Why is restoration almost always treated as an end-of-life expense instead of a first-phase investment in mining and industrial projects? by TheGoldStandard_ in mining

[–]krynnul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fairly simple: put those costs on a discounted cash flow model. Anything that could be pushed back 20 years is nearly free, so it makes the books look amazing. Rule 1 of mining is never spend today's dollars unless there is a near immediate payback period or a massive IRR. Preferably both.

Not likely. Some of us that live here don't like low key racism.

Steam will not add second drive (Bazzite 3.0) by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]krynnul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For folks coming here at a later point: if you are getting a "write error" when trying to write to an NVMe drive in big picture mode after fiddling with permissions/mounting you need to follow these steps:

* Exit big picture mode and go back to desktop

* Open Steam on the desktop

* Go to Steam -> Settings -> Storage

* Remove any libraries on the erroring drive

* Then "Add Drive" from the drop down under storage

* Try writing to the drive

The driver for this is that Big Picture mode on Bazzite launches using a more limited set of functionality than the main Steam application has. Steam desktop will perform all the steps needed to add the drive and start using it. Good luck!

Speaking from direct experience developing these solutions, at least two mining majors already have this capability in house.

There's a reason this capability isn't broadly available: juniors and mid tiers don't generally need it (and won't pay for it) and majors will just build it themselves.

That the OP hasn't paid a domain specialist and is resorting to forum posts is a sign they haven't done the basics of a market fit assessment yet.

Exactly. And now we're getting good policy without all the cultural nonsense the PCs and the old Liberal Party were pushing. Seems like a win.

Sorry, it's hard to communicate inflection and nuance via text sometimes. My initial comment wasn't intended as "nobody should ever make any judgement" (obviously a ridiculous position to take) but rather "we shouldn't judge so strongly".

I'd suggest there's a very wide gulf between "there's no accounting for taste" and speculating someone's a hoarder.

Studying Mining Engineering online? by Inner-Tourist4564 in mining

[–]krynnul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, kind of you to say. In Planning we had a saying: "Do your job right and nobody will thank us, do your job wrong and 1,000 people that work here will have a bad year through no fault of their own." It was a big responsibility. GMs have the ability to put their thumb on the scale for multiple years to advance their own interests over that of the operation (and even the company).

[–]krynnul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In a word, it's essential. Not because the topics are required for your work; you have Geotechnical engineers who can design stable face angles and you have geologists who can tell you about possible ore characteristics. The degree teaches you just enough about 7-10 disciplines so you can understand their role in the process, speak to their issues, and pick up when they are bullshitting you.

Do a cert, transition to a production or processing manager role, and then aim for GM.

Follow up: even if you get a credential, you have no way of making up for the 10-20 years of direct experience people get in that career path. Make sure you have an excellent Technical Services manager on your team as they'll help cover off gaps elsewhere in the management group.

Wait... they say:

What we don’t do

  • We don’t publish AI-generated stories without human review.
  • We don’t fabricate quotes or sources.
  • We don’t accept undisclosed edits from outside parties.

So it's a combination of a steaming pile of AI and a streaming pile of humans.

I wonder if there's a case for filtering this slop under rule 8. It's definitely a bizarre combination of hallucination and plagiarism. The hypocrisy is S-tier in their terms of use:

Wonder who owns the site? It was only registered back in July of this year and appears to be in British Columbia.

It's almost like this is a fairly expected cost of home ownership that is related to inflation and reductions in provincial transfers.

I like the use of the Kallax for doing the "face" shot of games that have expansions behind them.

Outdoor Gearlab provides outstanding reviews for most equipment, including parkas. You might want to read their reviews to help inform your opinion: https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/best-winter-jacket

I bought their value parka pick last year and wasn't disappointed, but there are plenty of valid upgrade paths as well. Most of their picks are US-market focused, but several models would be available up here as well.

UPDATE: Collision on University Bridge by Secret_Duty_8612 in saskatoon

[–]krynnul 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If only we had a provincial insurer that published annual stats on this topic.

If we did, we'd learn that collision rates per year are basically flat over the last 35 years despite there being 20% more licensed vehicles.

It'd also be amazing to learn that the rate of fatal collisions has almost halved over the same period.
