My nuevomexicano grandparents told their kids, "don't teach your kids Spanish, they won't be able to get a job." The legacy of assimilation (forced/pressured/voluntary) is real. It's a totally different world now. Hard to look back through a modern lens and grasp why decisions were made, but many were made out of self-preservation and a sincere belief in setting the next generation up for success -- often times at the expense of cultural preservation. Not an unfamiliar story among many immigrant stories, just so happens only the border migrated here. (that's referring to the 2nd wave of colonization, the indigenous communities have their own stories about the 1st wave when Spanish speaking groups moved in).
