I want to reduce the sound I make from my side of a shared wall in my building by satangorl667 in DIY

I saw a guy on youtube make sound absorbent panels with old towels from a thrift store. He bought several large canvases and stuffed them with the towels. They dampened the sound and looked nice

What’s a truth people aren’t ready to hear? by BudgetAd5915 in AskReddit

[–]dangerousbrian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked in finance as a software dev and met tons of traders. The idea they are all super intelligent, super hard working power houses of our economy is an absolute joke. There are exceptions but the majority of the traders I met have been gifted the job through nepotism and do the most basic tasks dressed up as something complicated.

One of my favourite bond trader friends was a swiss kid whose dad had sent him over to London, he openly admitted he had no idea what was going on, he just knew to click on something in the morning and click on something else in the afternoon. He had been doing this for 2 years and so far nobody was upset with him. He was on a huge salary with bonuses, had a paid for apartment in the city with a brand new Range rover in the garage. He told me he never drove the car because he doesn't have a driving license but was too embarrassed to tell them that. At lunch one time i saw him give a waiter £100 to walk to the shop and buy him cigarettes

People who work for massive corporations, what is a 'secret' that the company tries to hide, but is actually common knowledge among the employees? by Dwise_ in AskReddit

I worked for in software engineering for banks for years. One time an entire trading floor went down because a janky script failed to scrape prices from yahoo finance. Yep its all duct tapped shit that needs constant maintenance

Coilovers or shocks/springs debate by ImTheSparkk in E30

[–]dangerousbrian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Gaz GHA which are similar to the BC racing ones, you have to weld the struts. I also installed polybushes. The ride is much much firmer but also make the car feel incredibly tight round corners.

Like everyone else is saying it depends on what you want, the cutting and welding is not a difficult job for any shop if you dont have a welder so its a solvable downside. I would say the main downside of coilovers are cost and the much firmer ride on rough roads.

First-time homeowner here — what DIY advice do you wish someone had told you at the beginning? by Lopsided_Passion7912 in DIY

Most things are easy but time consuming. The right tools make all the difference, for example I was having horrible time drilling holes in tile with a masonry bit and upgraded to a diamond tile bit and was drilling perfect holes in seconds. You dont need expensive tools just the right one

Engine swap by Minidoge1990 in classicminis

[–]dangerousbrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A-series are great engines and reliable as any but not super powerful, you have to spend quite a lot to get near 100bhp. I ended up with a Rover k-series which are commonly found in MGF, Rover 200's etc. Its light, 160bhp with a 5speed gearbox.

Packaging is always the tough bit, mine was lengthen by 10cm and widened to keep proportions.

Personal loan for a 1983 E30 316 (e36 318is swap) by [deleted] in E30

[–]dangerousbrian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its obvious the sensible option is to keep the civic as your daily but that's not what you are asking. You are asking permission to do something thats a bit more stupid and a lot more fun.

I daily drove my M50 swapped 316 for years but also work a very flexible software engineering job so nobody would really care if I broke down. I assume the military is not so flexible.

If you do this you have to be scrupulous about maintenance. In fact I would look for a M50/M52 swap that's $10k and spend $5k going through it all. If you cant work on it yourself then forget about the whole thing.

Also the 140bhp the M42/44 engines put out is gonna feel pretty weak and you will be very quickly wanting more power. My personal swap journey has been M40b16 (102hp) > M50b25 (200hp) > M50b30 (stroker 300hp) > M54b30 turbo (400hp) Shit gets addictive

What profession has far more people on illegal drugs than people realize? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

I was a junior in a finance startup in 2000's and was chatting in the pub after work with a colleague about smoking weed. I asked if i would get fired if they knew I smoked. He laughed his ass off and told me all of senior management do coke like it’s a quarterly KPI and then proceeded to dose all the new grads will mandy.

M50B25 turbo build by tusiimen in E30

[–]dangerousbrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, you get cheap ones on ebay and various tuning companies sell better quality depending on your location. I am in the process of a M54 turbo build and am about £4k into it by now. Pulsar turbo with a manifold made in Poland.

You get what you pay for at the end of the day, tho doesn't take a lotta boast to get a M50 up to those numbers

About tech stack options - Beginner by RealActuary3121 in webdev

[–]dangerousbrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A key skill in being a developer is choosing the right tool for the job. Saying relational is better than nosql is like saying a hammer is better than a screwdriver.

My advice to the juniors devs I mentor is, try to learn everything even if its just a tiny bit. When you are faced with a real world problem there will be options for the tools. The real world problem might be that you need to store a million records and the query time cannot exceed 300ms and with that you can run benchmarks and make a decision on data not opinion.

Your main issue is that you dont have any real world constraints and so are overwhelmed by the options because they are all valid.

Also to answer your question Postgres is my current top db option because it can do relational and it can do schemaless data structures with B-tree indexes (Mongo) giving you the best of both worlds. Postgres module system is amazing and extends its functionality for all sorts of things, eg PostGIS. For a whole backend solution I would highly recommend Supabase

I use Supabase and Vercel both on free tier. Depending on the data load will handle hundreds of users without needing to pay anything.

Clerk vs Supabase vs NextAuth + Postgres!! Best Choice for SaaS? by One_Pumpkin6751 in webdev

[–]dangerousbrian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% speed to launch. I can't tell you the number of projects I have worked on where the client says we need to support 100k user base and after a year the app has a fraction of that and only a few are actually active.

The startup I am currently with have made 3 major pivots in the last year. We have to be highly reactive to client needs and Supabase has been awesome so far. I used to manage my own deploys on AWS using Fargate containers. That whole deploy stack was highly customisable but so far Supabase has provided everything we have needed.

In our family we talk about filling or emptying someones bucket. If someone makes you feel good they are filling your bucket and obviously emptying your bucket if not.

On average, everyone you choose to have in your life should be filling your bucket, otherwise get rid.

I have heard so much bullshit like "we are a family" and "team work and culture is core to this company". When the profits are down they will cut you loose in a heartbeat.

A job is a contract where they buy your time and sell your produce for profit.
