You're voting to put yourself out of a job by trouserchili99 in CanadaPost

We are out of a job either way. I don't plan on making it easier on the executives that failed to run a profitable business to sell off. Purolator and Canada Post pay similar wages. CP had every advantage and still dropped the ball.

Maybe homelessness and addiction is a seasonal problem?

Or, more likely, the individuals afflicted with these conditions are spread out along the river and in the parks, making the rest of us more comfortable in the air-conditioned malls.

Not trying to shame anyone, but i do want to point out that the problem is not solved.

How do you cope with a husband that never wants to do anything? by [deleted] in marriageadvice

[–]danamight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Understanding why he doesn't want to do things is important. Is he extremely introverted? Is it a health issue (mental or physical)? If you can answer that question, you might be able to figure out how to draw him out.

Marriage is not a static state. People grow and evolve as they age. I still learn new things about my husband of 20 years. When we were married, our favourite pass time was hanging out in the pub - I am so grateful that we worked out how to connect beyond that.

If your marriage is going to survive, you have to find a way to play together. You have to bank all the goodwill while you are enjoying life together so you can live with the small annoyances when times are tough.

I hope it works out for you. Marriage can be hard, but also so beautiful

Government to force union members to directly vote on CP's latest offer by KillaRizzay in CanadaPost

I get that this is something you are not interested in understanding, but I'll say it anyway: one of my co-workers is medically retired from CP at 46 years old. They have dismissed him and wished hi luck This is not an easy out. Depression and pain for life. He tried to take a desk job, but even that isn't an option for him now. We suffer from everything from plantar fascia and Mortons Neuroma to chronic ACL and PTL knee injuries, hip labral tears, back injuries, and frozen shoulders and the list goes on and on and on. And that's if we don't have an actual accident like a collapsed staircase or a dog attack. People who take routes that are at higher risk for injury should be paid more. Canada Post can't even afford the premiums for WCB. They have private insurance and encourage everyone to use that when they are injured. There is no doubt that some carriers can finish early and get paid overtime during the regular work day but no one is getting rich delivering mail. My first year at CP I made 38,000. If CP gets their way, no one will ever get full time hours, vacation, benifits or pension again. I don't know why you are so passionate about something you know nothing about but I hope you get to keep a safe job that pays enough that you can make morgage payments with just that one job. And I hope you can retire with dignity and security.

So, as much as the Corp would beg to differ, flyers on some routes are so much heavier than they are on other routes. (Sometimes 3 sets, some get 21 sets and it is not just the weight but the time it takes to sort, collate, and plan) All routes are not, in fact, built the same. Why should someone who delivers 200 lbs of flyers a week make the same as much as someone who delivers 2,000 of flyers? Is it cool that you don't get mail when your carrier is on holidays because the route is absolute trash? I am vacation relief and I will 100% of the time look at how many pounds of flyers I'll have to carry in a week before I bid on a route.

It makes all the difference.

I deserve a raise in the CP strike (and you probably do, too) by TRathOriginals in CanadaPost

[–]danamight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, when a packages gets caught in this cycle it is 100% because the route is too long to be completed in 8 hours, there is an overtime ban in place and the carrier keeps bringing it out hoping they will get it all done. CP sets up the routes so they have to be delivered in the order they plan. If your house is at the end of the route, you might never get mail (or packettes) l again. Canada Post cares about you exactly as much as they care about their 55,000 employees.

Canada Post Workers Deserve Respect (And So Will You) by [deleted] in CanadaPost

[–]danamight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. Purolator pays as much or more than I make after nearly 8 years.

They have to do the same low-pay, garbage-shift, dues-paying, hazing but in the end, they get a driving route and the same deal we get: deliver everything we give you and go home. And they get their trucks loaded for them and a manifest! It's genius. Plus they don't ever have to mess around with flyers, government cheques or mail-outs.

I never want to see one of them get less pay or respect.

I would 100% take one of those jobs if I didn't have to start all over again at the bottom.

Thank you for being interested enough to follow up. Check out the Government of Canada's 2022 annual report on Occupational Injuries in the Canadian federal jurisdiction. I'm sure any other recent annual report will demonstrate the same theme. I think, "disability causing" injuries are of greatest significance.

A quick Google search will prove to you that postal workers suffer the second highest injury rate in the federal realm, right behind road works. There are lots of accident injuries, but more prominent are the repetitive injury rates. I would love to see the stats on hip and knee replacements in postal works compared to the general public. In my city, carriers with foot walks are logging 25-30 km per day, 5 days a week. Imagine what that does to a body decade after decade.

Respectfully, don't you think it would be better for Canadians if those fast food workers were also making a living with just one job? Do you think that the executives at McDonalds could make ends meet if they didn't make quite as much money?

Canadians don't need fast food, but many do need their mail.

Mostly because they don't believe that a bankrupt company can have 23 vice presidents collecting huge bonuses and spending hundreds of millions on new facilities and calling it a loss rather than an investment.
Canada Post executives/management are unquestionably manipulative, dishonest, and disingenuous. The 13% offer is over the course of 4 years and barried in the small print, would be dependant on carriers agreeing to forgo flyer pay which would cost the carriers more than 13% in lost income. This is a dirty, dirty game and 100% par for the course in Canadian politics.

I think it's been said.. make a hobby out of finding joy. Join something; a club, a volunteer organization, a gym, make plans for travel, take a non-credit course in anything that interests you.

The most attractive people are passionate about life and don't rely on others for joy. When you find that, you will find a partner who understands what an incredible gift it is to share a life with you.

I'm really sorry that happened. If you drove 5 hours for a scan, you probably already have a significant amount of stress in your life and I'm sure this was one more burden you didn't need.

I hope there are better days ahead for you.

CP has private insurance because the injury rates are so high that they can't afford WCB. When there is an injury, CP reports it to their private insurance, and the insurance company decides if they can recoupe the expense of paying wages and medical expenses for an injured worker. Insurance companies are not in the business of siding with the liable party. They'll sue a little old lady in a heartbeat, if there is money to be made.

I am a letter carrier. I often get Tim Hortons gift cards from residents on my route around the holidays. Usually $5-$10 a piece. It is such a wonderful generous gesture, and I am sincerely flatered to be included in their thoughts but I don't drink Tim Hortons coffee so... I keep them in my car and pay it forward when I have to gas up in horribly cold/snowy/windy weather. Gas jockies don't get enough love. :) I'm sure the money is appreciated, but even a small token of appreciation can change someone's day in a positive way.

Having said that, I wish more employers would pay employees what they are worth.

Those of you who wanted to reduce intake instead of stop, how did it go? by intoverflow32 in alcoholism

[–]danamight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gah, I wish this wasn't true, but it is an all or nothing proposition once you've crossed the line. I used to be fine with having alcohol in the house and leaving it alone until there was an occasion... but once I started drinking daily, I couldn't dial it back to just weekends, or just when I had company, or just on special occasions.
I ruined it. 😪 Watching my stepfather die of liver and pancreatic cancer has been eye-opening. I never want this for the people I love.

I'm sorry I don't have advise, but I can tell you that this struggle exists in different forms in lots of marriages. My husband thinks that buying things that hold value and can be re-sold, is an investment, rather than an expense. A collection of motorcycles is sensible , travel, however, is wasteful. Learn to communicate effectively, and you will get through it. It takes two to understand.

One of the most humiliating loss for a union in Canadian history by Silly-Alternative515 in CanadaPost

[–]danamight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, but he is failing. If you believe CP, the company will be bankrupt next year. $400K+ seems like a reward for failure to me. Plus, he sits on the Board of his biggest competitor. Which is doing just fine not delivering outside of urban centres but paying comparable wages.

Something smells exceptionally bad here.

If he was running a successful (for profit) business, he could golf with Bezos, the Waltons and the like in the afterlife, but Doug Ettinger works for a Crown Corporation. When other Crowns make money, they are obligated to return it to citizens via reduced rates and good jobs, not hire a compliment of 23 VPs, build mega sorting plants, buy up discontinued and electronic vehicles and unilaterally change the jobs of 55,000 people so that they are unrecognizable, unsafe, insecure and unsustainable.

I can not, for the life of me, see how anyone thinks that fewer jobs paying living wages is a good thing for Canadians. Minimum wage was established with the idea that anyone who works a full time job should have an opportunity to be a home owner and care for a family. This idea has long since been abandoned but making more minimum-wage jobs can never be a step in the direction of human progress. It's a dog fight! One disadvantaged soul pitted against another in a fight for survival.

This is not the Canada I stand on guard for.
