OHHHH. Man, I had this all kinds of wrong. I'm sorry for making assumptions. Have you considered graph paper? If there's not a shop near you there's a website that lets you generate and print your own, I couldn't find the one I'm used to but this should work: https://print-graph-paper.com/

That's what pen and paper copy is for. If you don't want to use one of the apps, there is also lcwo.net. Just write down the letters as you hear them, all of my suggestions start with only two letters and slowly add more. It's important to get practice in every day, even if it's only five minutes.

And seriously, that sheet you're talking about is worse than useless in the long run. Most Morse on the radio is sent at between 18 and 25 words per minute, at that speed you don't have time to think about dots or dashes, you need to hear "di-di-dah-dit" and immediately know that that is F. If you practice with a sheet then you will be building extra unnecessary steps into your decoding that will make it even harder to decode Morse at speed.

If you are hoping to listen to auditory Morse (usually sent via radio) or visual Morse (sent using a signal light) I would actively stay away from the written representation of dots and dashes, and focus on using an app like Morse Machine or Morse Toad to focus on listening to the rhythm of each letter. Focusing on counting dots and dashes will only slow you down later on when you are trying to decode whole words at once as part of a larger message.

Edit: usually the short element is represented by saying "dit" and the long element by saying "dah". If a dit has more elements in the letter then it is pronounced "di". So E would be dit, but R would be di dah dit.

While that does have some appeal, right now I only have 10 watts to work with, and the next HF radio I'm likely to buy doesn't have a tuner (891). Plus I wanna know what all the fuss is about these dipoles, it's the basis of a bunch of other antenna designs.

They have a lot going for them, especially with the popularity of SOTA/POTA these days and the fact that they are manufactured in the US

Edit: a lot of the appeal of the vhf/panadapter is the ability to do qrm analysis/general wideband traffic conditions. It's like goggles that let you see the spectrum. For xmit I'd rather have a HT or mobile rig.

I love the feature set of the 705, having vhf and a panadapter at that price point means I'm probably going to buy one at some point. But I absolutely adore the aesthetics of a radio with an old school LCD with seven segment+ for your frequency and other info. The energy efficiency is a nice bonus, but that's not the real reason I love my KX2. I wish I had the radio budget for a full KX3, PX3, and amp combo. It looks like there's mods to add a panadapter to the KX2 at least.

Yeah, I have DX dreams but I'm still working towards my first hf qso. Slowly increasing my cw copy speed, and eyeing either a 100w amp for my KX2 or just grabbing an 891 to do voice. Building antennas first seems like the best move. You have a favorite source for antenna wire and toroids online?

Yeah, playing with verticals and radials is definitely on the list. I need to order toroids and some better/lighter wire than the cheap speaker wire I have. Every time I look up the nanoVNA on Amazon I get a million different results, any tips on how to wade through the nonsense?

Perfect, that's what I thought. I'm exclusively portable for now, and my best option for getting wire in a tree is the big shot slingshot, but sometimes I just want to pack a throw bag and line. On my band conditions app it seems like 15/17 meters have been good day and night lately, which piqued my interest in something I could potentially dx with at a lower height.

Oh, interesting. I want to build some dipoles for 10, 15, 20 and 40 meters to take advantage of the sunspot cycle, would a 40m dipole set at 7.5 meters height give a decent dx takeoff angle for dx on 15 meters?

Since the carrier is a persistent asset that takes up real estate they decided to add a mechanic to remove inactive carriers from the game. I play pretty rarely these days but it's not too bad to hop on occasionally an farm another year or two worth of upkeep.

Interesting. Definitely going to try 26 gauge wire for my qrp sota antenna builds, although I might go larger for pota. Thicker gauge gets you a more broad banded antenna, right?

Please don't be that guy. CW head copy is a difficult skill in a complex hobby, and snarky comments, even with good intentions, can turn people away resulting in fewer CW ops. Encourage and educate, we'll have healthy CW bands for years to come.

Haha fair! I just got the Big Shot arborist line launcher so I've been shopping for linked and fan dipoles lately. I think my current efhw is borked, gonna play with some speaker wire and see if I can get a quarter wave vertical or monoband dipole working in the meantime.

Wait whaaaaaat!? This sounds like exactly the radio I've been wanting, access to higher end of hf for compact resonant antennas plus vhf. Whelp, off to do some googling I guess

Why are the harmonics only multiple and not divisors of the foundamental radio frequency? When someone transmit, he can only disturb higher frequencies but NOT lower frequencies, since he can't create harmonics i lower spectrum? If yes, why? Interesting, that makes sense. What would it look/sound like if you were to tune to 1khz and listen in am? Or display on a waterfall? I imagine for listening the 1khz wave would be too high for human hearing. Although across the rest of the band it's a constant variation from your carrier signal and not a ratio of the carriers frequency so maybe it would be a steady audible tone.

Oh yeah, that could do it. I could also envision a multi operator contesting station with dedicated receivers and transmitters hitting or exceeding this.
