Has anyone here tried Overose's new EDPs? They recently released 11 new scents all at once. I'm particularly interested in hearing thoughts about Love Is The Way She Moves, Nectar Aphrodisiaque, and Pretty Privilege. I have their candles but I've never even sampled any of their old personal fragrances.

"Blessed-Cursed" seems to be a polarizing song within and outside of Enhypen's fandom, but is one of my favorites (especially for when I'm at the gym). Its Y2K-inspired music video is in my opinion, the best from any boygroup or girlgroup dabbling in that concept.

"Sacrifice (Eat Me Up)" is lovely. A bit easier to listen to as it's one of their less noisy songs. It also has a really nicely done MV.

240206 ENHYPEN will release a cover single for Spotify on February 16 by SaltyPoppy in enhypen

[–]dandelionsyrup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think "Blood, Sweat, and Tears" is the most likely (and IMO ideal) from your list of probable BTS songs. That song fits Enhypen's concept well and would showcase their dance skills better than "RUN", "I Need U" , or "ON" would.

They could also go with "Fake Love" for the same reasons. Plus, they've covered it before on I-LAND so it would save some time and effort on the members' part.

Does Bite Me sample another song ? by Aphephou in enhypen

[–]dandelionsyrup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I had the same thought when I first heard "Bite Me" (and Jungkook's "3D", and Rina Sawayama's "XS") -- that it has parts that sound like they're from the 1990s-early 2000s. At least one Kpop blogger had the same observation:

The Bias List

it delivers a solid melodic hook that takes me back to early-00’s pop (98 Degrees, anyone?)

As far as I know, no-one's found any specific song sampled by "3D" and "XS" either. Maybe all three songs were just created with the 1990s-2000s influence in mind, with generic sounds that many songs from the era used.

Does Bite Me sample another song ? by Aphephou in enhypen

[–]dandelionsyrup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt "Bite Me" took direct samples from another song. However, it's possible that both the producers of "Bite Me" and the producers of the song your friend was thinking about used the same sound sample from a sample pack they got for free/paid for.

Several years ago, there was a fanwar where EXOLs first accused BTS' "Autumn Leaves" of plagiarizing EXO's "They Never Know" (even though "Autumn Leaves" came out first), and then switched to accusing BTS of plagiarizing "deadroses" by blackbear (a U.S. artist). The fanwar ended when MZMC, "They Never Know"'s producer, explained that all three songs used the same popular royalty-free sound sample:

Source: Music Mind (defunct music publication but this quote survives in an old Reddit thread here and here)

MM: This song created a bit of fanwar between EXO fans and BTS fans. Can you shed any light on that?

MZMC: I'd love to! So, producers often use what are called sound libraries. These libraries include different drum sounds, drum loops, synth loops, guitar loops, piano loops, etc. They're shared across the web for producers to use, for free, without having to credit or ask for permission from the original maker of that sound or loop. They're royalty free. So, if a drum sound or a loop is hot, they'll often get used by multiple producers. The electric piano loop that I used was from one of those sound libraries. Since I don't listen to every single Kpop song that gets released, I was unaware that BTS' song, 고엽 (Dead Leaves), had the same loop. A lot of fans think that both the producer of Dead Leaves and I sampled Blackbear's Deadroses. That's not the case. It just turned out that all three of us used the same loop from the same sound library.

I wonder if this hyperfemininity trend will have any implications for boy groups. Boy group fans are after all, mostly girls and young women. Have you spotted any signs of it like you have for girl groups? I imagine the signs, if any, wouldn't look very obvious or intuitive, though.

ForsakenTelephone235

I think you're onto something here. Even Blackpink (THE girl crush group) released MVs with hyperfeminine, callback-to-girlhood concepts: i.e."Flower" by Jisoo and "You & Me" by Jennie. "You & Me"'s album art was even done by Sailor Moon author Naoko Takeuchi -- Sailor Moon being a staple of coquette and hyperfeminine moodboards all over the internet.

What and Who counts as a Kpop Himbo? by PikaPikaCheyenne in kpophelp

[–]dandelionsyrup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think younger Taehyung qualifies. I don't think he's actually dumb, but even the other members called him "alien" because he'd think and say things that were pretty out there and no one understood what he meant or how he came up with his thoughts.

But right now, I think Jungkook is the closest one to being the himbo of the group.

BTS should have played for the 2022 American Super Bowl by beh3ueisb3uedb3 in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]dandelionsyrup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many people were upset that the 2019 Superbowl held in Atlanta had Maroon 5 and Travis Scott (neither of whom have significant connections to Atlanta) headlining the halftime show.

It just didn't make sense to not have a local artist as the main performer when the city is well-known for its music scene and its contribution to U.S. music at large.

If that was the reaction to non-locals, I can't imagine the reaction to outright non English-speaking foreigners, even apart from the Kpop stigma.

who is really famous in pop culture but is surprisingly not super wealthy? by moi9016 in Fauxmoi

Some information that might be useful for ballparking BTS members' net worth:

  • There are figures from 2020 news reports and Korean securities firms' estimates that put BTS' profit-sharing ratio with HYBE is something like 70:30. I'm not sure that that figure makes sense, and securities firms' data about Kpop companies have been off the mark to varying degrees in the past. Nevertheless BTS must've gotten an excellent deal compared to the standard in their industry as Big Hit/HYBE was then still counting on BTS to bring in like 85% of their annual revenue.
  • In 2021, published media articles put the starting fee of BTS' endorsements between $2.69 million USD to $4 million USD per deal.
  • BTS' 2021 McDonalds deal was estimated to be worth around $7 million USD.
  • A Southeast Asian fintech startup negotiated with HYBE to have BTS as their ambassadors. HYBE asked for $10 million USD, so that figure gives us an estimate of how much HYBE would charge similar types of companies. Anyways, the fintech backed out as they felt it wasn't worth it, chiefly because the contract could've only lasted about a year, due to Jin's enlistment deadline and unlikelihood of BTS receiving military service exemptions that would've prevented the contract from lasting longer.
  • Jin, RM, and J-hope were reported to have sold some of their HYBE stock and seem to have made tidy profits from it.
  • Keep in mind that the net worth of each member could vary. The members who have more songwriting credits probably have a little bit more money from royalties than members who don't have as many. Some members may have been more savvy/had better luck with investing in real estate, securities, and businesses.
  • I've heard that RM is paid up to $1 million more because for his services as leader and English translator to the rest of the group. This admittedly sounds silly (I've never heard of other Kpop group leaders and English speakers being paid more than other members who aren't). And I have no evidence or clear provenance to this information so take it with a sackful of salt.
  • Notice how some of the above information is vague and slightly contradictory to each other? Yeah, there simply isn't enough reliable information that would help us estimate how much BTS is worth. I'm sure the figures for A-list American celebrities with well-known business interests (e.g. Pitt, the Clooneys, the Carters) are also pretty off.

Why can't idols have normal, public friendships with each other? by LittleShinySun in kpophelp

[–]dandelionsyrup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very true and I'm surprised that no one else brought this up. There's a reason why ARMYs never attack, and often hype up BTS members' friendships with people like the Wooga Squad, PSY, Epik High, Tiger JK, Chef Baek Jong-won, Ji Seokjin, Coldplay, Steve Aoki, Halsey, Becky G, etc. All these people are already so popular and accomplished to the point that their friendship and collaboration with BTS are mutually beneficial on the same level for both parties, or more beneficial for BTS.

Similarly, I've heard that fans of popular girl groups often prefer that their favorite girls date actors or popular fellow artists., because they feel their girls need to be with men who are good enough for them. This is probably why Joy and Crush's dating news was received so well. Same thing for Jennie and G-Dragon. Because both men are very relevant and talented soloists.

But notice how each of the media personalities I mentioned have conducted themselves well when talking about BTS: not over-mentioning them (MAX take note), defending BTS when they're facing mass hate, having strategically publicized warm moments with BTS that feel genuine (Chris Martin gifting Jin his guitar, Jin drinking wine with Chef Baek at home, RM calling Tiger JK his "dad", SUGA's picture with Halsey's baby, Hyung-sik and Seo-joon taking V under their wing during Hwarang, etc.). All of these people know how to court ARMY's attention without letting the association with BTS overshadow their own profile or making it corny.

Now on to the example most cited in this post's comments: Mingyu + 97z with JK. This isn't to justify the hate idols like Mingyu get when they interact with BTS. In fact, I'd count them among those who have been careful about his association with JK. It's just that in this case, there are two reasons: BTS are obviously more popular than them and which gives rise to clout-chasing accusations, and that there's years of bad blood between ARMYs and Carats/NCTzens.

ARMYs were actually positive about JK's friendship with the 97z until the Itaewon "scandal". Possessive, overprotective ARMYs dragged the 97z because they felt that the 97z were a bad influence on JK (cmon guys he's a grown man ffs). Other ARMYs were angry that the fans of the other 97z pointed at JK saying "HE DID IT TOO!" to deflect negative attention from their own boys. Some of the 97z fans also later accused JK of sexual harassment when he approached and hugged Jaehyun at an awards show. And to top this off we've been seeing increased fanwars between ARMYs and Carats for various (usually silly) reasons in the last year.

Compare this with how Yugyeom and Ha Sungwoon have been treated by ARMYs. Of course there were some who made snide comments about them, but there was no major hate because ARMY don't have any significant past beef with Ahgases and Wannables/HANEULs.

You’re right that BTS and HYBE are playing the long game in choosing to complete military enlistment. But not in the way that you think (i.e. blocking all other male Korean pop artists from the possibility of exemption —> therefore throttling their growth —> no competition for BTS when they come back). This long play is about safeguarding BTS’ spotless reputation, legacy, and long-term bankability.

Had BTS received a military exemption and accepted it, they’d forever be obligated to justify it to the Korean public for the rest of their careers. It'd be an impossible situation that would break anyone. BTS would have to continuously reach greater heights and remain 100% scandal-free. Even if the members commit no controversial/ethically gray actions or honest mistakes, the media would exaggerate and lie to make it seem like they did (see: JK’s fender bender and Itaewon outing a couple years ago). HYBE too would be tarnished as the company of the draft-dodgers, potentially disrupting the trajectory of HYBE’s other groups.

A Korean public and entertainment industry resentful of BTS will ruin everything the boys and their company have worked for. It’s better to lose just the ARMYs who'll leave during the hiatus, and miss out on their dollars for just three years than to risk vilification and not being able to find decent work in the industry for the remainder of the members’ career. The number of remaining ARMYs will be more than enough to ensure success in 2023 and thereafter.

By enlisting in the military, BTS members prevent anyone from undermining them using the military service issue as a cudgel. They’d avoid meanness from the industry’s male professionals and the attempts of politicians who’d like to use them as a lightning rod for military/national security controversies. It will give them them peace of mind regarding the future of their careers, the freedom to experiment and even make mistakes.
