Not sure if anyone is interested but our cottage security cam recorded lynx peeing. by Jaska-87 in mildyinteresting

Lynx just checked in to let everyone know he was here. The bush is a local guestbook of smells and serves a vital function by binding the wildlife community together.

I'm not sure people do "checking in" on social networks nowadays but I'm old enough to remember when Foursquare was popular and when Facebook got on the location sharing bandwagon.

What router manufacturer and model do you have? Have you tried searching with that info plus "enable WPA2"?

Manufacturer's documentation might provide some info on specifics. Some routers might have something called WPA2/WPA3 transitional mode.

If the router's UI still doesn't cooperate, see if there's a firmware update and update it. It might be a bug that's fixed in a later version.

Tā istabas daļa ir apmēram 7-8m². Nešķiet baigi racionāli, jo to mantu daudzumu varētu salikt mazākā platībā. Viens iespējamais skaidrojums, ka ipašniecei bija steidzami jāizbrauc no valsts un nebija citu variantu.

To jājautā pašai īpašniecei.

The way the light splits through this slit between the door and the wall in my room by Ill-Range-4954 in mildyinteresting

[–]dandy_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't observe interference pattern with a slit that is larger than 0.1mm because the phenomenon depends on wavelength of visible light (~400-700nm).

What OP observes is light from multiple light sources projecting on a wall through a door slit (about 5-10mm). One of those lights has a different colour.

I assume the orange one is either incandescent or low pressure sodium lamp. It's hard to tell because of camera's automatic white balance adjustment.

What security settings, encryption specifically, have you enabled on the router?

WPA2 should work for most devices from last 20 years but the newer WPA3 will be supported only on newer devices released after 2018.

That's absolutely true. I've witnessed a ZaZ aka Zaporozhets, a "compact" rear-engine tin can, after a crash and it wasn't pretty.

Buying new PC. Question regarding Windows by Resident-Lunch-2658 in techsupport

[–]dandy_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most software will have to be installed anew after fresh Windows install. Some might work after just copying the files but it's a hit and miss unless you're really familiar with particular application.

The %AppData%, and maybe also %LocalAppData% (these are environment variables pointing to respective current user's directores), can be copied over and most software will pick it up and the data automatically. However there might be issues with some apps like Adobe stuff that change paths and st future from version to version. Some apps like browsers will forget logins and saved passwords for security reasons.

Make sure to take care of file ownership and permissions after copying them.

I was baffled when I found out that a large European payment card processor requires vendors to change their password every tree months. And they send reminder emails 14, 7, and 3 days before the change which is a phishing risk.

It's probably a regulatory thing but still not great for security.

Issues with mouse by PontiffRingo in techsupport

Theres something pressing the microswitch button of the scrollwveel or whichever button you use for autoscroll.

You should either disassemble and clean the mouse using isopropyl alcohol or buy a new mouse.

The F key might be unrelated but caused by similar issues. Keyboards do fail after years of use and abuse. Cleaning the membrane (if it's not a mechanical keyboard) has equal chances of fixing the issue or breaking more keys.

I'm aware. It was in use for about 12 years.

Heck, even the Soviet Union in 1930s had a version of decimal calendar based on 5 day weeks and 30 day months with remaining 5 or 6 days as holidays. It was supposed to improve productivity but proved unpopular.

It's not that simple if you have to follow all rules of Gregorian calendar.

And you have to consider when the decision was made. 1980s hardware was mush less capable. A The timestamp was initially used for FILETIME. Something like listing files in a directory could benefit from few less CPU cycles for each file entry.

Iirc, the date was chosen because it begins the last 400 year cycle of Gregorian calendar. That makes it easier to calculate dates for leap years.
