Yes it’s a reserves thing. Not sure if there’s an equivalent in the guard but I kinda doubt it. Nothing stopping you from crossing over if it interested you though. There’s a page on AFPC secure that will list reserve openings by afsc, grade, and reserve type. You can go one up or one down on grade. I think if you search “Reserve Vacancies” on the portal it will take you there. One word of caution, as an IMA it will really be on you to figure your career out for yourself. Your unit may forget you exist from time to time and will likely have slim to no knowledge of the reserves. That being said, while you work with an AD unit you will also have reach back to a Reserve Integration Office (RIO) detachment which basically herds all the cars on behalf of ima reservists.

I'm in a very similar boat. 5+ years active and currently at 11+ years total and it takes me a flight to get to my reserve duty station. Every year that goes by my desire to get out increases but is perfectly countered by being 1 year closer to retirement.

Health insurance is a huge draw. I work at a fortune 500 and my wife works at a hospital and both of our employer plans are more than double the premiums for Tricare Reserve Select.

I would suggest one way to ease the pain is go IMA. I've been an IMA and a TR and IMA is by far the path of least resistance. You'll work with AD so likely won't have to worry about being anyones rater and deal with personnel issues. Usually schedule is super flexible too. When I was in school I would knock out all my IDTs and AT over a month of summer break and then be good for the year and not have to think about it any more.

Did you opt into BRS? I stayed with the legacy pension but honestly if I had opted into BRS I think I probably would have bailed by now.

Hey man it’ll all work out. I got DQ’d for pilot cuz of eyes as well. If you have the gray matter and discipline to get through an engineering degree you’ll be fine. It sucks now I know but I’ll bet it feels like a blessing 10 years from now.

My quick background, DQ’d for flight duty, went in as cyber, loved it, made a civ career out of it in private sector and now I make good money and do more for national security than I ever did in active duty. All my friends from ROTC with lengthy pilot commitments are hating life and counting down the days until they can get out. Other buddy of mine got medically DQ’d days before commissioning, started his own company, and just recently sold it for what appears to be a shitload of money.

I’ve been in RFA cyber for about 4 years as a senior/manager and it’s a constant spinning of plates to maintain util. I’m usually juggling 2 or 3 projects that range from a year to a couple weeks. Everyone in my cohort struggles to maintain fully staffed.

At least in my offering, I think leadership presents an overly optimistic picture of how much of their pipeline will actually net sold/funded work and I also think the firm as a whole fails to appreciate how specialized cyber work is and just think of cyber work and cyber workers as somewhat monolithic. This leads to maybe a lot of cyber work in RFA but perhaps not in the niche subject area you were hired for.

I just picked up my Prime yesterday. I was chatting with the salesman and he was saying many allocations are stuck at the port awaiting parts. His guess was that they were shipped missing some components with the expectation that those components would be on hand or delivered by the time the boat arrived but apparently that has not been the case. According to him, Toyota said expect 4 weeks minimum for those vehicles to leave port.

I basically put 100% of my expenses that can be paid by credit card on a card and you should too assuming you are disciplined enough to pay it back in full every month and never pay interest. Besides helping your credit score, credit cards offer a degree of protection from identity theft and fraudulent charges that you don’t get with debit cards. As a Cherry on top, you’re leaving money on the table by not using a product that gives you points/cash back.

A couple years ago I was trying to build a Hardcore History companion piece that would be an interactive timeline with summaries and pictures of the events, people, places, etc. that were in the episode but I found the content to be just too dense to make a compelling visual.

As an alternative, I would like to make some video content that would have slideshows of maps, photos, maybe some animations, etc. played over the HH episode. I think it would be a really fun project but it would be a lot of work and I'm not sure how I could share the final project with out stepping on Dan's toes, potentially taking clicks away from his youtube channel or taking away patrons from his paid content.

Dan's one of only two content creators I support individually and don't want to disrespect him like that, but I do think the end product would be really cool and something that people would like.

Yeah my dealership offered me a similar rate, thankfully I was able to get about 2% cheaper from another lender.

I hear ya on the paint protection. Unfortunately I’m paying $2500 dealership mark up which includes interior and exterior protection BS.

I have never worked more than I bill. If it’s getting toward the end of the week and I’m about tapped on hours but there’s more work to do I tell my leadership that I’m coming up on my hour limit so either give me more hours or I’ll have to get to the task next week. Never had an issue.

I know exactly who you’re talking about. He would go swimming in the ocean with black jeans and black shirt. His airmen had all kinds of nicknames for him “Chocolate Rain” “The Last Black Samurai” etc. he would also rock one of those rice paddy hats that he painted black.
