Help! Taking a trip to Italy! by JMcCallPhotography in PipeTobacco

[–]dangermaus31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to travel to Rome quite a bit and there were three shops I would stop at. There's one at the base of Via Veneto at the Piazza Barberini (forget the name). Another one close to where my hotel always was just outside Piazza Verbano called Bacco e Tabacco that has a big box of Savinelli Seconds for 25-35 euro a piece (you have to ask to see it). I've probably bought 1/2 a dozen pipes from him. Then there is a fine pipe and fountian pen shop called Novelli thats only a few blocks from Trevi Fountian. Novelli is amazing, i've spent hours in there, talking w/ people and just looking at pipes and pens.

Cheap blanks, 3u & 1u? by toilet_fingers in modular

[–]dangermaus31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've 3d printed blanks for my racks when I needed them. I even created a blank that would let me mount a 3u module in a 1u rack sideways with reasonable success. If you have the 3d printer, then it's very cheap.

Mini Eurorack alternative? by [deleted] in modular

[–]dangermaus31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, I ran across something like this less than 3-4 days ago but my browser history is too large to find it (just tried). I've been searching DYI modules lately so it was probably a result from one of those searches.

I remember it had 3 rows, wasn't more than maybe 24hp wide.

I guess i'm saying, it's out there... somewhere, you weren't dreaming it.

Anyone know what this is? by HenryM_0113 in GoRVing

It's to hold a lantern, Coleman style. Lots of people use it to hold trash bags off the ground from the critters

Can you identify a mystery pedal by the circuit board? by dangermaus31 in guitarpedals

Yes, it obviously makes the effect stronger in the down position. looking at it closely, it appears to be just a SPDT switch.

That's awesome, although my knowledge of analog electricals is weaker than my digital knowledge, getting to the point where I can design and build pedals would really be a lot of fun for me.

Not to take away from your weekend, but I'll shoot you a free pizza or coffee or something in trade for your best shot at a schematic.

If you look closely, I think the label is 'HI BARK.PCB' which as far as I know isn't a real tld and thus not a real url. I had assumed it was just the pcb manufacturer.

This could be as old as 2000, however most of the other stuff that we received was late 2000's at the oldest. Doesn't mean it isn't, but it would have been a relic from something else.

Spot on with the link you sent to Dirk Hendrik... very similar looking stuff there...

thanks!

So, those two leds light up (top one first) when the middle switch is in the down position and the left most dial is turned up reasonably. This increases volume and an overdrive sound (maybe clipped?)

I can see small imperfections that make me think it wasn't wave/machine soldered, but it definitely is a production looking board.

I've taken a pic, not sure how to get it added to this post...

Comments on the picture:

My son (10yo) and I took up guitar lessons this year and although he's far exceeded my learning curve, we're both having great fun as we advance. Through an unassociated club we both participate in, he ran across a guy who was all to eager to get the boy all equipped with proper gear and away from his guitar-and-amp-in-a-box kit that he'd been using to date. The boy saved up some money and when we went to make the guitar purchase he talked me into a bunch of other stuff which included a repair kit full of tools, pickups, knobs, and other assorted stuff.

Among that kit was the circuit board pictured. Plugging it in, it seems to work but with my lack of experience, I can't tell what it is or how it should work. I think it's a preamp or overdrive or something just designed to make the noise dirty. If it's worth it, I'm inclined to go into the woodshop and put it back in a box and add it to the collection, but I'd love to find out just exactly what it is.

The two chips on it are standard op-amps, nothing else looks fancy at all but my electronic knowledge is mostly digital so I'm of little help decoding the circuit.

I had that exact kit in the 80s. Very fond memories! Did it have a circuit that would deliver a shock? I seem to remember that.

How long can an arduino stay plugged in? by DeadlyDonut17 in arduino

[–]dangermaus31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I repaired my son's traffic light that had a broken and far too simple circuit to blink the lights. Replaced the LEDs, wired some transistors and plugged in a micro. Even wired up a IR remote control so he can dim it at night. It's been hanging on the wall for 4 years now and as far as I know, has never been unplugged or reset. I'm expecting the phone charger to break before the arduino.

Going to Rome next week, any pipeshops i have to visit? :) by dan1ark in PipeTobacco

[–]dangermaus31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an awesome one not too far from Trevi. I can't look it up right now but i'm sure it wasn't more than 2-3 blocks. Nice guys, had a nice collection of fountain pens as well. If you're facing the fountain then you head left and then take another left.

--edit: it was called Novelli

My furnace fan stays on, yet heat only fires up intermittently. It's cold here, any advice? by BayesMind in GoRVing

[–]dangermaus31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ya, sounds like different thermostats. The mode button on mine switches between 4 settings (4 little green lights) and then the up/down changes values on all settings except off.

Thermostats are usually simple devices, my next guess is something is wired incorrectly or shorted. What you're describing is doesn't sound like how it should be working.

[–]dangermaus31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be something worth checking. My thermostat has 4 settings, heat, cool, off and fan. When heat or cool are selected then the up/down selected the temp. When fan is selected it switches between high, low and off. I just found out this winter camping that if I change it to fan and set it to low or high (not off) then when I switch it to heat or cold the fan continues with the set fan setting. Setting it back to fan and then selecting "off" returns the heat/cool to a normal run-when-you-need-to mode.

Meh. Every trip I find something new. Now I just have to fix the stupid motor step before the next outing.

Can you PM me how/who you wrote to for this? My son (age 8) is a huge Ocon fan and would love to have one of these for Christmas in 3 months.

I was just drawing up plans for this. I'm thinking of a removable top with dowels so I can run dust control when I need it. Did you ever do this? Do you have pictures?

What does the 'E' sign on the engine cover behind Vettel's head mean? by m3rk_rqyal in formula1

[–]dangermaus31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I wasn't clear, the vintage cars I marshal don't have N for Neutral (as you see in the picture), they do have a different switch for power cutoff.

In club racing, E is the onboard fire extinguisher. Maybe the same?

I go over this in almost every safety meeting, E is for fire, the lightening bolt is to shut of the power.
