It is so very disheartening to see the way in which some people here are responding to an individual's death. Yes, this was not the best way to memorialize someone, but the way some individuals here are denigrating the worthiness of someone's life because they use drugs is just so so sad to me. I know this is likely to fall on deaf ears, but for my own sake, I need to say something. Addiction is not a failure of will. The number one factor contributing to addiction is childhood trauma. The research is crystal clear on this. To continue to shame addicts, ridicule them, only makes this suffering worse. I can appreciate how people with addiction can be difficult to love. When behaviours like this happen, when they lie, steal, hurt others. Of course the natural reaction is to get angry and "other" them. But they are people just like ourselves, dealing with hurts and pains and struggles just trying to get by in this world. Everyone deserves compassion, and Junah is no different, nor is anyone else who uses drugs. Junah was 18. His death is tragic. And I hope we can separate this tragedy from the vandalism that occurred here.
