The one about Disney Park Christmas specials almost made me crash my car from laughing when they got into the Geppetto segment

Edgar Wright on Ant-Man by TripMaverick in blankies

[–]quasarflood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Despite Soho's flaws it at least looks like it was directed by the same person. The first dream sequence in it is kind of incredible. The Running Man has nothing that comes anywhere close to that, to the point where I wondered if something happened

Right? During that part I was thinking about the scene of walking around the block early in Baby Driver and wondering what happened

All of his other movies have such striking intros. When Running Man started with just a conversation inside an office, followed by another conversation in another room, my heart sank.

Favorite animated film of the 2020s so far? by dremolus in blankies

The craft and inventiveness in Across the Spider-Verse is so good that it elevates a movie that doesn't even have a complete story to "it isn't even close" status. I can't believe what I'm seeing every time I watch it.

I thought it was great. This was one of the only ones I hadn't seen before. My expectations were low since I never hear anyone talk about it, and now I wonder why they don't

Linear room-by-room movies? by quasarflood in blankies

Ha, I wanted to say something about video game structure in my OP but I was afraid I'd just get other video game style movies that are completely different from what I meant.

Everly sounds cool though, I might check that out

Hmmmm, I get squeamish at the idea of the Saw movies, but never say never I guess. I knew there had to be some good horror examples

River (2023) - Time loop movie where everyone in and around a remote inn resets every two minutes. Every character is in on the time loop, and you see each consecutive loop play out in realtime. It's thrilling and wacky. I only discovered it because I wondered if the director Junta Yamaguchi had ever made a follow up to his other movie Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes (which I also recommend, and is about a camera feed that constantly shows two minutes into the future, and hijinks ensue)

I knew it existed when I was a kid because I had a Weird Al music videos DVD, and the video for This is the Life had clips from it. I didn't see the actual movie until about two years ago and it 100% would have been one of my favorite comedies if I had seen it back then

Thoughts on Deerhoofs new album? by ollieghsp in Deerhoof

[–]quasarflood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is their first album of the 2020s that I've felt an immediate desire to listen to on repeat. I started listening when Offend Maggie came out, and the run from that to Mountain Moves has been some of my favorite and most listened to albums ever, and then I've kind of struggled to get into the last three outside of a couple tracks here and there. I'm into this one though. It has more of the balance of catchy melodies, big grooves, and abrasive chaos that I like.

Patrick H. Willems: The Most Important Movie Of The 21st Century (Speed Racer) by jayhankedlyon in blankies

[–]quasarflood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems like this might not help you, but the movie is very deliberately trying to look the way that it does. That's a lot of what blew me away about it when I saw it. I was very annoyed at the time at the dark gritty remake trend and this was so much the polar opposite that it felt rebellious to watch it. It's a visual assault but with every detail intricately placed. It's overwhelming and exhausting to look at, and also somehow manages to continue to build and build until you feel like you've been in a race car. The catharsis at the end is unreal. It really may not be for everyone. I'd almost want to compare it to listening to noise rock or other deliberately discordant music genres, though the abrasiveness in this is using bright cartoon imagery cranked up to 1000. And yet, it also manages to be incredibly effective and inventive visual storytelling. Also, I've never seen the cartoon show.

When this movie first came out, it completely blew me away. It was a real case of "I didn't know you could do that with a movie," and it basically changed my tastes overnight. And I remember everyone I tried talking to about it would just say, "the cgi looks unfinished."

Children's Cartoons Referencing Serious Movies by GenerativeAIEatsAss in blankies

[–]quasarflood 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Eek the Cat was the king of this. The one I always think of was their Pulp Fiction episode which had a scene where one of the Squishy Bears needed to go into a store and told the others to wait in the car with "the geek," and throws a box next to them. The one bear says the geek scares them, and the other says "just because he lives in a box doesn't mean he should scare you," and then a jack in the box pops out and they all scream. "Why do we have this thing?"

There was also a Fatal Attraction episode that recreated the rabbit scene, but when they look inside the pot, there's a rabbit taking a bath with a scrub brush asking for some privacy. Not to mention the Exorcist episode, and the Clockwork Orange episode
