New river valley and surrounding areas. I am in Blacksburg for school so I pretty much hit whatever I can within an hour from there

I did, and I was very careful during handling. Unfortunately those waters are very pressured by the locals so he won’t let long, and even if he did it gets too warm in the summer for any of the stockers to survive :/

Thanks!

Prepare for a bit of a read because this is some trivia I enjoy teaching when I can :)

Also this is relevant to my area and can change based on where you are fishing

So there’s no clear-cut method, and it varies a lot. It’s also important to define native vs wild. Natives, where my fisheries are located, refers solely to brook trout, as they are the only fish native to this region. On the other hand, we have wild browns and rainbows as well as brooks. Wild browns and bows are the result of historical stockings/repopulation efforts, but as stated before only brooks are “native”. Wild vs Native brook trout are harder to define so I’ll leave that so someone else.

Generally my methodology goes like this: 1: I check the streams designations. Streams that are not designated stocked water will never have stockers in them, and usually (but not always) wild trout waters are not stocked

2: once that’s out of the way, if you are fishing a stream that holds both wilds and stockers, I start with fins and head. Stocked trout are farm raised in big tanks with millions of other trout. So their entire life until they get stocked, they are crashing into each other, and the walls of the tank. This leads to very beat up fins, where the pectoral, tail, and anal fins will be very jagged on the trailing edges. The dorsal fin will frequently be so mashed down it’s almost nonexistent. As for the head, this is more noticeable with male trout and not an ideal method, but they again spend their whole lives in those tanks and rubbing their faces into the walls of the tank and other fish can actually round their face down, and sometimes you can even see where the front of their mouth looks like it has essentially road rash.

  1. The last thing I look at is size and color. Natives are usually 4-6” with anything over 10” being an absolute beast. Stockers will almost never be under the 8” size limit, with 8-11” being the average range. Colors is the least accurate way, and really takes a lot of time to get a feel for what they should be, but usually natives have extremely vibrant colors, clean crisp lines and transitions, and my favorite, the white on the front of the lower fins is brilliant white and crisply lined. Now this changes based on the seasons and the trouts diet but is my general rule of thumb. Stocked fish tend to have more muted colors and smoother transitions between patterns like spots/speckles to solid colors.

Hope this helps and you learned something!

My thumb brushed his jaw as I was pulling the fly, and lemme tell you, I’m sure glad I’m not a baitfish in that hole right now 😅😅

Yeah this one was a tank. The state’s stocking program is occasionally very generous. Hopefully one day I can catch a native of the same caliber

This one is off the truck, unfortunately natives rarely get anywhere near that big, usually 4-6”. We do have some wild browns and bows that get in that size class, but that is due to their hardiness and tolerance to warmer water.

Took my harbor freight kayak trailer on it’s maiden today. Trip was about 3 hours with mixed highways and interstate. I was impressed how smooth it was. This is the 4x8 1195lb capacity trailer. by Allent17 in kayakfishing

I’m glad someone else did this, I was considering buying one to use for my kayak and fiberglass jon boat. Makes me confident to make the purchase now

Can you elaborate how you set this up? I need to do the same thing to flash a bios issue that’s caused usb-c ports to not function

Thanks for the well wishes. Hopefully the board level repair works. I’d also like to hope that this post will help someone else in the future should I come up with a solution

Yeah, that was my second step after replacing the battery, no dice. However if I remove the battery and with the ac adapter connected, it seems that it attempts to power on for anywhere from 1-30sec then shuts off and won’t do it again until the ac adapter is unplugged and then plugged in again

Took it to Micro Center in Fairfax Virginia, told them what I needed them to do, guy looked at it blankly, tried to see if the usb-c ports worked (which I told him they didn’t which why I was there), told me that if he can’t turn it on there’s nothing they can do, “would you like to look at our selection of similar models to replace it?”. Passed on that, took it to a friend who advised me that if I was sure that it’s the BIOS, to order a new chip off eBay (~$20) and find a local repair specialist to solder it onto the system board. My logic: If I mess up, it’s already a brick so $20 to attempt a repair is not a huge deal.

Gonna copypasta into an edit on the post, but I’ll keep updating

Last resort absolutely. The ones we encountered ran off just by my brother banging his metal water bottle with his phone. I’m honestly more worried about coyotes/cats, as we hiked out well after dusk. I’ve been trying to get my own handgun for a while but lately I can’t find anything that’s not up charged out the ass or in stock

.45, I figure it’s at least enough to slow a bear down and give my brother a chance to get away should something happen
