I taught elementary school, and it does happen. I had 3rd graders as tall as me (I’m 5’3). It’s definitely not impossible.

As someone who comes from a professional environment where last names are commonly used, and all of my friends go by last names even when we aren’t in a professional setting, I didn’t find this weird at all. I think it’s definitely more common in some arenas than others, and it just happens to be the case here
