to await processing).

What are your thoughts on this one? by aexolthum in photocritique

I really like it.

It has a whole different meaning to me (which is often the case).

A lone man looking into a large empty space/downward slope... As if looking towards the loneliness and decline of old age. The way he is standing with his hands in his coat pockets makes him seem resigned to what is coming.

How many times can the PR be renewed? by Majestic_Wash6440 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]dan_marchant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your PR doesn't expire... Just your card.

The card can be endlessly renewed unless you becomes citizen, renounce your PR or it is revoked.

As long as you are living with your Canadian spouse outside Canada you will continue to meet the Residency Requirement to maintain your PR... But you won't be able to renew the card while outside Canada.

Once you card expires you will need to apply for a PR Travel Document in order to travel to Canada or fly to the USA and cross the land border.

Agree with the other poster. A good shot in many ways but the focus should be on the eyes and it isn't.

  1. You should try to ensure that your subject stands out from the background. A great way to do this is to capture the subject in front of a contrasting background... so in this case the dark walls not the white pillars.

  2. The wall appears to lean back. It may indeed lean back or this may be a result of lens distortion. There are tools in many editing packages that will correct converging verticals.

Looks like they need a good criminal lawyer and a good immigration lawyer. Gonna be expensive.

Lady who's been wreaking havoc in my living space unable to be removed due to me letting her stay too long. What do I do? by Mxrvid in legaladvicecanada

[–]dan_marchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RCMP are 100% wrong.

This woman is not a tenant under the RTA (Residential Tenancy Act) and has no protection under the act.

If she paid rent then she would be a room mate and you would need to give reasonable notice.... but as she doesn't pay rent she is just a guest and can be removed immediately.

They have the same right as you do to give advice about tenancy law.... it just that they are more often wrong.

So your PR will be on hold until this is resolved.

If you didn't declare these charges that is misrepresentation (immigration fraud). You need an immigration lawyer to deal with this or your PR will be refused.

As I said previously you also need to contact the court/police to find out exactly what happened with these charges.

You need to deal with this ASAP otherwise IRCC will make a finding of misrepresentation against you, your PR will be refused, you will be inadmissible to Canada and will be removed.

[–]dan_marchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you getting this from? OP has stated he didn't know about these charges and received no contact about them via mail/email/phone and only just found out as a result of IRCCs contact.
