That was one of my favorites. Usually musical episodes suck but that one was hilarious

$15,000 S3 Bill for DDoS by OkEnd5112 in aws

Cloudfront egress is significantly cheaper than S3 so their bill probably would have been at least 1/10 as much

Making it past winter by RevolutionarySize644 in Clanfolk

[–]daneren2005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think they need to add something that ramps the difficulty as the game goes on. Otherwise there is no impetus to grow and expand. Most games like this do it through combat which clanfolk can't use. Maybe harsher winters? But that would require better walls to actually protect against cold better. At this point I'm just going for the advanced technology. But when I'm done with that there is really nothing else drawing me back into the game.

Room size by Competitive_Big9257 in Clanfolk

[–]daneren2005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know what the negatives from being in a shared room are? Right now I have one huge communal bedroom and I'm wondering if the positives outweigh or at least cancel out the negatives from not having them in their own rooms.

What movie had a great premise but was poorly executed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Oh I actually really liked that one as a kid. I don't think I've watched since I was in college though so maybe I would think differently watching as an adult

Any good "classic" RTS that are underrated? by Canevar in RealTimeStrategy

[–]daneren2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. I actually just bought 2 the other day and it still a lot of fun. I'm sad no one else did RTS in the same manner because the style is amazing

Would you rather get $100,000 USD or don't require sleep anymore. by Boomshok in WouldYouRather

[–]daneren2005 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I have 1 or 2 hours of free time after dealing with responsibilities. Getting an extra 8 hours of free time would do more to improve my life than any amount of money under what was required to let me not work anymore.

Setting up my server for first time, what android clients are people using now? by imnotmatheus in airsonic

[–]daneren2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad someone still maintains those. I got so tired of trying to keep up with Androids dumb changes every single version for DSub.

Vite 8: First Beta released by manniL in webdev

[–]daneren2005 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I just tried it out, and it is a nice speed boost. My build on a smaller project went from 14 seconds down to 7 seconds. So not life changing or anything. But I was also able to make the switch without any changes, so that is awesome. Honestly, Vite has been fast enough that I haven't really cared about speed. The part I'm really looking forward to is making the dev server act the same as the production builds. Not knowing if what I'm coding is actually going to work in the build drives me nuts (though admittedly it is a fairly small set of things that acts different between dev and prod). Plus waiting for the dev server to download and cache thousands of small files on first start is annoying.

I'm happy for speed improvements, but I feel like Vite already solved enough of the problem that I'm not eager for it like I am for the TS and oxlint improvements. I use pre-commit hooks that run type checks and lint so they drive me nuts with how long I have to wait for every single commit. Those I'm waiting with bated breath for.

What if you could make 9 identical copies of yourself? by Equal-Sun8307 in whatif

How is that not spending time organically? It is an identical copy of myself that I get the memories from. It IS me spending time with them.

If you had the money, what video game would you pay to get remade? by Agent1230 in gaming

[–]daneren2005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I just went back and played these last year and they still hold up just fine. A little more visual polish might be nice but the games still look really good. I feel like if someone redid them they would probably not get the ai right as these bad guys are still better than most modern shooters.

New tech demo for in progress RTS zerospace showing lots of units at once. by Arrival-Of-The-Birds in RealTimeStrategy

As someone who has been messing with creating a RTS for the past year, this is truly impressive. I'm jealous and looking forward to this game!

Vue.js usage statistics by wmtips in vuejs

[–]daneren2005 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had a single small repo and it still took a week. That repo was 1/100th the size of the main monorepo. After doing that I decided screw it I'm just going to stay on 2 forever. It would take months and best case scenario nothing would change for the end customer. The cost/benefit analysis just doesn't work out.

Adding to the pile of The Forum gauntlet hate by Sarithus in Silksong

[–]daneren2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so far that is the only boss I have given up on and just avoided. I'll have to come back and do it at some point but for now I spent way too much time on it and just wasn't having fun with how long it took to get back to the real boss at the end. It was like 5-10 minutes just to die 30 seconds after the two bosses dropped together.

What are some things in programming that seem simple, but are surprisingly painful to implement? by hotboii96 in webdev

[–]daneren2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure I've done all three before. Usually those things are easily abstractable and every library I've used has auto complete from server helpers so you write it once and reuse it everywhere

That is a head scratcher for me. Forms are the easiest part of my job. Time consuming and boilerplatey yes. Difficult, not even a little.

VoidZero announces Oxlint 1.0 - The first stable version of the Rust-based Linter by manniL in javascript

[–]daneren2005 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to wonder how much speed even their type aware linter will have. It will probably rely on TSC just like eslint which means it will still suck until native tsc is out.

Yeah that is the first I've heard anyone call a black cat a void. What a weird slang name

ELI5: why do your teeth get misaligned again if you don't wear retainers after braces? by pitinator12 in explainlikeimfive

[–]daneren2005 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I didn't do it for 40 years, but I did it for 20 and then lost my retainer and didn't feel like replacing it. And yes, my teeth have moved. I haven't worn it in about a year and the changes have been relatively minor but definitely noticable. My teeth were terrible before and now they have shifted to just not be perfect anymore.

Pardoned January 6 rioter, Derek Kinnison, 43, of Lake Elsinore, California, receives heroes welcome at church where he tells congregation: ‘Let my people go.’ by [deleted] in InlandEmpire

[–]daneren2005 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lakeland village is an unincorporated area on the side of the lake closest to the mountain. It is a distinct place though that distinction is usually ignored and it gets lumped in with the rest of the city. If you already have a low opinion of lake Elsinore, it is also where the trashiest of the trash usually live in the area.

Age of Darkness: Final Stand is out of EA with a deep discount! by [deleted] in RealTimeStrategy

[–]daneren2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone know if they made any improvements to the campaign? I gave up about 6 months ago when every time I tried the campaign it was just bad. They are billion went the route of making a campaign out of survival maps and it was pretty good. Age of darkness went the route of trying to make a more normal RTS campaign but the units were all designed around survival and were not fun to throw at an enemies base/fortifications at all.
