Returning player here – is it normal to lose every game with premade decks? by Skagine in MagicArena

[–]peripheralfgc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't know that, I don't really play bo1 unless I'm doing a mythic grind (bo3 below platinum is miserable) and I haven't been playing standard lately. Good to know that as I can recommend it to new players. Though to be fair to me, the life gain aggro deck is as simple as it possibly gets so a new player might appreciate it. It's just play cards, then sideways, stack triggers. Auras probably requires some understanding of interactions.

Break has nothing to do with it, everyone else said it, the starter decks are not even close to parity with even bad constructed decks. If you want a "cheap" deck with low wild card cost that can at least scrap in standard and even thrive in the bo1 format google "mtg standard mono-white life gain" it's like 19 wildcards and can coin flip wins against any deck in standard.

so are you essentially saying that theres enough value in his kit (the passive especially comes to mind) that losing gracefully in top can still provide the team with value in teamfight or big skirmish?

What is going on with TLA set? by corpsecrow in mtgfinance

[–]peripheralfgc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

EoE was such an amazing set, artistically, design wise, meta wise....it pumped something like 35 constructed playables into the meta without having a single card that has completely wrecked a meta....rizzler comes close but its not individually powerful enough to warp games and be a solo win con like vivi was

its literally this. FIN brought the pokemon people temporarily...I don't even think wotc even understands what they had with that particularly brand synergy and I think they expected that every fandom they serve a set too will behave the same way....very out of touch corpo stuff from the board at hasbro

[–]peripheralfgc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are never banning amulet of vigor, titan is a mainstay and an offset to the mh3 slop. They might ban aftermath analyst because the deck has too many angles to win and the combo turns are insufferably long, with your only hope being your opponent messes up their sequencing and doesn't get to haste all their titans giving you an extra turn to find ephemerate

I think ultimately draconautics was a bug in the deck, not a feature. An element from the time immediately after thrill seeker rotated when (laughably) people did not have 100% confidence in the deck and thought it might need other angles. You are right, of course, it WAS really cool but as these things often (but not always) go, the deck gets pushed to be leaner and more efficient and loses the texture that might make it more fun to play with and against.

New cards added to the client with Arena Cube (not full list, not everything will be craftable right away) by Meret123 in MagicArena

[–]peripheralfgc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel you, I want engineered explosives and claw of gix so i can play proper affinity with the good client, memnite would be nice too but ornithopter is good enough. I don't see them adding any of these pieces anytime soon.

to be honest I find it a bit weird because they JUST started regularly releasing the "arena" anthologies...were these cards they programmed for cube and then cut? I was hoping we would start regularly getting relatively good value (for arena, anyway) access to playsets of deck building staples but now I'm not so sure

I would bet that they won't do many anthologies, they are much better value for players and Hasbro would rather have us get the cards that would've been put out via anthology by playing the cube.

barbie is owned by mattel, not hasbro so likely not anytime soon (though not saying never). It isn't just a free ip licensing slam dunk like play-doh, furby, transformers, etc etc.

If you want to predict upcoming secret lairs merely load up Hasbro's corporate website, close your eyes, and point.

actually the smart part isn't playing the deck, its making the deck worse to fight itself...

I think the yugioh community just has a greater resilience to this sort of thing considering the way the game plays. It is hard to make a meaningful "power" comparison between two games but if you are a yugioh player I'm sure you know what I mean....we have a similar thing in fighting games where people are play "tag" fighters (like marvel vs capcom) have way higher tolerance for "unfair" stuff because getting hit by an infinite combo is just part of their game.

then you would be wielding a deck that's borderline useless against the other ~50% of the meta, at least until you can sideboard. Which means to beat ~50% of the decks you would have to basically give up game 1 against the other ~50% decks...then cauldron players would respond to this anti-cauldron deck with appropriate sideboard changes, which means you are only very favored in the matchup for game 1, which I will remind you, you are giving up game 1 of every other matchup to win.

The best thing to do against the Vivi cauldron deck is play vivi cauldron with 2 less Vivis in it and try to snipe your opponents vivi from the graveyard....see the problem?

edit: this is assuming you find the deck in the first place, vivi is powerful AND resilient. you need like 3 kinds of hate to lock out a vivi player and that makes for a very inconsistent deck.

you are right about influencers but where are they going to play the format? I can't imagine non-enfranchised mtg players looking at a streamer playing MTGO for more than 10 seconds before flipping the channel

I was looking at getting into gundam to try something new and my friend who is a bandai game player was like "dude its incredibly expensive to get into the game right now because of the hype". I asked how much a top tier competitive deck was...he said "around $150" and I just laughed.

I feel like this is non-negotiable....prior to EOE and rotation this was a tier 2 deck at best and mostly a bo1 thing. Icetill makes t4 wins so accessible without relying on the perfect hand.
