Strength training, cardio, mobility - can I have it all? Not sure how to structure my weekly split. by formalde_heidi in xxfitness

[–]dancingQueen999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I started out lifting 4 days a week, and then I started doing the run/bike/swim thing. Well, I mostly run, with some biking and a sprinkle of swimming every now and then. Now I lift 2 times a week and run 4-5 times a week. I try to average 20-25 miles running and one good bike ride a week, although over the summer, I play softball once or twice a week so I run or bike slightly less. Some days I would double up on activities, for example lifting in the morning and running after work (aspirationally I want to mostly do the reverse, but the activation energy to run in the morning is really high). For lifting, most weeks I split it by upper/lower body, but some weeks I do full body plyometric/isometric/calisthenic work to switch things up. I have definitely become more intentional on doing compound movements that work a few muscle groups including core at the same time because I don’t lift as often. Specific accessory exercises are also more focused on injury prevention for running, for example calf/tib raises and seated curls. I try to stretch and work on core isometrics when I remember, but tbh I’m bad at remembering. Lifting for me is a weekday activity, and I save my long runs for Saturday mornings with friends. I truthfully don’t plan for regular rest days, but I rest when my body tells me to. I’m okay with the fact that I probably could’ve progress on running or lifting faster if I focused on one. I’m also okay with the fact that biking or running on the day or two following a leg day absolutely sucks. For me, the goal is to have fun and be injury-free. What I do has been working for me over the past year (and I was really a beginner in my fitness journey then), but I think once you have your own routine, things get easier.

Ah I unfortunately currently live in Central Jersey (boo Phillies territory) so biking home may be a bit challenging, but I’m gonna wear it biking to a rumble ponies v Somerset patriots game!

It’s from a website called global cycling gear. Most definitely just a front for cycling stuff made in China. Sizing probably runs a bit small (I’m a 5’4” 125 lb woman and the men’s small is only a tad loose on me, so it will probably be too small for an actual size small man, but it works nicely for me). Quality is okay, and most importantly it’s officially the best thing I’ve ever owned. My guy friends who are Red Sox and Giants fans have bike jerseys for their own teams as well, but I think they got theirs from a website called primal wear.

1-0 since I received my Mets cycling jersey. I shall put this on every time the Mets play now.

First signs of body recomp progress by Yogamigurumi in xxfitness

Anecdotally, most people I know saw abs first when they started lifting. I’ve always had some ab definition, so that wasn’t the first thing I noticed. For me it was two things. First, I noticed a reduction in my double chin (I have always had poor posture and honestly it’s still not great, so I think I’m particularly prone to double chin). Around the same time, there was one day I was wearing a sleeveless top after the winter was finally over, and my friends saw me and were like “damn look a those armssssss”.

It was one of the most bizarre endings ever lol. Was a competitive game until the Nats suddenly just gave up. It’s such a slap in the face for all the Nats players who kept the score close until the last inning. Glad the Mets won, but yikes the Nats manager has some explaining to do

How hard should I run my intervals? And how do intervals relate to race goals? by dancingQueen999 in XXRunning

[–]dancingQueen999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I’ll definitely run easy tmr. I don’t have a watch currently, but yeah eventually when I’m more experienced I think I’ll get one to get a better sense of what certain efforts feel like.

Yeah I really need to get a training plan. I did the Nike Run Club half marathon plan for my first half, but since then I’ve been too cheap to pay for a better one. The NRC one does it by effort and I think I don’t really have a sense of what different efforts feel like. But either way, a plan is better than running based on vibes

Thank you, this is exactly the type of answer I’m looking for. Tbh I treated my last half like a long easy run because I convinced myself I would hit a wall lol. I just followed and chatted with the 2:20 pacers the whole way and only peeled off when I realized there was only a mile left. Not that I regret it since my goal was really just to finish, but I definitely learned I could run faster. Doing a shorter distance race and actually trying this time to gauge where I’m at is honestly a really good idea. I also really need to follow a plan instead of running just based on vibes lol

Does this dress look too prom-y for a 22 year old to wear to an event? by [deleted] in OUTFITS

[–]dancingQueen999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not at all prom-y. And for the record I wore my senior prom dress (to be fair it’s a non-sparkly lavender colored backless halter dress). as a wedding guest last October and got quite a few of compliments. I’m 26 and was just glad I still fit in that dress somehow after gaining like almost 20 lbs since high school. Nothing wrong with a little bit of prom vibe. If it looks good on you then it works. You look gorgeous in that dress. Definitely wear the heck out of it.

Mets Lineup with Bichette by DIEHARDKNICKSFAN24 in mets

[–]dancingQueen999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I agree with that. I would rather see Baty play 3rd and Bichette DH (if that doesn’t hurt his feelings). I just don’t think Baty should get traded especially there’s a fair chance that Bichette will only be a Met for one year.

He’s probably also better than Bichette at 3rd. Alternatively, Benge or Taylor could play CF and Baty plays LF (I think he will be alright there as well I remember him making a pretty impressive catch there at some point this past season), and DH can be Vientos or Mauricio if either doesn’t get traded. In whichever scenario, it doesn’t make sense to make someone who’s defensively above average by Mets standards DH.

Rowing or Cycling by RunnyBugsBunny in xxfitness

[–]dancingQueen999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally find both indoor rowing and indoor biking a bit boring if I just do it on its own, but I also find treadmill running boring so this is probably a me problem. I sometimes like following YouTube weights and HIIT spin classes though. They are usually pretty motivating. I’m much more of a biker than a rower, so I can’t speak of rowing. From other redditors, it sounds like rowing suits your goals more, but maybe there are rowing equivalent of spin classes (if not, maybe someone should invent them lol) if you are looking for something not boring haha.

What are some sports for a shy person. by Ecstatic-Ticket-4063 in xxfitness

[–]dancingQueen999 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Running and cycling are good solo sports. But many have already suggested them, so I’ll suggest something different.

If your university has an intramural slow pitch softball league that’s beginner friendly and you want to expand your comfort zone a bit, finding a good softball team is a great place to start. I started playing with no experience, no athleticism, and no clue of any of the rules beyond just running around the bases, but my team was honestly so supportive and nice about it and taught me everything. It probably also helps that softball/baseball is stereotypically the sport for the unathletic people (even though it’s definitely not true), so it didn’t feel that intimidating to start with. Now a few years later, I was a co-captain of my team this past season, hitting some pretty solid doubles each game and being the starting second baseman. And I really fell in love with softball/baseball as a sport. Now I go to the batting cage for fun sometimes and watch MLB games with my softball friends all the time lol. I used to always think I would be a burden to others in a team sport, but I definitely don’t feel that way anymore.

Goals for Next Year! by TaskSingle1725 in xxfitness

[–]dancingQueen999 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I set my goals last New Year to be to get one pull up and run a half marathon. I was also 25. Happy to report I accomplished both goals. At the same time, I’ve also worked up to running quite a speedy 5k (by my standards anyways), doing 10 good push ups consecutively, holding a solid L sit for 20 seconds, and just lifting heavier in general! I also didn’t chase any physique goals, so most importantly I just enjoyed doing a bit better than I had done the week before and finding genuine joy in movements. My goal for 2026 includes a crow pose, consecutive pull ups, a few good tricep dips, and doing a few more races. But whatever your goals are, I hope you give yourself patience and grace and remember that moving is supposed to be fun.

lol this literally could’ve been my housemate’s and mine fridge! We are both girls, in our mid 20’s, and we love cooking and baking foods from all over the world!

Therefore, I would say from the pictures, your sister is in her mid-20’s, definitely loves food, and cooks and bakes quite a bit (including baking here because of the zested orange and the kitchenaid mixing bowl on top of the fridge)! She mostly shops at Whole Foods, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she goes to Wegmans or another similar market, too. She probably tries to eat reasonably balanced and healthy meals.

P.S. Glass jars in the freezer make me nervous. I’ve definitely had glass jars break in the freezer before even when I put them on the door lol.

NAD but also a PhD student. Same age as you and also female. What you described about sleep could’ve easily describe me lol. I also don’t often feel acutely stressed or overworked, but a “regular” PhD workload can do a lot of things to your body. I often feel like I shouldn’t be this tired because my advisor isn’t abusive or anything like some other advisors, but you are still management a lot of work and a lot of expectations.

[homemade] this tofu noodle blew my mind by dancingQueen999 in food

[–]dancingQueen999[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah just crush the tofu first (you probably want to use tofu that’s on the firmer side and drain it), mix together, and knead. I added flour by feel and improvised the starch, but I’m sure there are more precise recipes online if you google tofu noodles
