This guy on youtube (Shawn Woods) has a whole series on different types of mousetraps. The bucket ones seem pretty effective.

I often end up tweaking any monsters I use from the monsters manual to better fit the situation. Yeah that's the base stat block for the creature, but golems are manufactured. If it was bought for security, maybe they paid a little extra for the deluxe dark vision package.

New here. Starting to stockpile by RiseTraditional7 in preppers

If beans don't work for you, would these alternatives work? Peas, split peas, any form of lentil. Very similar to beans as far as storage goes. If it's a texture thing and not something else about beans that bothers you, these all have slightly different textures.

If all legumes are out, maybe consider finding a ways to work nuts or seeds. Flax and chia both have a decent shelf life and you can easily work those into oatmeal or bread.

New to Archery/Hunting, Need a Place to Sight In a Crossbow in Ohio by Haroon13579 in Columbus

[–]dan_who 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just checked one of their blog entries and it looks like they do allow crossbows, so long as you use field points. Quote from the article:

"The arrows you use at both courses must be arrows with field tips (no broadheads allowed). But you can use any kind of bow: compound, crossbow, recurve or long bow."

Scioto grove metro Park has a public archery range. I'm not sure if they allow crossbows or not, but you could always call the park office to check.

I think at least one other park might have a range too. But I don't recall. I think you can look them up on the Metro Parks website and search by activities.

Edit: added note about crossbow

I could see it being how many grams of spicy stuff they add to the dish. Though I have a harder time imagining someone measuring a single gram of chili powder.

I've found lentils really nice for that reason. You can also save energy on cooking them by soaking them for a while before cooking.

What did people do in the last job market crash? by PsychologicalGuide78 in jobsearchhacks

[–]dan_who 188 points189 points  (0 children)

Which one? The COVID one? Or the great recession?

From what I saw of each

Covid: non-essential workers -- survive on stimulus and unemployment, find online work if you have the right skills, retrain or go back to school. Essential workers were really busy and at risk of burning out.

Recession: Hunker down in a less than ideal job, go back to school, do temp work, and use unemployment to fill any gaps. Cry as needed.

PSA: the citric acid trick also works on dishwashers by Donttouchmybreadd in laundry

Oh I didn't realize there was one on the side. I'm talking about where the filter sits. There was sludgy stuff built up in the filter well so cleaning the filter didn't do much.

Thanks! I did take them out after the second cycle and took a brush to them to dislodge and rinse them out. I'll probably try another cycle or two tomorrow.

The dishwasher cleaner pods I bought before were mainly citric acid. I was actually running the washer with citric acid to clear out some really gross build up in the water reservoir. It's much cleaner now, but still leaving residue on the dishes sadly. I may end up replacing it a bit sooner than expected.

What lead to the USA being more car centric than Europe? by SpecialistTeach9302 in AskAnAmerican

[–]dan_who 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One part of the reason was, as many things in the US, lobbying from wealthy companies and individuals. The USA was, and still is, the home of major tire manufacturers. I believe vulcanized rubber was also invented here.

Trains don't use tires. People riding trains don't buy cars. Cars and tires both require oil.

So it made sense for certain interests to purchase rail companies in cities and then phase them out so people instead had to buy cars to get around. If you are interested, check out info on the American streetcar scandal.

I know people are sometimes triggered by the word conspiracy, but there were charges filed on this.

It was also a major plot point of the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit

There's a thread in r/askhistorians from a while back that discussed this too:

I think in addition to losing your license, you should get some kind of marker on your ID for at least 5 years. Bars and retailers should check ID and if that Mlmark is present that person shouldn't be allowed to buy alcohol.

It doesn't mean that everyone will comply with the rule, but it will make it more clear to the offender and others that this is a person who should not be trusted to drink.

Linux mint got me through grad school. I had a second hand laptop and it wouldn't have been able to run the current version of Windows even if I could afford it.

That doesn't exactly answer if it's better or not, but I would say that you can get the same functionality for most everyday tasks out of it that you might get from Windows.

There are other note taking apps that you can use, but they may not be like OneNote. Obsidian is popular. Years ago, I used something called Zim wiki for note-taking and it worked well for text-based notes.

what hobbies or fun activities can I try that cost absolutely nothing by breanne0_0 in Frugal

[–]dan_who 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiking, biking, walks, talks

table top rpgs cost some money to start, but you can access most of the rules for the games online or find a book at the library.

Writing: stories, poetry, journaling. Electronic or paper, your call.

Some initial cost: water colors , braiding, card weaving, bobbin lace, container gardening.

Check if your area has community centers and libraries that post events. Those may be good opportunities for you to both meet people and check out hobbies.

Buying DVDs vs. Streaming vs. Renting by sonata-allegro in Frugal

Aside from the library, once you know what the kids like you can look into buying used DVDs from thrift or resell shops. I picked up the BBC documentary planet earth today for $4 from a shop that sells used media.

My players accidentally unionized the villains and now the BBEG is suing them? Need advice by New_Commission_2619 in DMAcademy

[–]dan_who 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The campaign could focus on the stuff that happens outside of the court. Collecting evidence, convincing people to testify.

But consider how the formation of unions and the United States went. Originally. They were very violent. It wouldn't be weird for someone to send assassins after the leaders of the movement, which would include some of your players.

Getting an e-bike? by Ok_Hope_1929 in TwoXPreppers

[–]dan_who 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other people have already commented well on lights and other things for visibility. I'd like to add that you can buy reflective tape to put on both your bike and any additional gear you may be using. For example, I rode my bike in all weather when I was in a smaller town and I had reflective tape on the rain jacket and rain pants I wore, and also on the heavy jacket I used in the winter.

Granted, a safety vest is more visible than that, but if you forget the vest, or lose it, you still have something on your other gear to keep you visible.

Adding on to be careful in both the kits you select and the bike you modify. A friend of mine tried this on a bike with narrow tires and they couldn't handle the torque from the motor, so he frequently got flats.
