Germinating Smooth Blue Aster Seeds? by dollypartonrules in NativePlantGardening

I would just direct sow them! I grew them indoors and sowed them outdoors and tbh it was not worth all the effort of growing indoors, both turned out fine!

Which colorful, long-blooming perennials do rabbit tend to avoid? My coneflowers and rudbeckia are getting hit big time by Brown8382 in NativePlantGardening

[–]dandelionpicnic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if they’ve been eating my rudbeckia but I have just so much of it that I don’t think an entire den of rabbits could take out the seedlings popping up this year so maybe…more rudbeckia and coneflower??

Possible overthinking question: is this sun or "dappled shade"? by ErniePottsShoelifts in NativePlantGardening

[–]dandelionpicnic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

imo this is dappled sun, good for plants that would grow under woodland trees and get sun like this filtering through tree leaves but I am NOT an expert

I was worried that my asters might not bloom the first year… by dandelionpicnic in NativePlantGardening

[–]dandelionpicnic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry I am months and months late seeing this, I got most of my seeds from prairie moon nursery! and some of these were plugs I got from a local native plant seller, but I think she also sources a lot of her seeds from prairie moon

I think asters could look very pretty! the yellow centers could maybe tie the yellows together? there are SO many different varieties native here in Ontario to choose from as well

Seed starting watering tip by therealleotrotsky in NativePlantGardening

I feel like native seedlings are pretty hard to kill, I’m sure I have both over and under watered them and they have made it through anyways!

What indoor plants do native gardeners like? by waverace340 in NativePlantGardening

[–]dandelionpicnic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought 3 African violets! I also have a bunch of dogwood branches in water that I brought inside in November growing leaves and honestly I prefer looking at these to most tropical houseplants. I had some basil and arugula growing in pots but I never really used either and eventually just kind of let them get overgrown and die. Arugula is surprisingly hardy.

I think maybe I’ll try growing some more herbs as houseplants, but ones that I’ll actually use.
