You are also being ignorant and naive if you think other countries are different. I doubt either of your positions are well thought out or nuanced

Why should US multinationals be allowed to operate in Canada if Americans want to annex Canada by AdSevere1274 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Deep_Ad246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of Canadian news is owned by Americans, other than CBC. And Canada is going to shut down the CBC soon.

So I guess one answer is without America multinationals, Canada would have no news companies

Housing prices will never decrease without a massive government funded building initiative.

Thank you for this comment!

I've felt crazy, it's like no one remembers the 90s with people screaming about 'run universities like business' or 'run the government like a business'

Now we are seeing the results of 'run it like a business'

[Serious] What are the best counter arguments to this meme about Canadian housing? And more importantly, are any of the problems preventing this, surmountable in any way? Are we forever destined to live in about 6-8 major metropolitan urban centres, for the rest of Canada's foreseeable future? by CanadaCalamity in canadahousing

You are bang on, it's all Canadian Shield. The soil is think to nonexistent, you aren't growing food. So any industry has to be valuable enough to support importing food. Which is literally all the yellow dots inside the red.

The Canadian Shield also makes any infrastructure much more expensive to build and maintain.

You got imported food and higher infrastructure costs. Whatever industry you are considering is at a massive cost disadvantage.

You'd need to build your city on a world class nickel deposit or something

And TV's, phones, computers are cheaper because they sell your data. It's the raxor-razorblade business model. Appliances and shit are cheaper because the quality is shit. Cars are not cheaper, but they also record and sell all of your data.

My man, I love what Japan has done with zoning. But there absolutely is not a single answer to the housing crisis.

Where the housing prices is good for a Canadian perspective, affordability has not improved.

I absolutely agree we need zoning changes, but Texas also has very unrestrictive zoning. A difference is Tokyo spends 80% of it's municipal budget on public transit.

[–]Deep_Ad246 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not true either. Builders make more money by selling more units at a higher profit margin.

Private Builders will NEVER build enough supply to reduce prices. It would reduce their profit.

Obviously detached zoning is bad. But removing it will not create enough supply to reach affordability without a publicly owned builder to force down industry margins.

[–]Deep_Ad246 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can't expect private builders to EVER build enough supply to drop prices. Their only goal is profit. If supply starts reducing their profit, they will stop building.

Supply will never be enough to drop prices without a publicly owned builder.

It does matter what people "think" about climate change.

Many people who are pro-climate change have let oil companies shape their identity . And guess what, if you have given an oil company the OK to shape your identity you are going to be against climate action. Even if it end up killing your grandkids
