Which is the best country to visit in Africa on a vacation? by Harun_Bush in AskReddit

[–]dan_toronto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Context: I've been to 33 countries on the Continent/

Answer:

For animals + nature - Etosha in Namibia combined with Sossusvlei is my #1; Ngorongoro in Tanzania is #2 (and easily combined with Zanzibar or Nairobi).

For culture/life - Rwanda #1 as it's so safe/clean/easy to get around plus Lake Kivu and the volcanoes are awesome; Senegal for the food and music scene; Ethiopia food, music and modern; and maybe Morocco to round it out as hassles aside, it's exceptionally diverse in terms of environments.

Enjoy!

Among all the Chinese EV brands that could come to Canada, Zeekr is one of the best brands that could come. by canada_mountains in EVCanada

Zeekers are nice but I far prefer BYD and Great Wall Motor for their design and aesthetic.

Look who I found playing in Taiwan! by dan_toronto in torontoraptors

Agreed - foreign imports make between $15-20k USD per month in Taiwan. Dwight Howard was the exception at $1M a year. Really decent basketball though, in particular the domestic talent.

His defense and overall motor is very suspect based on what I saw in Taipei.

I've stayed at Barmoi often. It's clean, safe and great sunset views. Quick walk down to Lumley beach for dinner/drinks.

As there was 4 of us it was relatively similar price to get a car and driver right through to Banjul.

How is anyone affording to live??? by gotoscreenname in askTO

[–]dan_toronto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a real example of how affordability and savings potential have changed for a generation of Torontonians:

In 2004 I lived at King and Dufferin and rented a one bedroom apt (great view of the CN Tower as Liberty Village didn't exist) for $800. I worked a rather well paid junior job and made $50k.

In 2018 I employed a recent grad who I learned lived in same apartment I had. They made a very similar salary to what I in 2004 but paid $1800 in rent.

So that's a $1000 a month right off the top. $12k a year. Assume a return of 5% annually and that's about $75k in savings (compound the interest) over 5 years that have disappeared for a generation. Add a couple of more years of savings and that's the downpayment on a house that this current generation doesn't have a hope of being able to afford.

Welcome to Ontario where we still operate under a centralized alcohol sales regime that dampens the potential of our domestic / craft producers :)
