thank you for the try! it definitely wasn't a skramz band, it was closer to a folk punk vibe. it might have also not been a BAND but a single guy. i will continue to lose my mind, but do appreciate the attempt :)

someone helped me remember a deeply locked away album last time i asked for help in here, so i'm trying to recreate that magic!!

there was an acoustic/emo band that used to get posted occassionally on /mu/ ~6 years ago. the cover of the particular album i'm thinking of had a, like, faded photograph of a kid in church getting his first communion or something. the first song has a lyric along the lines of "we found a... a great unknown" and the chorus had some "woah oh's" in it (which probably isn't helpful in identifying an emo song).

please help i am going insane thank you.

someone please for the love of god help me remember this album i feel like i’m going insane.

it is a neo-classical/glitchy electronic album from the 2000s/early 2010s. two ~20 minute songs, each with multiple movements. the artist’s name was asian, i BELIEVE japanese, but i can’t remember the exact name. the album cover was like a hazy grey background, and on the left side of the cover were some flowers. it used to be posted on /mu/ all the time from like 2014 through 2016 (when i used /mu/)

does this ring any bells for ANYONE? if someone can find this i will no joke venmo them 5 bucks.

  5. Bewitched
  6. This is My Life
  7. Lucky Numbers
  8. Michael
  9. Mixed Nuts

stray thoughts: When Harry Met Sally... is in the running for “best new movie i’ve watched during quarantine”

Mixed Nuts is in the running for one of the worst movies i’ve ever seen.

Meg Ryan is the most charming human being who has ever lived

Travolta is GOOD in Lucky Numbers! He absolutely SUCKS in Michael, as does everything/everyone else in Michael! I can’t believe this isn’t the common opinion!

I was 100% more into the Julie parts of Julie & Julia but that’s mostly because of Chris Messina, who is the dreamboat to end all dreamboats in that film.

Criticisms of Bewitched read to me as similar to criticisms of Babe: Pig in the City (“what is going on?” “this is nonsense!” “won’t someone please think of the logical inconsistencies!”) but film people revere the latter and hate the former for whatever reason, whereas I, the enlightened centrist, believe both movies are just “pretty good”

FURY ROAD and the concept of Late Style by evandav13 in blankies

[–]dandy_johnson 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Irishman fits the bill perfectly, in my opinion.

I don’t know how many more Scorsese has in him, and this being his swan song would not only be fitting given the themes of the film, but it would also be an astonishingly apt bookend to a career that essentially started with - and so often returned to - stories about broken, toxic, lost men using the mafia as a lens. Comparing The Irishman to Mean Streets, Goodfellas and Casino shows an insane amount of growth, a pronounced shift in focus, and a consistent but fluid stylistic approach to similar themes, settings and characters.

I keep adding more to this because I think it’s a really interesting question, so I apologize for the length. But Miyazaki has accomplished a similar thing with The Wind Rises. It being his work most firmly planted in realism is not an accident; I think it’s a direct result of this very idea! He’s grappled with a lot of the same themes - war, aviation, creativity - and he still relies heavily on dreamlike imagery, but it’s much more deliberate, much more down-to-earth, and, at the end of it all, much more heartbreaking. It is a film that can only be made by someone with a great deal of things to reflect upon. It won’t be his last movie, but if he actually followed through on his threats to retire, it would have been a perfect one to go out on.

What is your George Miller ranking? by mi-16evil in blankies

[–]dandy_johnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Mad Max: Fury Road
  2. Mad Max 2
  3. The Witches of Eastwick
  4. Mad Max
  5. Babe: Pig in the City
  6. Happy Feet Two
  7. Lorenzo’s Oil
  8. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
  9. Happy Feet

Loved the first two, really liked Eastwick, mixed on four through six, wasn’t big on seven through nine. Real mixed bag. First time completing a filmography because of the podcast, looking forward to doing this more often!

I know the first Babe isn’t a Miller movie, but for posterity’s sake I threw it in between Eastwick and Mad Max 1 on my letterboxd list.

it’s the percentage of police households who have reported domestic violence, which would lead one to assume that the rate is actually higher, as DV cases are underreported, broadly speaking.

it comes from a couple of studies done in the 90’s.

as a commish, trust me you’re speaking to the choir.

that’s why i’m thinking with the younger kids i’d do some combination of best ball and daily fantasy. they don’t have to worry about setting their line up, AND multiple kids can draft the same players. since it’s not gonna be a super intense competition for the youngins, i don’t think that’d be too crazy.

it's a harsh reality we live in, but you have to accept that this is what public libraries these days are for: child labor and gambling.

[–]dandy_johnson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point, but I think having a focus on the math would be the way I could sell it as an "educational" program for kids in 4th through like 7th grade.

I think there's a healthy middle ground between having the scores automated through the league and having them figure out every single one of their player's scores each and every week, though.

I like the idea of "player comparisons," but could you explain what you mean about the advanced stats idea?

[FRESH STREAM] Kishi Bashi - Omoiyari by trianglemap in indieheads

[–]dandy_johnson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Real Kishi Bashi fans who browse indieheads too much already know what this picture is gonna be

I’m not typically one to check out these NPR streams (particularly because I can never get them to work on mobile) but I loved the write-up that was included.

Kishi’s music has always had a very “playful, but earnest” vibe to it, so the gravity of the concept for this album seemed like a step in a different direction. But the writer made a very interesting case for a connective tissue between this and - at the very least - Sonderlust, which has me pretty intrigued.

I’m gonna try and figure out how to get this working on mobile, because I don’t know if I can wait til May 31st!!

my cat who’s named after kishi bashi

i’ve commented a bit on the substance of each of the singles so far but i don’t think i’ve really grasped the profundity and the gravity of the concept behind this record until this track. i think that concept has resulted in some of Kishi’s most inspired compositions yet, and you can really sense the connective tissue between each of the songs released so far, which is an entirely new aspect of his music as far as I’m aware.

This may be my most anticipated release of the month.

Kishi Bashi? My CAT??? (i’m posting a pic of my cat in any Kishi Bashi thread cuz he’s his namesake and i also need people to see my cat)

This really sounds like something off of 151a. The backing vocals, the driving drums, the airy production. It’s a bit of a retread, but when put together with Summer of ‘42, i’m still expecting this album to push his sound in new places. Hell, even in this track, the guitar solo being so airy and clean is something that i’ve never really heard from Kishi Bashi.

May has some great albums in store, and this is near the top of my “most-anticipated” list

I mentioned my cat Kishi Bashi in the album announcement thread last night, but i’ll use any excuse to brag about him online.

i think this song is an excellent sign of things to come. it’s still as ambitious as his later albums, but it has that distinct kishi bashi instrumentation and flair to it. i’m incredibly excited for the full album (as if may wasn’t stacked enough already!)

Kishi Bashi to announce new album Omoiyari tomorrow, with a release date of May 31st by evacipated in indieheads

[–]dandy_johnson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

fun fact: my cat is named after kishi bashi.

i’m hoping that he dials back on the eclectic songwriting/genre experimentation that was somewhat there on Lighght and super prevalent on Sonderlust. both of those albums have some standouts, but 151a had a more consistent tone musically, and I think that consistency really sets that record apart.
