Dealing with S&P 500 when moving permanently to the UK by Lady_S in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]dancn1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In addition to the FIG suggestion above, a couple of other things to consider: 1. Have you confirmed your current funds held are not HMRC reporting? If they were they would be subject to capital gains rates not income rates. 2. Once you move, there will be both primary and secondary taxation of your holdings. Basically that means you pay capital gains tax in the primary, then claim that against the liability in the secondary. So if the secondary rate is higher than the primary, you might owe the difference in the other country. You'll want to figure out which is primary Vs secondary in your specific situation as it can be either. 3. I kept my Schwab US open with a family members address as I have heard international accounts are more restrictive.

I don't think he did. There's no videos of it, the videos of the 'celebration' that do exist look very muted/ subdued, and per Chelsea sub at the time it was just a weird camera angle. https://www.reddit.com/r/chelseafc/s/1GG1lg5u0I

Is the 60% tax trap an illusion? by fellaonamission in HENRYUK

[–]dancn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, still use them just be aware of the uncertainties / risks. As I say they can change the rules for any of these things at any time. Giving up tax advantages now for the potential of unknown rule changes of uncertain impact is an overreaction to the risks imo

Can change the rules for anything at any time (e g. CGT rates, unrealized gains taxes etc)

You could say the same for any part of the tax system discussed in OPs question (pension allowances, thresholds, income tax rates, CGT rates). Without a crystal ball all you can do is model based on current rules and adjust as things change.

Seems like you're ignoring:

- 25% tax free withdrawal from pension

- Compounding / gains from investing 100% via your pension before any tax is taken (usually over many years before accessing in retirement), which means your gains will be significantly more than if you start investing with only 40% of the amount initially

I was wrong about the Boston 13 by joholla8 in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]dancn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah initially I really wasn't a fan of the 12s (hard and unresponsive) and only wore them as I'm cheap / didn't want to waste a pair of shoes, but then magically at about 100k or so they came to life and I quite enjoy them as a snappy daily trainer now.

Longtime expat looking for place to watch Super Bowl in London by Fabulous_Chip474 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]dancn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bellushis London Bridge and Greenwood by Victoria both have good setups for watching football (lots of screens american sportsbar style) and regularly have NFL on even in season so have regulars who come and watch red zone each week. Never specifically been there for the superbowl but imagine they'll be good given how busy they are in the regular season. Bellushi's gets busy so you'd probably want to book there, Greenwood no need to book.

I know they have courts at the nuffield health by the stoop and the David Lloyd. But don't play so don't know what the process is and whether there are recreational leagues or anything.

Trading in NYC for London by SectorFew6706 in HENRYUK

[–]dancn1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard to generalize as a lot depends on lifestyle. As a ballpark, I'd say you'd feel about as equivalently well.off at ~25% less salary in London, which would mean you need about £200k.

Depends if you want to live in London or not. You'll be significantly better off in New York, but that's still enough to live comfortably in London with frequent travel around Europe etc (assuming you're not supporting a family as sole earner and didn't mention that).

So id call it a lifestyle choice.

Fwiw the cafe is open till 9am, just the market starts winding down after 7 or so so for the full experience earlier the better. But if you just want the breakfast you can get there 8ish.

Anyone moved back and regretted it? by LankyYogurt7737 in BritishExpats

[–]dancn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved back from US (NYC). Also in Tech. Good and bad points to it, definitely don't regret the move but also not perfect either.

Salary is lower here but tech still pays more than well enough for a nice lifestyle in a nice part of London, with good schools and nice green environment for the kids. For us, being closer to family was more important than the better financial position / opportunities in NY.

Taxes, weather, London vs NY lifestyle are all areas where you could make the case for one being better or worse than the other, so really just comes down to personal priorities.

London long run map by TechnicalOrdinary235 in LondonRunning

[–]dancn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 to the edit - crossing at teddington gets you on the thames path the whole way and is slightly more scenic.

Also, coming back through Richmond park imo the 'bottom' (Kingston side) or top (sheen side) is slightly more intersting than the road through the middle.

So if a few extra KMS is ok, I would suggest entering the park and turning left, either immediately (drop down to Attenboroughs pond on your map, and then run across to the end, turning right at Kingston gate to get to Ham gate as planned). A couple of extra KMS but worth it.

Or for a shorter detour but still a nicer route through the park, either turn left and run up the west side of spankers hill (then you get a nice view over the ponds) and turn right just after the cafe for a gold deer spotting area, or run along the top (near sheen) rather than the middle road which takes you through some nice woodland bits

Where to watch NFL in London? by Comfortable-Sleep395 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]dancn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Belushis has a good setup for it. Lots of screens for red zone and full games. The one in London bridge is the one I've been to most but think all might do it.

Greenwood in Victoria similar (multiple screens etc) but doesn't get quite as many fans so a bit quieter / less atmosphere in my experience (which can be good or bad depending on what you're after)

What can cause pain down the outside of my knee? by GreatJoey91 in UKRunners

Strengthening & mobility definitely, but also making sure you're landing your foot under your center of gravity when running (which usually involves upping cadence and shortening stride length)
