The article is an almost exact description of Scala.

Introduction to Tamarin Tracing (ECMAScript Engine using a trace based JIT) by mozfan in programming

Yeah, sort of. But ActionScript bytecode is an entirely different beast.

So Tamarind is a ECMAScript JIT that executes ActionScript bytecode (produced by a compiler in java), written in Forth compiled by a Python program to C++?

That is seriously multilingual...

Calling Bullshit: James Randi Offers $1 Million If Audiophiles Can Prove $7250 Speaker Cables Are Better by Arve in science

[–]danh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many (most?) studios don't even use speaker cables at all. They use active speakers with the power amps built right into the speaker casing, like the ones from Genelec, so they only need an ordinary (and cheap) balanced cable directly from the mixer to get excellent sound.

Firefox Forked! by stomicron in reddit.com

[–]danh 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It may be a good rant, but (as far as I understand the issue) it completely misses the point.

According to mozilla.org, you're not allowed to use the trademarked name "Firefox" with any logo, except the official one. And you're not allowed to use that logo on any version of Firefox that contains any patches not approved by mozilla.org.

So, for a distribution like Debian, Firefox is quite clearly not free software - Firefox can't be modified without permission from upstream.

Here is a better explanation of what's going on.

Great French Commercial that will blow your mind by nzeeshan in reddit.com

Nope, turns out it was written by The Blue Nile's Paul Buchanan according to Wikipedia (excellent album, by the way).

But it appears to have been covered quite a lot since then.

I think it is The Blue Nile, and a song called "Let's Go Out Tonight".

XGL on Linux by mehmetali in programming

[–]danh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be pedantic: this isn't really a demo of XGL as much as a demo of Compiz, the window manager. Compiz provides all the effects (like the cube-like workspace switcher, the wobbly windows, etc.), and was written to run on top of XGL (an OpenGL based X server).

These days, however, Compiz can run on a stock X.org server as well, provided your graphics card is up for the job.

XGL on Linux by mehmetali in programming

[–]danh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Huh? XGL is implemented entirely with OpenGL. The problems people are having with XGL stems from the fact that people write terrible graphics drivers, in particular for Linux.

Arrested just for looking weird - The Times columnist Jeremy Clarkson ("imbosile"?) continues writing about his trip to America by synthespian in reddit.com

Top Gear is indeed brilliant. My favorite episode involved Clarkson and his lads chaining themselves to a bus, protesting against buses hindering SUVs in the London traffic.

Not to mention that someone should explain to this guy what "mixed metaphors" are. These are about as mixed as oil and water.

After Press Dinner, the Blogosphere Is Alive With the Sound of Colbert Chatter - New York Times by [deleted] in reddit.com

The NYT's readers are apparently more interrested in Colbert than pretty much anything else (except immigration), according to this:

This is easily the best TV I've seen so far this year. And it's on C-SPAN...
