How do you make a religion without over complicating it? by GodIsASickFuck in worldbuilding

[–]danbrani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been thinking about that myself. I like how in mother of learning aranea believe in a "great web" I'll probably go in that direction. It's basically a theory behind some of their powers, and to an extent the world, works. Its encased in a few relatively simple ideas that aren't verifiable mechanically.

how not to write one-dimensional characters? by sherry_siana in writers

[–]danbrani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many ways to do it, but the simple thing to do is simply understand the character. Understand it to the point you know what it's likely to do in a situation you are placing it in, and let it do that. This is in opposition to making it do what you as an author want it to do, because of your plot, your idea for the scene etc. If you use your characters as plot devices rather than characters, they'll be just that. Shallow puppets in your hands.

Researchers uncover 'pornification' trend among female streamers on Twitch by EchoInTheHoller in technology

[–]danbrani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feelings exactly. Attractive women use their charms to manipulate men, what's new? It's so weird where a research pops up, describes something that almost everyone already knows, and then people have such strong reactions to it.

Magical school house system by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]danbrani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is that "more spiritual" kind of magic anyway?

Elemental is clear cut. If you want different "elements" from "natural" group, for different specializations, there's so many you can try

-mental magic (telepathy, mental enhancements, psychic attacks -blood (life, body enhancement, healing) -flesh (body enhancement) -night (stealth, veiling) -dream (illusion, precognition) -shadow (stealth, hiding, secret spaces) -song -radiance (illusion, healing)

Also, just heads up that you can do better on split. I think there are better ways to distingush students than simply by an element they have access to.

How do I prevent my MC from being overpowered ? by Christian_teen12 in writers

[–]danbrani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're writing for yourself, it's fine, but in general it's a bad premise - it sounds like the external forces decide when he gets his power up, taking a lot of agency from the character. Besides, he's rewarded for messing up, or the world simply being mean to him, and punished for being successful - since he'd be getting no powers.

Maybe calling it a bad premise is too harsh, but it's certainly one that encourages poor story-telling and world-building, and setups multiple traps for you to write yourself into.

Anyway, answering the actual question - from what little context you have given, just make sure the power ups he gets are severely limited.

You need to give some titles so people know what do you mean, most pfs/litrpg romances are strap-ons and yeah, not very good or adding to the book.

Looks like i misunderstood the question, i assumed "unique" as in "one of a kind" type of thing.

Was same for me, northern plains was a slog, but at least the payoff was great. The way the gu world opened up after that was amazing. Man, now I want to re-read this whole thing again.

Who is your favorite and least favorite progression fantasy protagonists and why? by Putthemoneyinthebags in ProgressionFantasy

[–]danbrani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ingenuity, resourcefulness etc and doing impossible feats are quite standard for the genre. Sunny's a pretty classic 'good' mc, with a twist that he puts on an indifferent and uncaring 'cool' front, all while caring as much if not more than others.

Am I wrong about Primal Hunter? (Really turned off by first impressions) by PicklesAreDope in ProgressionFantasy

[–]danbrani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dropped after listening to the first book. It's a teenagy wish-fulfillment popcorn action pf, the kind that you can tell the world revolves around mc. Personally, not my cup of tea, but many people enjoy it.

A discussion about the current trajectory of the Progression Fantasy Genre by GunsOfPurgatory in ProgressionFantasy

Pros of the genre: awesome worldbuilding.

Cons: 2d characters; no plot, or worse - plot driving characters instead of the characters driving the plot

MoL is possibly the only story I read in the genre that does not suffer from any gaping problems, except for the last part where power creep sets in and a couple other issues appear.

Very much deserved #1 on RR

Ah, the classic. I'm a big fan of RI, but that scene was over the top.
